Alumni NewsletterOctober 2012

From the Directors Desk Dear IMTian,It is great pleasure connecting with you all. All of you will agree that change is the only constant. In this regard, it is my duty to bring to you the changes that are happening at the Institute.

We have launched two new programs this year. The One year Executive MBA program has started under the leadership of Dr. Ali Zalzala. A number of senior executives from the UAE have enrolled and I believe this program will bring a lot of benefits to the Institute and Alumni in particular. The second program is perhaps backward integration, a four year undergraduate program in the lines of American business education system called the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) started under the stewardship of Dr. Kirti Khanzode. This program is unique to IMT Dubai as no other IMT sister institute has a bachelor’s program.

There are quite a few changes in the faculty profile. We have established strong relationships with our sister institutes and invited a number of faculty members from the Ghaziabad and Nagpur campuses. We will be extending this to Hyderabad as well in the near future. We have attracted a few faculty members from IIMs and JNU for short term visits to teach full courses to our MBA and DCP students. But for a few exceptions, visiting faculty members have stayed for at least as month to deliver their courses and they are available on campus throughout for student guidance and consultation. I believe the change would bring much more effective delivery. Simultaneously efforts are also underway to recruit full time faculty members from diverse backgrounds. By the end of this year, we would like to double the full time faculty strength at Dubai campus.

You might have heard of the changes in the student activities and administration as well. We are seriously striving to integrate entire student community on campus. Numbers of student committees have been formed, which includes participants from MBA, DCP and BSBA programs. I would like to bring your attention to the Placement Committee. The size of the committee has been increased and they work from a dedicated office under the guidance of Dr. Waheed and Ms. Meghavi. The ground work for current year internships and final placements has started much in advance and we believe whole hearted student involvement, and planned action can take us a long way in corporate internships and placements. Apart from this, we are working with IMT Ghaziabad also for placement and internship related activities.

In terms of improving the effectiveness and learning experience, we are increasing the case discussion and the behavioural stimulators in the course. We have subscribed for Harvard Business Publication cases to directly access and use them in the classrooms. We plan to provide the course pack of Harvard cases to students before the start of each semester.

I would like to invite you all to the campus to experience the new initiatives and spend time with me or any faculty member. Please free to share your views and thoughts about building our Institute into a great Institution.

- Dr. Janakiraman Moorthy.

Our acts of today will become precedents of tomorrow and the future is purchased by the present. This has inspired us to provide the best facilities for our students. Experience shows that

success is due less to ability than to zeal. The winner is one who gives himself to his work; body and soul. We at IMT are making collective and conscious efforts to achieve our goal of “Excellence in Education”.

The knowledge does not comprise all which is contained in the large term of education. The feelings are to be disciplined; the passions to be restrained, true and worthy motives are to be inspired. Pure morality is to be inculcated in all circumstances. All this is enshrined in the way this year’s issue of our newsletter ‘THE GRADUATE’ has been built up.It is indeed heartening to see the editorial team work very hard to make ‘The Graduate’ a success. I wish them all the best.

We call upon you all to come forward and make our alumni network a thriving platform for partnerships.

- Dr. Santanu Roy & Dr. Arvind Seth.

Dear Alumnus,Greetings from IMT! As you go through these pages I am sure it will bring back the memories of your days at IMT Dubai. Alumni play a significant role in the growth of the institute and reflect the image of the institute in various walks of life. We have made

this e-newsletter to address the long felt need for sharing and disseminat-ing news and views across the IMT community. The Institute will assist and support the alumni by enabling alumni meetings, get-togethers, and by providing administrative support for Alumni activities to be conducted in future.

The aim of the Alumni Association is to provide opportunities for the alumni to stay connected to their alma mater. We would like to receive communication from you and share it through the Alumnus magazine. Please write to us at [email protected]. Looking forward to staying connected!

- Dr. Vimi Jham.

Major Highlights - EventsAcademic Year 2011-12

AARAMBH , as the name was rightly chosen, was the kick-starter for most of us. The zeal and enthusi-asm of the organisers was matched equally by the crowd. The event started with a speech from the

director, which had its sway on us, throughout. The E.C.A committee worked with such fervour and attachment that left the sceptics spell-bound.

