Gelbart, Chair First I want to thank the large num- ber of you who were generous enough to respond to our recent appeals for con- tributions to help offset the severe bud- get cuts that have been levied on us (along with all other departments in the College here at UCLA). This past year has been particularly hard, as we re- bounded from our first round of cuts only to face additional and larger ones for the current and upcoming years. But the good news is that our faculty and staff continue to rise to the occasion and to excel on all fronts. In addition to the prestigious awards won by Fred Hawthorne, Ken Houk, and Wayne Hubbell that are described on the next page, we have just learned that Fraser Stoddart is the winner of the 2004 Nagoya Medal of Organic Chemistry, to be conferred on him in Japan at next summer’s 15 th International Congress of Organic Synthesis. And faculty throughout the Department continue to contribute substantively to new research and outreach initiatives within the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) and the Materials Creation Training Program (MCTP) described for the first time in the last Newsletter. A special forum – the “Cram Debate” – was initiated on September 22 as Jim Heath and Ed Chandross argued the cases for and against a future for mo- lecular computers before an audience of hundreds. A heartwarming surge of contributions to the Daniel Kivelson Undergraduate Fellowship Fund will make it possible for the first student to benefit from this support as early as next quarter. And the 2 nd Kivelson Lecture will be given on December 1 by Gilles Tarjus, Dan’s most recent and long-time collaborator. Finally, plans are well in place for an exciting Seaborg Symposium on December 6 (see pages 10 and 12) to help commemorate the installation of our new 800 Mhz NMR facility and to honor Seaborg Medal- ists Ad Bax of the NIH and Alex Pines of Berkeley for their pioneering con- tributions to NMR. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at this and other departmental occasions in the near future. Very best wishes,

NEWS ITEM #1Faculty Awards

New FacultyTom Mason

M. Frederick Hawthorneis the 2003 Winner of theMonie A. Ferst Award.This award, administeredby the Georgia Institute ofTechnology Chapter of the

Sigma Xi Society, recognizes those who havemade notable contributions to motivationand encouragement of research througheducation. The award is made every year toa person who has touched and inspired hisor her research colleagues in a manner thatcan be documented by their subsequentscientific accomplishments. The award wasnamed after the late Monie A. Ferst, anoutstanding engineer and businessman, whoin 1933 co-founded the Georgia TechResearch Institute out of personal funds. Believing strongly in the idea that basicresearch conducted by science faculty wouldsignificantly enhance the effectiveness oftheir teaching, he endowed the $5,000 FerstMedal to honor those who have madenotable contributions to the training ofscientists in the academic arena.

Kendall N. Houk is oneof three Americanscientists to be elected thisyear to the InternationalAcademy of QuantumMolecular Science. The

Academy was founded in 1967 in Menton,France, to honor scientists of all countries“who have distinguished themselves by thevalue of their scientific work and their roleas pioneer or leader of a school in the broadfield of the application of quantum mechanicsto the study of molecules andmacromolecules.” Membership involvingscientists under the age of 65 is limited to 35worldwide, and includes photochemists andmolecular scattering theorists as well asquantum chemists.

Wayne L. Hubbellreceived the ZavoiskyAward of the RussianAcademy of Sciences,established in 1991 tohonor the contrib-utions of E. K.

Zavoisky to the discovery of EPR overfifty years ago. The award waspresented at a public ceremony on the19th of September, in Kazan, Russia,attended by officials of TararstanRepublic, Kazan City, and Kazan StateUniversity. The ceremony was thecapstone of a two-day workshop onModern Developments in MagneticResonance, and included receptions,banquets, and performances by a fullstring orchestra, all in honor of Wayneand his work.

Dr. Thomas G. Mason has recentlyjoined the chemistry and biochemistryfaculty as an assistant professor in July,2003. He holds the John McTagueCareer Development Chair and has ajoint appointment in the department ofphysics and astronomy. Prior tocoming to UCLA, Tom worked as anindustrial scientist in the field ofcomplex fluids for nearly six years atExxonMobil Research and EngineeringCo. in Annandale, New Jersey. There,he developed polarized laser tweezersthat can be used to trap and rotatebirefringent microscopic particlessuspended in a liquid, and, using

