The females of kansensis and trinotatus and markedly alike, but the malesare entirely different. Dr. Adams suggested in a letter the possibility of a specieswith dimorphic males, but a close study reveals characters by which the femalescan be recognized, which indicates that there are two distinct species. Thedifferences in the extent of the color markings of the abdomen and legs arenot of value in separating these species. The characteristic differences betweenthe two species may be stated thus"
Nemotelus kansensis Adams.
Female" 5.5 mm. Rostellum projecting beyond the eye more than thehorizontal diameter of the eye: proboscis geniculate a little before the middle.
Nemotelus trinotatus Melander.
Female. Length 4.5 mm. Rostellum projecting not more than the diameterof the eye" proboscis geniculate at the middle.
The male of kansensis is at once distinguished from all the other species bythe single conspicuous black fiscia on the fifth abdominal segment. SlossonaeJohnson and yCavicornis Johnson, the only other species with a black fascia soplaced, are of small size and have the fourth segment also blackened. Moreoverin these species the third vein is simple.
A DIPTEROUS PARASITE OF THE BOX TURTLE.--In PSYCHE, Vol. , page 403,Dr. Wm. M. Wheeler mentions several cases of finding larvae of dipterous flies ofthe genus Sarca2#haga in tumors in the skin of the Box Turtle. On July 28, i9o2I found another case of the same kind at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, N. Y.,near the biological laboratory. The turtle had a swelling about an inch in diameteron the left side of the neck with a small opening directed forward that was usuallynearly closed but could be easily stretched to quarter of an inch in diameter.Five larvae were taken out through this opening with forceps, one dead and partlydecayed, the others alive and full grown. Placed in bottles with moist earth theyburied themselves within a few hours. On July 31 one of them had pupated andthe fly came out August 7. It is plainly a Sarco_phoga but has not yet been exam-ined by anyone familiar enough with this genus to determine the species. The flyand one of the larvae are in the Museum of Comparative Zo61ogy in Cambridge,Mass.--J’. At. Emerton.