The address by the director was followed by the AD-MAD competition, wherein the teams had to come up with ‘’out of the box’’ advertisements for ‘’not so feasible products’’. From shampoos that reduce hair growth, to coffee that makes one fall asleep, the products were advertised accordingly with such exuberance and support, that the future of at least the marketing industry seems positive. Jokes aside, here is what one of the participants had to say. “...extremely well organised, this was a starting platform to showcase our talents, however the best part was the audience support.’’

The competition was followed by a short play by fellow DCP students, focusing on global exposure and the value of the IMT tag. The play had us all captivated, with such intensity that we couldn’t stop ourselves from asking for a repeat performance. The mirth of the event was continued by an entertaining dance performance that had us all grooving along with the performer, followed by a student group rendition of “wish you were here”, that made us nostalgic of the people we left behind in India, and that gave us courage and hope to fulfil our destinies, through this two year journey called M.B.A.

Bigger, better and grander as it was expected to be this year, Vaudeville, the annual inter-college fiesta organised by IMT-Dubai and Student hub, DIAC in association with Puranmal, Bank of Baroda, Dare to Compete, Creme 21, Amara, Gulf technical, UAE Exchange, Kaya Skin Clinic, Soy To Chutney and Jenny Flowers on the 8th March, 2011, did reach the celestial point. The dawn to dusk extravaganza comprised of a plethora of events, both academic and cultural.

The astounding footfall of around 600 and 380 participations from 18 universities from all over UAE is evidence big enough for its victory. We are thankful to various participating universities - BITS Pilani – Dubai; Canadian University of Dubai; Murdoch University; American College of

Dubai; Heriot Watt; MAHE Manipal; SP Jain Center of Management; London American City College; Winchester; Hult International Business School; Western International School; SZABIST; Wollongong University; BIT RANCHI, RAK; Middle Sex University; Emirates Aviation College; Preston University; Middlesex University – for their cooperation and support.

The academic events kick started the morning with a huge turn up and included events such as Impossible Marketing, Jeopardy, Eclectique and Money Machine which not only tested the wits of the students but made them put their business skills to practice as well. The buzz in the campus was unmatched. The winners of Impossible Marketing were IMT Dubai and BITS Pilani.

IMT Dubai won the trophy for Eclectique and University of Wollongong Dubai was the runners-up. Jeopardy was won by Western College, BIT Ranchi, RAK being the runners-up. The events were appreciated and enjoyed by all the partici-pants and the audience owing to their thought provoking structures.

In the afternoon, “FraGgeD” a LAN Gaming event was held which brought together all the gaming enthusiasts, competing for top honours in the games of Counter-Strike which was won by Heriot Watt and Age of Empires, won by IMT Dubai.

The heart throbbing cultural events commenced in the evening with the lighting of the auspicious lamp which was graced by the presence of Mr. Ibrahim Jamel, Director of Operations Education Cluster TECOM who was the Chief Guest; Dr. Farhad Rad-Serecht , Director , IMT Dubai; Mr. Ashok Gupta, CEO, Bank of Baroda, the guest of Honour; Padmashree Smt. Geeta Mahalik, Padma Shri & Sangeet Natak Academy awardee and Dr. Abhilasha, Head of Office of Student Services, IMT Dubai. The lamp lighting was followed by vandana presented by

Dhanashree Warrior through her graceful Bharat Natyam moves.

The crowd in the amphitheatre was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of Smt. Geeta Mahalik’s performing art which was followed by various inter collegiate competitions. Sound of Music, the singing competition was won by BIT Ranchi, RAK. Talent Station, which grabbed a lot of appreciation, was won by BIT Ranchi, RAK again and so was Dance O’ Mania. Mahe Manipal bagged the runners up trophy for dance. Cest’ La Mode saw the sizzling Guys & Girls from IMT Dubai walking the ramp with their ‘to die for’ attitude. Loop De Ville,

war of the DJs, which was the USP event of Vaudeville’11 was won by DJ Nitesh of the university of Wollongong Dubai. Apart from the competi-tions, the food stalls were a hit amongst the students.

