General DescriptionHarmer Kessel drains incorporate all ofthe design advantages associated withthe Harmer Floor ranges of floor gulliesplus the economies of plastics in usewith stainless steel. Gullies are of highquality manufacture offering excellentvalue engineering.
Harmer Kessel drains are available forconnections in DN50 and DN100 pipe sizesfor a variety of drainage applicationswith a choice of stainless steel orplastic grating tops. All gullies aredesigned for ease of maintenance withremovable top access foul odour trap.
Harmer Kessel drains are designed sothat parts becoming lost or worn canbe quickly and easily replaced.
The comprehensive Harmer Kesselrange covers:
Backflow stops — both for soil andwaste, and for waste water only. Withfully automatic single and double selfclosing flaps, manual closure possiblein emergency. Retrofitting and conver-sion are possible after installation.
External drains — range includes yarddrains and rainwater drains for removalof surface water in outdoor areas.Removable odour traps are a featurethat facilitates pipe cleaning. Yarddrain features include the capability toaccommodate settlement afterinstallation, height adjustability and
grates that are adjustable to pavingpatterns. Both yard and rainwaterdrains incorporate adjustable side inletcomponents.
Heavy duty internal drains — rangeincludes cellar and floor drains withremovable odour trap and sludge basket, and two cellar drain variations withbackflow stop, and backflow stop withpump. Fully adjustable and variableinstallation depth are possible as above.
‘Economy’ drains — for internalapplication. In ground and intermediatefloors, in bathrooms and washdownareas. Products incorporate selfcleansing odour traps and offer fulladjustability for height, level androtational alignment.
Applicable StandardsHarmer Kessel products comply withthe following standards, whereappropriate:
DIN 1986 Part 1: Water Drainage systems generally forbuildings and sites.
DIN 19599: Drains and Covers in Buildings.
DIN 18195: Waterproofing of buildings and structures.
DIN 1997 and DIN 19578: Backflow stops.
DIN 4043: Volatile liquid traps.

General Information on Plastics
Plastics enable a material specification closelymatched to utilisation requirements to beselected. In addition to the plastics PVC, PP andABS which are commonly used for drains, othertechnical plastics such as PA, PPO, PEEK etc,may also be used where appropriate. A furtheradvantage of the plastics used is that they canbe fully recycled even after many years ofservice.
Protection Against Backflow
Site Drainage Systems
Drains located below backflow level must beprotected against backflow. The backflow levelis specified by the local authorities (accordingto local criteria). If no specifications areavailable, the height of the road surface at the connecting point applies.
A distinction is made between sewage whichdoes not contain faeces and sewage whichcontains faeces (including sewage from WCs and urinals).
Sewage which occurs below the backflow leveland the public mains must be disposed of bymeans of a siphon.
Sewage which occurs below the backflow levelbut can be fed into the public mains via anatural gradient should be transferred via asiphon or via backflow stops. In rooms in zoneswhich are not frequently used:
a) Sewage containing faeces can be led off viabackflow stops or,
b) Sewage not containing faeces or componentsfrom urinals or WCs can be led off viabackflow stops if the drain points do not needto be used in the event of backflow.
Backflow stops can be used if: ■ No permanent water drainage is necessary.
■ Only a limited number of people use thesystem (eg, as in family houses) and a WC is available above the backflow level.
■ It does not need to serve any considerablerain catchment area and flooding of low-lying rooms by water draining off smallsurfaces, for example cellar floors, garageentrances etc, is prevented by suitablemeans (eg, sills etc).
Water occurring above the backflow level flowsoff according to the principle of communicatingpipes in the event of backflow. However, if abackflow stop has been incorrectly installed andsewage from the building is thus led off abovethe backflow level because the backflow stophas closed, a cellar could become flooded whena bath which is above the backflow level isemptied. It is moreover not possible to use a WCduring this period.
