Main AttractionsWhat main films will play at the Ambler? This section lists the Main Attractions that we intend to play in the coming weeks. Additional unlisted films will also become available. This list is only an educated guess, though, since film release plans often change. When will these main films play? Scheduling our Main Attractions is week-to-week. On Monday, we decide what main films will play starting that Friday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we set the showtimes for the upcoming week and then update our website and telephone hotline. We also send out a weekly email (which you can receive by signing up at our website). After fifty years of searching, Philomena solicits the help of a cynical journalist in her quest. Judi Dench gives a compassionate performance as the long-suffering, but ever-optimistic mom and Steve Coogan complements her in his inimitable dry manner. Stephen Frears (The Queen) directed.

Inside Llewyn Davis USA – Joel and Ethan Coen – 1 hr 45 minThe latest from the Coen Brothers, INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS follows a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Guitar in hand, huddled against the New York winter, he struggles to make it against mounting obstacles. Beautifully made, this new Coens’ movie ranks with their best in its balance of biting satirical humor and deep melancholy. Starring Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan.

The Invisible WomanUK – Ralph Fiennes – 1 hr 51 min Period biographical dramas don’t come much better than THE INVISIBLE WOMAN, an involving portrayal of the relationship Charles Dickens maintained with a much younger woman at the end of his life. The movie is beautiful in its camerawork and production design, and extremely British in its emotional restraint. Ralph Fiennes directs and stars opposite Felicity Jones.

Limited Engagements We try to play each of our Main Attractions films for a full multi-week run. Sometimes, however, we are unable to play a film in a timely or complete way, and it becomes a question of either squeezing it in or not playing it at all. We then often schedule that film for a couple of mid-week screenings, called Limited Engagements. Make sure that you sign up for our weekly email blast, so that you don’t miss these short, last-chance screenings.

The Lunchbox India - Ritesh Batra – 1 hr 44 min in English & Hindi w/subtitles In Mumbai, India, a misdelivered lunchbox brings together two very different people — a neglected housewife and a solitary widower on the verge of retirement. This beautiful film effortlessly weaves themes of gender, class, and generational differences into a simple love story. Whether it’s cooking a meal, reading a letter, or riding a crowded train, the film’s small moments are precise and completely enchanting.

Labor Day USA – Jason Reitman – 1 hr 51 minA single mother shelters an escaped convict and slowly falls for him over the course of one eventful weekend in writer/director Jason Reitman’s adaptation of Joyce Maynard’s novel. Every new Reitman film (Juno, Up in the Air, Young Adult) is full of surprises. LABOR DAY is an intriguing new step in a different direction, having a lyrical quality that is perhaps reminiscent of Terrence Malick. Starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin.

The PastFrance – Asghar Farhadi – 2 hr 10 min w/subtitlesIranian Asghar Farhadi’s French-language, Paris-set follow-up to his celebrated A Separation is superb. Here an Iranian man reunites with his estranged French wife in Paris to finalize their divorce. This is soon complicated by secrets, lies and revelations as their cluttered pasts muddy the way forward. This is masterful filmmaking.

August: Osage County USA – John Wells – 1 hr 59 minAUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY tells the dark, funny, touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family and their dysfunctional mother. A tragedy brings them back to their Oklahoma house and they fill it with talking, laughing, cursing, crying and plenty of acting. And this A-list cast makes it work. Just sit back and watch the fireworks with Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Abigail Breslin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, and Sam Shepard.

NebraskaUSA - Alexander Payne - 1 hr 55 min b&wNEBRASKA is Alexander Payne’s new film, the latest since his critically acclaimed The Descendants. The film follows an aging father, played by Bruce Dern, who makes the long trip from Montana to Nebraska to “collect his lottery winnings,” while accompanied by his estranged son. A wistful ode to small-town Midwestern life, this black & white, prairie-set odyssey fits right into Alexander Payne’s canon of films.
