Greetings, Alumni and Friends:

With spring comes inspiration for the young and young at heart. Andnowhere is this more true than on the campus of Morgan State University. This year, as last, there is much for Morgan students to be encouragedabout, as they look forward to a strong finish of their academic year or, forseniors, Commencement and the beginning of their journey in the world oftheir specialty and beyond. There is the sight of new buildings under con-struction, new programs in the student handbook and new organizationscommitted to partnering with the University. Most important, there is theknowledge our students have that they are not struggling alone, that theyhave the solid support of the Morgan State alumni who struggled beforethem and have made it.

For those of us on the “other side,” Morgan State alumni, today’s studentsare inspiration themselves. This issue of the Alumni News, with its storiesof professional success and generosity to alma mater, is dedicated to thoseelders who know giving back is what keeps us young!

The Morgan State University ROTC AlumniAssociation has brought honor and positive visi-bility to MSU on the national and world stagessince 1996. Now the chapter that came from thatassociation stands in the spotlight of honor itself,as the MSU National Alumni Association’s selec-tion as 2007 Chapter of the Year.

This year’s honoree was chartered as the MSUROTC Alumni Chapter in October 2004. After his many years as a leader in academia and thebroader community, people have become used to think-ing of Dr. Kenneth Mosely as a success story. But therewas a time when his plotline was not so clear.

“I had a decent GPA when I graduated from highschool, but I didn’t have the test scores I needed forMorgan,” he recalls.“I wound up having to take remedi-al math, remedial reading and remedial English. Thesewere new programs that (MSU) President (Martin D.)Jenkins had started. I had to take these classes five daysa week. I was a little embarrassed by that, but theyallowed me to catch up. When I did go on to the ROTCprogram, my writing and speaking skills had reallyimproved.”

After catching up, young Mosely moved to the front. Hecocaptained Morgan State’s CIAA championship swimteams in 1969 and 1970. At graduation in 1971, hereceived his B.S. in physical education and was recog-nized as a distinguished military student. He began hiscareer as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, whichgave him additional leadership, organizational andhuman relations skills. From there, he went on toKansas State University, where he earned an M.S. inphysical education, and to Indiana University, where hebecame the first African American to earn a doctoratein physical education with an emphasis in adaptedphysical education.

P.E.D. in hand, Dr. Mosely began work at South CarolinaState University in 1976. He retired in 2005 as a fullprofessor and chair of the Department of Health andPhysical Education. During his tenure at SCSU, Dr.Mosely served 11 years as project director of theNational Youth Sports Program and the USDA SummerFeeding Program and worked with many other commu-nity service organizations as a volunteer. He hasauthored more than 20 articles, presented more than 20professional papers and written proposals for 13 fund-ed grants totaling more than $850,000.

“I am extremely honored to have received this (SpecialAchievement) award,” says Dr. Mosely, now a chartermember of the South Atlantic Region MSU Alumnichapter, and actively involved with the Chapter’sfundraising activities, a member of the Varsity M Cluband a life member of the MSU National AlumniAssociation. “I attribute much of my success to whatMorgan did for me between 1966 and 1970.”