tigated the structure and interactionsof heavy polyaromatic moleculesknown as asphaltenes that poseproblems in refining crude oils. Hispostdoctoral experience includes inter-disciplinary research in chemicalengineering at the Johns HopkinsUniversity, where he studied themechanical properties of biopolymersolutions, and in physical chemistry atthe Paul Pascal Research Center inBordeaux, France, where he studiedemulsification. Tom’s primary research interests liein developing a fundamental under-standing of the structure and mechani-cal flow properties, or “rheology”, ofsoft materials including denseparticulate suspensions, highly concen-trated emulsions, and entangledpolymer solutions. The shapes of andinteractions between the microscale andnanoscale structures of the constituentparticles, droplets, and polymers canprofoundly influence the macroscopicphase behavior and rheology of thesesuspensions. His research group atUCLA will be exploring the followingareas: (1) designing and studying thephase behavior of new kinds of colloi-dal particles using optical and e-beamlithographic methods, (2) creatingnanoemulsions of liquid droplets thathave zeptoliter volumes in anotherimmiscible liquid for applications incoatings and drug delivery, (3) measur-ing the mechanical flow properties ofvery small volumes, or microrheology,of biopolymer solutions using particletracking, laser tweezers, and lightscattering, and (4) performing neutronscattering experiments at nationalbeamline facilities in order to measurethe structures of hydrocarbons in bulksuspensions. Tom’s laboratory space has just beencompletely renovated, and his group isin the process of setting up emulsifica-tion, rheology, light scattering, lasertweezers, and lithography experiments.

Fred T. Weiss, BS’38 (Young), PhD’41(Harvard), is still active in the Judah L.Magnus Museum of Jewish Studies inBerkeley, which recently purchased anew building and will rebuild it withmore extensive galleries. He writes thatit takes “a different sort of chemistry toget many people involved.”

Arthur Furst, MA’40 (Stone), PhD’48(Stanford), is still active at age 88. Herecently published two papers in theInternational Journal of Toxicology andFood and Chemical Toxicology. His book“151 Myths in Everyday Science“ hasjust been published.

Stanley Singer, BS’46, PhD’50(Jacobs), is director of research atAthenex Research in Pasadena.

Ross I. Wagner, BS’47, PhD’54 (USC)is, since July 2000, a research associatein the Loker Hydrocarbon ResearchInstitute at USC.

Ursula (Solnitz) Osborne, BS’48,writes that her BS allowed her to workas a lab assistant in university labs atBerkeley, Wisconsin, Indiana, andHeidelberg, Germany. Despite heradvisor’s attempt to discourage herfrom majoring in chemistry (“Womenchoose to study chemistry merely tofind a chemist husband.”), she believesthat her motive “was a deep yearningto learn of the beauty and intricacies ofnature at a molecular level”. She didfind a chemist husband, Clyde E.Osborne, BS’48, and their marriagelasted 46 years until his death in 1994.Her career included teaching highschool chemistry in California from 1965to 1969, and two years (1996-98) as aPeace Corps volunteer in the highlandsof Papua New Guinea. She writes thather twelfth-grade students there wereextremely self-motivated, and that “Ibelieve that the rigor in setting up ex-pressions for calculations using units ofmeasure, balancing oxidation-reduc-tion equations, and reasonable attentionto significant figures, as I learned atUCLA, was helpful to these third-worldstudents”.

S. Kathleen Tendick, BS’50, MS’52(Crowell), retired from Los AngelesHarbor College in June 2002. She writesthat she “missed last year’s SeaborgDinner because we were in southeastAsia, returning to Nepal from Thai-land”, but expects to attend the dinnerin December.

Robert V. St. Louis, BS’54, PhD’63(Minnesota), is emeritus professor ofchemistry at the University of Wiscon-sin – Eau Claire, having served therefrom 1968 to 1998. He has been activein the Central Wisconsin Section of theACS, serving as newsletter editor, chair,and National Chemistry Weekorganizer.

Noriko (Chiwaki) Clement, MS’55(James), widow of Robert A. Clement,PhD’54 (Young), is doing Japanesetranslation and interpretation, as abusiness entity, Clemenor, LLC.

Cornelius Steelink, PhD’56(Geissman), emeritus professor ofchemistry at the University of Arizona,is president-elect of the SouthernArizona Section of the ACS, presidentof the University of Arizona RetireesAssociation, and president of theSouthern Arizona Chapter of theArizona Civil Liberties Union. Hewrites that “All of this keeps me busyand in constant trouble.”

Carleton D. Bingham, PhD’59(James), has been retired since 1995 fromthe AED/ERDA/DOE New BrunswickLaboratory, of which he was directorfrom 1971 to 1995.

James A. Pegolotti, PhD’59 (Young),is retired from being librarian at WestConnecticut State University inDanbury. He is author of “DeemsTaylor: A Biography” to be publishedin the fall of 2003 by Northeastern Uni-versity Press.

Matthew L. Howard, BS’60, MD’64,JD’93 (UC Berkeley), practices medicinepart-time as a staff physician in thedepartment of head and neck surgeryat Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in

Santa Rosa. He also maintains a lawpractice in Ukiah and Santa Rosaspecializing in Social SecurityDisability law. He writes: “Followinggraduation and in medical school, Iworked as a bench chemist for facultyon research projects, but have donenothing similar since finishing medicalschool. Indeed my next-to-last such jobwas as a student technician in WillardLibby’s lab until he fired me for goingto medical school instead of graduateschool.”

Bruce Rickborn, PhD’60 (Cram), isemeritus professor of chemistry at UCSanta Barbara, having retired in 2001.