There was close competition in almost all the events, hence making judging the toughest job of the day. However, with their outstanding performance in all the events and five trophies in their kitty, BITS-Ranchi, were adjudged the overall winners of the day.

Dr. Abhilasha Singh, Head of Student Services, IMT Dubai said, “Every year we strive to make Vaudeville bigger and better than what it was in the previous year, and as usual my students have done a brilliant jobs in fulfilling all my expectations. We had brilliant performances and record number of participation with over 300 students from all over the UAE participating here”

We are grateful to our media partners– 106.2 HUM FM, Dare to Compete and Wazzup? for their constant support.

Lisa James, an alumni, says, “This is the third Vaudeville that I’ve been a part of, now as an employee. Being part of it again was as remarkable as it was the first time around. All of us have thoroughly enjoyed every part of Vaudeville from the planning phases to the spectacular performances during the event.”

It feels great to declare Vaudeville’11 a huge success after all the running around and constraints that were confronted during the various phases started from planning. Apart from the pride that we IMTians take in being able to organize something at this level, we aspire to grow every year with new ideas and unrelenting hard work.

Alumni EventsAlumni Meet 2011, Dubai Campus"Life isn't a matter of milestones, but moments." And as you go further down the lane those moments will be the most precious things in life. Especially the ones you spend with your friends, laughing, fighting and cribbing with no care for the world. Such moments were brought back to life when the alumni of the Ghaziabad and Dubai campus of IMT gathered on a beautiful Friday morn-ing at the Dubai campus. This was the first ever Alumni meet of both

the campuses organised together. With the sun shining brightly as if in anticipation of a joyous day, the alumni of IMT began arriving on campus by 10:30 am. This was followed by Alumni registrations. The venue was soon filled with cheerful greetings and joyous laughter. By 12 PM the formal function commenced.

Apoorva Dumra and Rohith Bhat, final year students, delivered the welcome address and invited the first registered students to light the lamp and inaugurate the function. After which, a video was played which showed the growth of IMT Dubai campus since its inception. The president and representatives of the “IMT Alumni Club” were also announced at the meet.

Mr. Vikram Shah and Mr. Rohit Sawhney were elected as the president for the Ghaziabad campus and Dubai campus, respectively.Subsequently, Vikram Shah (1988 batch), Ridhesh Sharma (2010 batch) from the Ghaziabad campus and Prateek Kewalramani, Raghav Sood and Rohith Sawhney from Dubai campus spoke of their times at the campus and mentioned a few ideas for the growth of the institute. The faculty too was invited to address the alumni.

In his speech, Dr. Mohan Agarwal related himself as a ‘Grandfather’ whose family gathered together after many years. He mentioned that the college had recently signed a contract with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation for a diploma in Logistics and said that this is a sure sign of the growth & success of the campus.

Dr. Abhilasha spoke about the memorable days spent on IMT Dubai’s campus and the troublesome moments then. She referred to them as ‘Sweet Memories’, gifted to her by her students. She said “They are still my students and will always remain close to my heart”. Later on, Dr Ghosh spoke about job opportunities in Dubai and India and the compe-tition between the different IMT campuses. Mr. Ravishankar, CEO, Oman Insurance, a Ghaziabad alumni of 1988 batch was also present at the meet and spoke on the benefits of networking and on job environ-ment in Middle East.

Dr. Vimi Jham, Associate Professor, Marketing expressed her happiness at seeing all the alumni gathered and shared her experiences at IMT Ghaziabad with the alumni. Soon after, the workshop “Brand IMT” began and ideas for publicising IMT as a brand flowed in from all directions. Mr. Ridhesh Sharma suggested a public relation agency for the PR activities of the college. He also suggested a database for the alumni so as to keep in constant touch with them. Mentorship programs by the most successful alumni, more advertisements in magazines and newspapers, Sampark-e newsletter with the campus happenings for alumni, word of mouth promotion at work places etc. were a few other suggestions.

As the workshop concluded, lunch was served at the college canteen followed by an informal session for the alumni. The session commenced with Madhur Vyas (2010 batch – IMT Dubai) sharing his experiences at the campus followed by Satnam Singh of IMT Ghaziabad. It revived the beautiful memories in the hearts of all present. Later followed a session of karaoke, where a few alumni sang and enjoyed themselves. As they parted with promises to keep in touch the joy on their faces at having

met their dear friends clearly showed that more of such occasions can be expected soon. The event was indeed a great success and the institute and its alumni look forward to more such gatherings.

