PAGE 3 • COMMUNITY NEWSBecome an Extension Master Gardener in Carlton County

If you have an interest in plants and gardening and would enjoy sharing that interest with others, apply to become a University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener volunteer. Applications are being accepted for the Carlton County Extension Master Gardener Program now until October 31, 2019.

Individuals selected for the program begin an internship that starts with the Master Gardener core course training on January 2020. The course is taught online or in-person at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Instructors are University of Minnesota Extension educators and faculty.

Following the course, interns will complete volun-teer service in the first year, working with local Master Gardener volunteers on a variety of projects that edu-cate the public about gardening and horticulture. You might answer plant questions by phone or at an in-formation booth, write a newspaper column, or make a presentation to a community group. The primary projects in Carlton County include Plant sales, garden tours, community gardens and question and answer booths at local events.

After completing the internship, you become a certified University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener. To remain certified, Master Gardeners must contribute at least 25 hours of volunteer service annually. The only pre-requisite is a love of gardening the core course will teach you the rest!

For more information about the Extension Master Gardener program go to www.mg.umn.edu. or call the University of Minnesota Extension Carlton County, 218-384-3511.

Minnesota Master Naturalist Program invites volunteers to serve on National Public Lands Day at Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center

This year, the MN Master Naturalist Program encourages residents to join this growing tradition of stewardship through service at one of 19 locations in Minnesota.

Volunteers are encouraged to register before Sep-tember 7th to receive a Master Naturalist NPLD 2019 t-shirt. Registration officially closes on September 18th. To find the National Public Lands Day site near-est you, go to: https://z.umn.edu/NPLD19 For a map of locations: https://arcg.is/1KeWaz0

STEM Camp June 17-20 was a huge success! Kids had lots of fun while learning about different types of technology including chroma key (green screen), coding, robotics, and circuits. Engineering skills were used to create their own solar ovens, life-sized arcade games, ferris wheels, and bridges. A vari-ety of science experiments were also incorporated throughout the week, as well as many other fun activities. STEM Camp ended with the kids hosting their family and friends to come to their arcade, and the South Ter-race gym was packed with visitors.

It was put on this year by four Carlton teachers - Kari Ries, Kara Dahl, Carrie Ragsdale, and Mi-chael Mattinen. The help of high school volunteers Scott Rousseau, Spencer Rousseau, and Christian Herman was greatly appreciated throughout the week. Many of the kids and teachers are already looking forward to camp again next summer!

Carlton’s 24th Annual Summer Learning Camp was held August 5-8, 2019 at Carlton’s South Terrace Elementary School! The theme this year was “Around the World in Four Days” and it was filled with fun and learning about different places around the world. Students enjoyed celebrating all the diverse cultures through cooking, music, games, and crafts. Some highlights during the week were learning how to make sushi, STEM proj-ects of famous landmarks on each continent, making a rainforest in a jar, and building our own plane to travel around the world! Thank you, world explorers, for an amazing week at Learn-ing Camp! A huge thank you to our new camp coordinator, Megan McLain, and her camp staff of Desi Kuhl and Rachel Swanson. And thank you to our student volunteers, Amy Schwoch and Harper Carlson!

It seems the summer has gone by quickly and suddenly another school

year is here. This is always an exciting time of year as the buildings are cleaned, the floors are freshly waxed and shiny, teachers are starting to appear to begin their preparations and students are here for their high school athletic practices. This time of year also causes me to reflect on the pride I feel in the work we do, the importance of our responsibilities and our commit-ment to the success of every student. I hope every student, parent, guardian and community member knows that Carlton School staff are here and ready to give students our best every single day.

The upcoming school year will bring some exciting changes. We are expanding our use of Chromebooks for instruction and taking advantage of the many online tools and resources to support our instruction. Our MS/HS students will have a new math curric-

ulum that our teachers have chosen and are excited to implement. We are now offering a full day, 3 days per week program for 4-year olds, in addition to our other early childhood classes. South Terrace’s facility improvements are completely done and students and staff will benefit from improved air quality, more effective temperature-controlled classrooms and a fully operational fire suppression/sprinkler system. And of course, this will be the first season for a Carl-ton-Wrenshall Raptors football team. Plan to come to the tailgate party at South Terrace at 5:30pm with the first kick off at 7:00pm on August 30th!

I also know the upcoming school year will be very important as our School Board and community are going to have significant discussions about the future of the district. I understand our challenges and I am excited about the possibilities. I ask all community residents to take the time to become informed on the

options the district is considering. We are gathering data on the options on how to address our facility, enrollment, budget and academic needs and priori-ties. We understand there is some urgency in making decisions. As superintendent, I have a responsibility with the School Board to provide our constituents (parents, guardians, tax payers) accurate informa-tion based on facts. These decisions are not simple. Any decision on facility, consolidation, or potential collaborations with neighboring districts will impact students, staff and tax payers.

Please take the time to be informed in the upcom-ing weeks and months about the long-term options for the Carlton School District. I anticipate we will have public meetings for sharing information and for receiving input. Please contact any Board member or myself with questions or input. In the meantime, please remember we have students and staff in our schools today that need everyone’s support and assur-ance that we care about them as individuals and are committed to their success.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

PAGE 16 • COMMUNITY NEWS

The second annual Carlton Community National Night Out was another huge success. The weather was absolutely perfect, there were many activities for all ages and you can’t beat a free meal for the whole family! This truly is an incredible community event that really encompasses the small town heart and attitude that makes everyone love Carlton! This night only happens because of the overwhelming support of so many businesses, organizations and people in our community. Thank you to Thrivent Financial(Carlton Office) for their generous monetary donation which provided the hot dogs, buns, chips, napkins, plates, cups, lemonade and the Zoomobile! Thank you to Magnolia Café and the Streetcar Kitchen & Pub for teaming up to provide the ice cream and root beer for the floats; Jim N’ Jo’s Katering for the watermelon; Brent’s Heating and Cooling for providing one of the

most popular activities-the Bounce House; the Friends of the Carlton Public Library for sponsoring the de-lightful music provided by Spencer Walton; the City of Carlton for helping to advertise and promote the event by creating and sending out postcards; to the follow-ing for providing activities for attendees to participate in: City of Carlton, Carlton Public Library, Bethesda Lutheran Church, Minnesota Whitewater Rafting, Bulldog Spirit Club and the Carlton High School; the Carlton Fire Department for loaning us many tables and chairs and for the use of their grill for cooking; Mike Orlowski (Mike’s Repair Service) for donat-ing propane and being the main grill chef (and also helping to promote the event with the old Fire Truck)! As you can see this event is supported and provided by MANY businesses and organizations – the Carlton Community is blessed to have them all here! Lastly,

a HUGE THANK YOU to all of our awesome volun-teers-they worked so hard and did so with smiles on their faces-they are truly the rock stars of the night!