Edwin C. Friedrich, PhD’61(Winstein) is emeritus professor ofchemistry at UC Davis.

Eugene N. Garcia, PhD’61 (McKee),is emeritus professor of chemistry atCSU Dominguez Hills.

David E. Whittington, BS’63, JD’66(Hastings), practiced law from 1966 to1996, but now is on inactive status. Hislast position was county counsel of ElDorado County, California. He writesthat “Since 1971 I have also owned andoperated a small farm where I now growwine grapes.” He also serves on theboard of directors of the GeorgetownDivide Public Utilities District.

C. Dale Poulter, postdoc ’68(Winstein), professor at the Universityof Utah, has been named winner of theJames Flack Norris Award in PhysicalOrganic Chemistry sponsored by theACS Northeastern Section. He willreceive the award at the March 2004meeting of the ACS. Michael H. Sekera, BS’69, MS’82(CalTech) writes that “I have recentlyreturned to Southern California afterhaving spent the last six years in Kona,Hawaii, and the 2 years prior in the SanFrancisco Bay area. In the winter of2002, I had the very satisfying opportu-nity of being part of the drug-testingprogram at the Salt Lake Olympics. Ihave now rejoined the UCLA OlympicAnalytical Laboratory on a full-timebasis as Scientific Director. This labora-tory is the only one in the U.S. accred-ited by the International Olympic Com-mittee to perform testing of athletes forperformance-enhancing drugs such asanabolic steroids.”

At the Chemistry and Biochemistry Ceremony on June 14, the sun shone brightly on the 170 Bachelor’s of Science and 30PhD graduates in black robes. Faculty, staff, and approximately 1,700 guests watched with delight as the Departmentrecognized the students’ completion of their degrees. Due to the generous donations of alumni and friends of the Department,72 honors and $28,000 in monetary awards and fellowships were also presented to designated students. The afternoonended with caps flying, graduates hugging, and smiles from everyone celebrating the success of the Class of 2003.

Alex Pines

Adriaan (Ad) Bax was born in 1956, in The Netherlands and became a US citizenin 1999. He received his Ph.D. in 1981 from the Delft University of Technology,The Netherlands, for work related to the development of two-dimensional nuclearmagnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, which he carried out at Delft and OxfordUniversities. His Ph.D. thesis was reprinted in book format and for many yearsserved as a popular text, introducing students to the application of two-dimen-sional NMR in chemistry. After post-doctoral work in solid-state NMR, Bax joinedNIH where he has been working on the development and application of a widevariety of advanced multi-dimensional NMR techniques. Initially, this work fo-cused on the study of natural products and other small molecules, but in thelatter half of the eighties he shifted his interests to the study of the three-dimen-sional structure and dynamic properties of proteins.

Bax’s work has been recognized by numerous awards, including the MarylandOutstanding Young Scientist Award from the Maryland Academy of Sciences, theGold Medal from the Dutch Chemical Society, the Bijvoet Medal from UtrechtUniversity, the Protein Society Young Investigator Award, the E. Bright Wilson,Hillebrand, and Remsen Awards from the American Chemical Society, theKirkwood Medal from Yale University, the Gunther Laukien Award from the Ex-perimental NMR Conference, the John Scott Award from the City of Philadel-phia, the Jeanette Piperno Award from Temple University, and the Hans NeurathAward from the Protein Society. He is also a corresponding member of the DutchRoyal Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sci-ences, and a Member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Alexander Pines is the Glenn T. Seaborg Professor of Chemistry at the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley, and Principal Investigator in the Materials Sciences Division ofthe Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In 1972, he obtained his Ph.D. in ChemicalPhysics at MIT and joined the faculty at Berkeley. Pines was awarded the Wolf Prizefor chemistry in 1991. Among his numerous other honors, he has received the LangmuirAward of the American Chemical Society and the Faraday Medal of the Royal Societyof Chemistry. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and a ForeignMember of the Royal Society (London); he is Doctor Honoris Causa at the Universityof Paris and the University of Rome, and past President of the International Society ofMagnetic Resonance. A renowned educator, Pines has been recognized by receivingthe University of California Distinguished Teaching Award; and has been mentor togenerations of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows worldwide, the self-dubbed“Pinenuts”.

Pines is a pioneer in the development of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)spectroscopy, particularly for solids. His innovations include contributions to multiple-pulse coherent averaging, time-reversal of dipolar couplings, cross-polarizations, multiple quantum coherence, multidimensional spectroscopy, andzero-field NMR. Applications of his widely used techniques range from catalyst and polymers to liquid crystals andbiomolecules. Recently, Pines has introduced a novel approach to high-resolution “ex-situ” spectroscopy and imaging; hehas also further enhanced NMR and its offspring, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), using laser-polarized noble gases andsuperconducting (SQUID) detectors, with applications extending from chemistry and physics to materials science andbiomedicine.
