From the Preacher’s Desk
“Famous Last Words" In our Sunday evening worship hour, I’ve been preaching a series titled, “The Cost of Freedom.” It follows the final moments of Christ’s life, from his trial to his execution on the cross. During our last sermon, we focused on the final words of Christ amid his crucifixion, “Eli, Eli, lama Sabachthani?” In English that is translated, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Our article this week is not to break down what that final phrase meant; we already spent a lot of time uncovering that truth. However, I could not help but think about the idea of a person’s “last words.” As I mentioned from the pulpit, I honestly believe that Christ’s final words were a lasting message to the world. I don’t believe God was forsaking Christ at all, but rather Christ wanted us to recall the words in Psalm 22 that overflow with God’s love, redemption, and continued care for His people.
Regardless if you agree with me or not, over two thousand years have passed, and we are still discussing Christ’s final words. That idea of a person’s “famous last words” has always fascinated me. I can’t imagine after I’m gone, that most of the world would continue to analyze, study, live, and breathe my words, like Christ. Nonetheless, I can’t help but think about what my final words will be, and what impact they might leave behind.
God has a lot to say in the Bible about the power of words. Proverbs 18:1 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:29, “Let not corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” With that in mind, I want to share some people’s “final words” and highlight one that I’ve always found most intriguing.
Harriet Tubman: When she was dying in 1913, she gathered her family around that they sang together. Her last words were “Swing low, sweet chariot.”
Isaac Newton: Known as the father of science, when he died, he was humble. He said, “I don’t know what I may seem to the world. But as to myself, I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore and diverting myself now and then in finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than the ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”
Leonardo Da Vinci: “I have offended God and mankind because my word did not reach the quality it should have.” Da Vinci, who is most famous for painting The Mona Lisa didn’t think it was good enough.
Groucho Marx: The American comedian, actor, writer, and television star left the world with the words, “This is no way to live.”
The “famous last words” that I have always thought of were those of Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, who was responsible for revolutionizing the computer industry. It’s believed that 50% of all smartphone users have an Apple iPhone. In America alone, 64% of people own some sort of Apple product. Steve Jobs passed away at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer complications. At his memorial service on October 16, 2011, his sister shared Steve’s final words. A man worth billions uttered these final words, “Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow.” After everything that he accomplished in life, everything that he had created, and the legacy that he had left, Steve Jobs’ final words were, “oh wow.”
We may never know if Jobs was expressing hope or despair in those final moments. What I do know is that I want my final words to mean something. Like Christ on the cross, I would love to know that I left one final lesson to my family, friends, and the world. Here’s the lesson for you, since we don’t know when we are going to leave this earth, are we ready to share those final words? And would they be a moment of peace and glory, or sadness and regret? Let’s live our lives in such a way that we look forward to what comes next, and only leave behind a final loving, righteous thought. David Olmos
Please come speak with me if you would like to be one of our hosts for the progressive dinner this year. It will take place on Friday, December 17. Thank you in advance.
A sign up sheet has been placed in the foyer if you would like to host a youth devotional. I have given a space where you can specify whether you’d like to just sponsor one at the church building, or if you would instead like to host one in your home. As always, we appreciate your support and dedication to helping make our youth group thrive.
