June 2014 • Green Valley Recreation News Page 1

During the past five months, my time as CEO has been instructive, education-al, inspiring, and yes, at times challenging. A few recurring themes serve as guideposts and reinforce what I know to be true.

First of all, all GVR mem-bers – including me - have a foundational commonality. We are property owners in GVR deed-restricted neigh-borhoods, and regardless of our level of participation in GVR’s plethora of recreation and leisure service opportu-nities, we want our property values to remain strong and rise.

Secondly, at some point in our lives, we learned the val-ue of recreation and leisure as an indicator of quality of life and wellbeing, and its im-portance to maintaining civil societies and communities of wellbeing.

Folks I have met who take advantage of all that GVR has to offer seem incredibly happy and content. They use time wisely, engage in healthy pursuits and lifestyles, and often share their talents and spirits for active civic engage-ment to give something back to our communities. That’s why you’ll soon see a return to ‘Recreation & Leisure Ser-vices’ language within GVR’s operations and publications.

Lastly, I observe and recog-nize that patience is a virtue, especially when there is so much to do. There is a time to innovate and pursue new opportunities, and a time to wait.

I am pleased to update GVR Members regarding the 11-Point GVR Work Plan (Plan) adopted by the Board of Directors for 2014-2015 on March 24, 2014. Beginning with an initial articulation of the need for a plan to move GVR forward during the CEO interview process, the actual development and ap-proval of the 11-Point Plan is the result of an intentionally designed process.

Charged with this respon-sibility, the design of the 11-Point Plan is based on best practices for non-profit as-

sociations and corporations while simultaneously taking into consideration the cul-ture and specific needs of the GVR community. Following review and input by GVR department heads, the 11-Point Plan was unanimously endorsed by the GVR Board of Directors.

GVR members attending the Annual Meeting on March 25, or any of the series of “Conversations with Kent” in

March and April (more than 300 members participated), or who read the front-page article in an April edition of the Green Valley News, may still hear the words “ambi-tious” or even “audacious” in reference to the 11-Point Plan still ringing in their ears.

In any case, these descrip-tive terms are accurate. It is BIG thinking that inherently brings opportunities for envi-sioning, innovation, and col-

laboration as we embrace the future potential for GVR and the 11-Point Plan takes on a life of its own, energizing to some, yet scary to others.

All own it now – CEO, GVR staff, Board, and members – and it will take each of us working and pulling our cre-ative talents together to bring all 11-Points to fruition.

MEMbER COdE OF CONduCtAll users of GVR facilities are required to comply

with published rules and regulations. All users are expected to show common courtesy to

employees, directors, volunteers, and other members and guests.

All users shall refrain from using offensive language

and behavior; such actions shall not be tolerated.Members are responsible for the conduct of their

guests. Any violation of the above Code of Conduct may result in a member having his or her rights and privileges suspended.

11-Point Plan to GVR staff in voluntary meetings held during non-work hours. About one-third of GVR’s employees were able to attend the meetings to hear about the Plan, where I planted seeds asking for their involvement and input.

Already, several staff stepped forward, offering their energy and talents to this pro-cess. I expect that all GVR staff will play important roles in contributing to building GVR and propelling the Corporation for-ward as we actualize various elements of the Plan.

The 11-Points of the Plan have been re-fined into a working document with specific, measurable tasks and implementation sched-ules. This working document will assist me and staff colleagues with Plan implementa-tion by keeping us organized, focused, and on track.

With GVR Board of Director oversight, periodic updates will be provided. Several staff have been recently assigned “liaison” positions respective to Board Committees and newly formed Task Forces. I will serve in an active role as liaison to the Growth Task Force, a Board-led Ad Hoc Commit-tee. Staff liaison appointments reflect an administrative change to use staff time and content expertise wisely, afford adequate

follow-up, and enhance communication between committee leadership, staff, and GVR members.

One aspect of the 5th-Point of the Plan involves communication. Building on the success of “Conversations with Kent,” we will soon implement regular, topic-specific electronic surveys to take the pulse of mem-ber needs and interests deemed integral to achieving Plan goals. So when you receive a brief online survey from GVR, please take a few moments to provide input.

As members of this unique organization and residents of this beautiful desert envi-ronment, we value GVR and believe that by leading an active and engaged lifestyle, the quality of our lives is enhanced.

Comprehensive and strategic planning re-mains at the hub of actions required to keep GVR vibrant and attractive to members and not-yet-members waiting to find out about us. Maybe we got it right with the 11-Point Plan and maybe we didn’t. Nonetheless, it’s our Plan, and as General George S. Patton barked, “A good plan executed right now is far better than a perfect plan executed next week.”