IMT Dubai Alumni, Delhi Chapter Meet1st April’12, was a long awaited day for the IMT Dubai family as we formally inaugu-rated our Delhi Alumni chapter. Dr. Mohan Agrawal and Dr. Arvind Seth presided over the chapter meet.

Alumnus from all the previous batches were in attendance, Dr. Mohan Agarwal stated the event as a beginning of a new relationship between the Alumni and Institute and expressed his opinion of Alumni relations to be one of the best platforms to grow further. He urged alumni to active-ly participate in Alumni building efforts. He also shared with all those present, the rapid strides that campus was making in terms of academics, accreditations and corporate interface.

Dr. Arvind Seth also expressed his happiness at the inauguration of Delhi Chapter of Alumni and gave everyone his best wishes to build on this platform. He also shared some of his experiences of how well IMT Dubai Alumni’s were doing in corporate world today and how they could be channelized to build a strong alumni institute relationship.

Alumni present were really happy on the inauguration of Delhi Chapter and shared inputs on how they could build on this foundation through the use of Technology, frequent meetings and active involvement in institute building activities.

The event was a great success and has laid the base for a strong Delhi chapter, after the successful inauguration of the Dubai Chapter last December; Delhi will be the second Alumni chapter for IMT Dubai.

Workshop: What Makes a Winner? Exploring the Power of the SubconsciousGuest Speaker: Ms. Neeru Singh, Alumni 1989 batch, IMT GhaziabadDate: 21st November ‘11

“Life’s too short to be able to understand oneself, yet we often end up trying to understand others lifelong”

With this very theme of introspection and understanding the power of subconscious mind, an informative workshop was organized and conducted. Ms. Neeru Singh, our guest speaker, enlightened the student gathering, with a wonderful showcase of experience, highlighting the importance of the subconscious self. She articulated the idea and empha-sized the need for people to believe in their abilities, filtering out the

conflicting judgmental opinions of others. Involving the audience, a pre-requisite for any successful workshop, was properly taken care of by our guest speaker. For instance, a five-minute meditation session was carried out, aimed at helping the audience to identify and visualize their respective fears, taking control of them and eventually making an attempt to get rid of them.

The guest speaker gave a number of situational as well as experience based examples that constantly kept the audience pondering. She urged the students to know and identify their talents and to trust themselves to excel in them. She reiterated the importance of realizing that past experi-ences have a bearing on our fears, our course of action and our level of self-belief. She also stressed about how making the present moment count, is what determined how close or how far we end up from our various objectives.

Ms. Neeru refrained from in-depth discussions on spiritual aspects, but didn’t undermine the role of “soul-level” spirituality. She beautifully summarized the importance of self-consciousness, in a sentence and I quote “There are a lot of things you don’t have, because you once believed you can’t have them”. When an informative speaker meets an inquisitive audience, knowledge tends to flow. This indeed is the purpose of organizing such workshops, seminars and guest lectures.

Guest Lecture: Brand PositioningAn IMT alumni, Amitabh Swarup has been in the communication business for over 22 years now. Mr. Samar Khan (Brand Manager- Life Style Stores Dubai), a graduate of the 2008-2010 batch shared his experiences with students and gave

them valuable career advise during the orientation session, 2012 held at IMT Dubai Campus.

Life at and after IMT-Praful Anchaliya, Batch 2008-10, IMT-Dubai.

Request for penning down memories is very

tempting. Toughest part is self-imposed restriction for keeping it short. I am a city bred. Having come from a tier-2 city in India, I always was more curious than those from metros, resulting in hyper activity and insomnia. It so mounted my mind that even today, I feel connected. Frankly speaking,

Day-1 was difficult, arriving into the campus at night with desert all around and dim lights where only a few souls were visible and not having my specs on gave me a Resident-Evil feel. But finally, the dust settled and I took my first steps inside the campus and don’t regret even a single day after that. Yes, as a sin wave, everything in this world has ups and downs but that’s nothing to mention. I’ve met people from institutions which have attained world fame, trust me when I say, they’re no different.

