From the Desk of Pastor Jim…
Legalism in the Church Legalism is a dangerous thing in the Church. It diminishes the grace of God,
destroys the natural joy that comes from serving others in ministry like nothing
else I’ve seen. What is legalism? Legalism happens when we substitute our rules
and rituals for our relationship with Christ. It’s a subtle trap that takes the focus
off of what God has done for you and slowly turns it to what you have done for
God.
In Philippians 3, Paul tells us flat out that he’s tried legalism. In the process, he
points out five different ways he had been a legalist – ways that still haunt many
of us today.
Legalism is putting your trust in rituals. Paul says, “I was circumcised
eight days after I was born according to the Jewish law.” (Phil. 3:5a) Today, a
Christian might say, “I was baptized,” or “I joined the church,” or “I took
communion.” All of those are good, but they don’t earn God’s approval.
Legalism is putting your trust in man. Paul says, “Of the people of Israel, I
was of the tribe of Benjamin.” (Phil. 3:5b) I’ve got the royal pedigree here. It’s
like people today who say they have a relationship with God because their uncle
was a missionary or their mom was a believer. It doesn’t work that way. Everyone
has to make his or her own decision to follow Jesus. God has children, not
grandchildren!
Legalism is putting your trust in a religion. Paul says, “I’m a Hebrew of
Hebrews.” (Phil. 3:5c) Some Christians today say the same thing. They point to
their denomination when asked about their relationship with God. When we get
to heaven, God won’t ask us what denomination we are – He will ask us did we
trust in Jesus Christ, crucified and risen!
Legalism is putting your trust in rules. Paul also says, “In regard to the law,
I was a Pharisee.” (Phil. 3:6a) The Pharisees were the spiritually elite. They
turned the Ten Commandments into 813! Ten just wasn’t enough for them. They
would not eat any food made on the Sabbath because someone had to “work”
by making it. They would not rescue a trapped animal on the Sabbath because
that was considered work. By bringing attention to his background as a Pharisee,
Paul is saying, “You want to talk about rules? I kept the rules!”
Legalism is putting your trust in your ability. Finally, Paul adds, “As for
zeal, and as for legalistic righteousness, I was faultless.” (Phil. 3:6b) In other
words, Paul was saying he was a superstar legalist! Today we might brag on how
many people attend our church, how long we pray, or how many people we led to
Christ last week. The end result is the same – these things won’t make God any
happier with us.

Church Council Communication Corner Church Council meets the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 PM in the
small kitchen with an agenda-setting meeting on the first Tuesday of the
month, also at 6:30 in the small kitchen. The Council encourages any member
of the congregation who would like to bring something before the Council to
contact any council member or attend the agenda-setting and Council
meetings for the month.
Highlights from the March Council Meeting:
From the Desk of Pastor Jim, Continued The problem Paul addresses comes when we think these things give us points
with God—they don’t. He loves us unconditionally. If you start trusting in these
things, you’re going to lose your joy.
The Christian faith is based on faith in the grace of God! Paul
celebrated the grace of God over legalism, writing: “I once thought these
things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what
Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the
infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” (Phil 3:7-8)
The antidote to legalism is grace. Grace means we don’t have to earn God’s
love, and we don’t have to earn His approval. Is it because I deserve it? Not a
chance. Is it because I keep certain rules and regulations? Not a chance. It’s
because I’m covered with the blood of Jesus Christ.
God loves you, but it’s not because of what you do. He approves of you
because of what Christ did for you already. That’s grace. The Christian life is
not a ritual and it’s not about rules—it’s a relationship. Religion is based upon
performance, but Christianity is based on a person, Jesus Christ.

News from Cristo Rey Lutheran Church of Pharr Submitted by Harold Bogisch
Pastor Alma Morales will leave Cristo Rey to accept a call from the
Southwest Texas Synod of the ELCA to serve as a mission representative in
the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. As a result, Cristo Rey will hire a part-time
pastor. This arrangement will greatly assist their financial situation, and they
will no longer need the financial assistance Faith has been providing. Pastor
Alma will conduct Sunday services at Cristo until they find a new pastor. They
also plan to leave the ELCA and join the LCMC. Faith has had a long
relationship with Cristo Rey, and it is hoped that we will continue to have a
relationship and exchange visits. Daniel Chavez, Cristo Rey President, came
to Seguin recently to pick up a full trailer load of donations from Faith. It Is
important that Faith continue to collect these gifts once or twice a year. These
gifts are distributed to the poor in Pharr and Donna. Please continue to pray
for our brothers and sisters in Cristo Rey.