We had a famous joke in our times: “We’re on a tour of Dubai for 2 years by Thomas Cook”, MBA degree is free with that” :D and it went on for both the years we were there. No need to be offended by this because we came from a hard working routine of studies in our under-grad courses and our MBA curriculum was pretty relaxed as compared to the one back home. Hence, lot of time to create memories. But I’d say, what I learnt was worth the time and effort since I am a strong believer of the fact that “studying” is a formality. I’d rather study less and develop my personality in such a way that I could suit up for any and every situation coming in my future and that exactly what I did. Well, for sure, that one way of doing it and other way we all know, sink deep into books and make your way up but “God bless you, with that”.

My life at the Dubai campus of IMT had more +ve peaks than –ve ones. I was blessed with amazing “friends”, rattling “classmates” & great “profes-sors”. Should I credit the management, I would be lying. I stayed high on life and I still am which helped me figure a way for everything.

That canteen food, the football match, cricket in the parking, complaining about the basketball court, messing in the library, sleeping in the class rooms, late night walks, clicking pictures whenever get a chance, bunking guest lectures, spending hours at “China-town (boundaries)”, yelling and howling at 0000hours, of course for birthday’s, endless counter strike gaming, oh dear, list seems never ending and I am all nostalgic now.

Life promptly changed after leaving the campus, suddenly I felt responsi-ble for myself with strong urge to turn into a brand, and no one can deny buying. My entrepreneurship skills were on top of my talent list but had to go back home in a few months because it takes a lot of things than I initially had planned, that’s a different chapter all together. It’s has been a continuous learning process ever since, I’ve switched a few industries now and found out that ‘no matter’ what industry you are in, it just takes patience to climb up the ladder. “Smart working” if done, is an add-on.

Currently, I am into Media industry working into Research and Analytics. At regular intervals, I keep brushing my PR skills which are highly appreci-ated in my industry. I would say it has been a wonderful but not easy journey from where I started to where I stand now. But isn’t that the purpose of life – Figure it out until you can absorb everything around you. It’s too early to comment any further since it just a couple of years and learning never ends, so I wish all the alumnus, current & forth coming batches “Good Luck and farewell”. Enjoy Dubai, enjoy your studies, enjoy with your friends/crushes/beloveds, brush your skills, prepare for the worst, have a successful plan A, yet be ready with plan B, overall, just do more than what you can.

There and Back Again-Lisa James, Batch of 2009-11, IMT-Dubai

When I was asked to write about my experience, I wasn't sure how to begin. There are not enough words in this world to describe what I felt, what I'm still feeling. I have been at IMT Dubai for three and a half years now, two years studying and the rest working here. Several people, both alumnus and juniors often come upto me and say that I am lucky, that I still get to be at IMT after graduating. I wholeheartedly and completely agree. I love it all. My Alma Mater, my job, the challenge and the wonderful people I've come to know. Everything.

My relationships with the students, staff and faculty have changed now that I work here. Nevertheless, I will admit that I do miss my student life on campus sometimes. Especially, when the campus is buzzing with activity. It brings back the memories of those two years like an oncoming train. It comes rushing back to me. I remember those days where we never could go to bed before 3 am. The times when we've sat up all night to study or to plan for the activities on campus. The days that we've been through without sleep. And the fact that we loved it, each and every minute of it. I remember all the Birthday 'parties' (you know what I mean!), the Maggie and Popcorn cook-outs in the pantry.

The walks to Academic City, trips to the city, the classes, all the presentations and case studies we did, the newsletters, events, and festivals we were a part of. I'm in touch with almost everyone I knew during those two years. But when you're an alumni, and you're on campus there is something in the air. Something you cannot describe. Something that you badly want to be a part of, but you know that you can now only cherish in your heart. I guess what I miss the most was the world that IMT provided. The perfect place for a student to be whatever they want to be. Thank you IMT-D.

The best part, however, is to share my experiences with the students and watch them mould themselves into perfection. I feel great when I can see that glitter in their eyes when I talk about those wonderful times. And I'm ecstatic when they inspire themselves to make their student life at IMT as special as mine was.