Fools for
Christ The number one reason why Christians do not share their faith is fear. More than any other reason that we give for not telling others about Jesus is fear of rejection, fear of messing up, fear of being asked questions we don't know the answer to, etc. In short, we can say that we are afraid of making fools of ourselves! This month we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on April Fools' Day for the first time in 62 years! While much has been written and said about Jesus making a fool of sin, death, and the devil in his rising from the dead, I wanted to take a few moments and reflect on our foolishness instead. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 1 that "the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." In other words, we shouldn't be surprised that some who hear the Good News about Jesus will see it as foolishness. And this also should not deter us from sharing the Gospel, but simply prepare us for how we may be received. Paul goes on to write that "God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe." Paul's words should give us courage to face our fears and not worry about whether we look foolish in the eyes of those we reach out to. We may be rejected, but we shake off the dust. We may be ridiculed, but we know that we are counted as blessed. We may be asked tough questions, but we answer honestly: "I don't know - let's see if we can figure that out together." We may even feel like we mess up, but we know that God is with us, the Holy Spirit is empowering us, and that God promises that his word will always accomplish its purpose. So be bold and brave and share the love of God with someone God has put in your life to enjoy and befriend. For we are reminded that being a fool for Christ is a good thing and its not foolishness at all. For if we are never willing to risk some embarrassment for Jesus' sake, we will never receive the reward of the joy of salvation coming to the one who hears and believes. Jesus looked like a fool for dying on the cross. What kind of King does that? The kind that loves us so much that he was faithful even to death to accomplish his Father's plan of salvation, so that death can be conquered and the joke be on the devil! And it would be foolish of us to NOT share this Good News!

Preschool News Submitted by Preschool Director Sharon Stollewerk
Another busy month for Faith Lutheran Preschoolers! March came and went in
the blink of an eye and happily brought the spring season!
The Two Year Olds MMO Class has been hard at work learning the letters K and
E, which related to students' names Kynndra, Kyle, Easton, and Ethan. They
planted seeds for their unit on spring and anxiously awaited the sprouting of the
plants. This was definitely a test of patience for the children and teachers! They
enjoyed watching their white carnations turn colors as the flowers drank the
colored water. Bible stories included Jesus' parade on Palm Sunday and our
Easter surprise. Yellow Day was celebrated with yellow snacks (banana pudding)
and everyone wearing yellow clothing. The Easter Egg Hunt was a huge success
with the Easter Bunny's visit.
The Three Day Class is having a fabulous time with Sound Table. Letters this
month were Tt, Rr, and Dd. They have been working hard on their cutting skills
and cut out a big triangle. They made rockets with handprint flames and made a
cute doghouse out of the letter D.
The Five Day Classes began the month with the letter Rr and had fun making
rectangle robots, red rockets, and reading their new readers. Dd week brought
ducks, designs, dress-up, and LOTS of dinosaurs. Chapel stories have been
Through the Roof, Daniel in the Lion's Den, and The Easter Story. The children
celebrated Easter week by making beautiful Resurrection eggs. Each egg
contained symbols so that each child could tell the entire Easter story. The
Easter Egg Hunt was over in a FLASH, as both classes enjoyed hunting eggs and
visiting with the Easter Bunny. Thank you, Candi Andrews, for being our adorable
bunny!
The children had a wonderful time celebrating their Dads at Doughnuts with
Dads. We appreciate you and the important part you play in you child's life!
Donuts
with Dads
is always a
big hit with
everyone!
The first Faith Lutheran Preschool
Fundraiser was a HUGE success! Thank you to everyone who participated;
either by entering the Chili Cook-Off, donating to
the Silent Auction, purchasing the Pluck-a-Bucks,
bringing food, or making a monetary
donation. Once again, this
congregation rose to the occasion
and showed their never-ending
generosity. With a total of $12,000.00 being raised, the
new full-time class for two year olds
can become a reality in the fall! Thank you again
for your continued support and love, and please know
that it is so greatly appreciated.