I am truly blessed to be here at IMT Dubai.

An Ode to IMT Dubai-Kreisel Joelle D’Lima, Batch of 2011-12, IMT Dubai.

If fashion was inching towards curves and paunches, IMT Dubai batch of 2012 would be walking the runway today. Unfortunately the campus is not blessed with long winding roads that is often treaded to fight the stubborn belly fat. However, the walk to bravo or DIAC definitely fulfils

this requirement. On one such walk down to Bravo – IMT Dubai’s adda, I also walked down the memory lane of two years spent here.

We had often heard that MBA was not a place to make friends but to prove oneself. In retrospect, I am sure most of us would discard this hearsay with the same fervour with which we have reject-ed the validity of CGPA to evaluate our intelli-

gence. MBA was a conscious career choice for some of us and for the rest, it was the societal pressure to grab a high paying job. Nonetheless, each one of us had a dream when we had knocked on the doorsteps of this college. Every single individual on this campus strived to establish his/her identity in this crowd. With us now being in the last phase and with the imminent farewell staring at us, each one of us has managed to do that. Be it with being the class topper or the last bencher, a teetotaller or a beer-guzzler, an active gossiper or being a favourite targeted victim, a go-getter or a free-rider, marking attendance in the library or at the coffee shop, celebrating single-hood or dating fellow campus inhabitants, being artistic or creatively challenged, following the known path or making a way of one’s own; each one of us is distinct and unique.

Home is because of its residents and to go by that, IMT Dubai Campus in the midst of the desert at Dubai International Academic City was no less than a home. Though we may not talk to each one of us but the mere presence is enough to give a sense of security and belonging. Some of us, who have stayed back during vacations and seen the deserted campus, will vouch for this. Numerous conversations, taking others’ case or being made fun of, tiffs and fights, making plans for city visits and trips outside, running to catch the bus, hiding alcohol and smoke to avoid getting into trouble and thousands of more such memories plague each and every corner of this campus.

Whether it was the little fights while organizing events like alumni meet, Ujaas, Vaudeville, Alumni meet or the disappointment (for a short while) with the attitude of a few of our batch mates, or any other events that were organized, IMT Dubai has definitely made us learn to accept things the way they are and work to the best interests of the institute. College brand names are definitely made because of the students pursuing their courses in the institute. Although some of us did not realize this in the beginning, but towards the end, we all did learn to join our hands togeth-er in making IMT Dubai, a brand name that will only receive laurels in the coming years.

Looking back, we may or may not have achieved what we had set on to, but these two years mark a special place in our lives owing to the friends and memories that this place bestowed on us. The best memories in every walk of my journey from 14th September, 2010 until 10th May, 2012 were with my amazing batch mates of September 2010 and our seniors and juniors who have supported us in every little thing we chose to do.

I wish I could leave a bookmark here and turn back to this page when nostalgia takes its grip on me and these fond memories haunt me in future.

The institute and the people I have met here have definitely made a place in my heart – One that I will remember throughout my life.

Thank you IMT Dubai and cheers to all the awesome people out here. I so wish I could get back to the day I first joined this institute and relive every single day. I am sure most of us – the alumni of IMT share my opinion. Nevertheless, as Robert Frost rightly quoted “In three words I can sum up everything I learnt about life… ‘It goes on’…”Adiós!!

He is the Founder and CEO of Praxis Advertising, a boutique advertising hotspot head-quartered in Dubai with offices in UAE and India. Praxis, is one of the creative agencies in the region, with a slew of awards under their belt and a handful of successful brand stories in their credentials.

Mr. Samar Khan (Brand Manager- Life Style Stores Dubai), a graduate of the 2008-2010 batch shared his experiences with students and gave

them valuable career advise during the orientation session, 2012 held at IMT Dubai Campus.

Mr.Satnam Singh Vohra (Principal Consulant , Ramco Systems) and Mr. Bipin Mehrotra (Commercial Director, Midland Group Dubai), both IMT Ghaziabad Alumni were also present during the orientation sharing their experiences and valued inputs.

Loop De Ville,

Alumni ExperienceLife at IMT