June Splinters From the boardBoard Affairs Committee – the Board Affairs Committee

agreed to recommend to GVR’s Board of Directors to replace AZ Title 33 language to conform to AZ Title 10 in the Corpo-rate Policy Manual (CPM.) The June 11 Board Affairs Com-mittee meeting has been cancelled.

Fiscal Affairs Committee – the Fiscal Affairs Committee reviewed the first quarter financial report. There was a discus-sion on a re-prioritization methodology which will be estab-lished by Facilities staff. Several committee members asked for an understanding of GVR’s MAP (Members Assistance Program), the selection process, how many members apply for

funds and where the MAP funds come from. CEO Blumen-thal provided the committee with a high-level project list the Fiscal Affairs Committee would be responsible for over the 2014 - 2015 year. The June 12 Fiscal Affairs Committee meet-ing has been cancelled.

Planning & Evaluation – Joe Roth presented a priority process for rating club and member requests. The committee agreed to try the process as a trial pilot program for the remaining 2014 year. The Lapidary and Tennis Table Clubs provided presenta-tions for projects their clubs are interested in. Other clubs pro-vided brief presentations for their project requests at the May 13,

2014 P&E meeting at 9am in the MSC Annex. The June 10 Plan-ning & Evaluation Committee meeting has been cancelled.

The Board of Directors unanimously approved changing the language in the CPM to comply with AZ Statutes Title 10.

The Board unanimously approved changing the Growth Committee to an Ad Hoc Committee with the charge and goal remaining the same as the sub-committee with an end date of June 30, 2015, and meetings held in Executive Session as the chair feels necessary.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be held on June 3, 2014 at 1:30 PM in the Desert Hills Auditorium.

Need help? Call the COA!Are You On the List? How would you like to be among the first to find out what’s

happening at GVR? Want to have the opportunity to voice your opinion on issues before key decisions are made?

Well, now you can, as GVR expands its “opt-in” email pro-gram as an integral part of GVR’s ambitious 11-Point Work Plan.

Simply by submitting your email address and agreeing to be on the “list,” you will receive real time updates about events, facilities, programs, news, changes, clubs – you name it – just about everything. If it’s going on, and it’s important to you, GVR will send you an email about it!

In addition, starting late this summer, you may participate in “snapshot” surveys and polls weighing in on what matters to you. Many people recently asked questions and made com-ments during seven “Conversations with Kent,” and now the rest of GVR will have an opportunity to share their thoughts about them, too. Things like “should GVR have a women’s only fitness center,” or “should there be an ‘adults only’ pool” will be among the many quick questionnaires possible. Not only will you have the opportunity to give your opinion, but also you will see instant results as soon as you have “voted.”

If you want to be “in the loop,” simply send your name, GVR number, and current email address to Bill Crossley, at [email protected] . If you don’t have email available, find a friend who does and share! You always will have the opportunity to “opt-out” if you no longer desire electronic correspondence from GVR.

What are you waiting for? Join the list today!

From left: Barry Young, Emily Bagley, Fred Wray, Richard Duncan, Ed Long and Ken Witte.

Please call the COA phone number if you need assistance with any problem. If it is an emergency – DIAL 9 1 1 If possible, use the courtesy telephones that are located in the meeting rooms at all sat-ellite centers and in various locations throughout GVR. These are “land lines.” With Pima County’s enhanced 911 system, the address of the fa-cility pops up on the dispatch-er’s screen. Center addresses also are posted at all GVR courtesy telephones as is the COA phone number.

“Safety first” is a primary consideration at GVR. Our COAs help make it so!

Attend a New Volunteer training Class June 18Looking for something fun to do this

summer? Now that snowbirds have flown the coup, we have a number of openings for pool and fitness center volunteers! It’s a great way to stay active and make new friends!

It is so easy with our new Flex Program (which allows volunteers to be “on duty” dur-ing their regular workouts, and for more than one volunteer to be on duty at the same time.) It is a fantastic solution for people who want to “give back,” but are too busy to commit to a specific schedule.

Volunteers have three basic duties: Hos-pitality, Identification and Safety. They are there to say “Hi, how are you? Do you need

any assistance?” Also, they make sure mem-bers, tenants and guests swipe their cards at attendance readers so we can keep an accu-rate count of users at our facility. Lastly, they look out for potential safety hazards and no-tify GVR staff if issues arise!

If you are interested in being a pool or fit-ness center volunteer, the first step is to attend a new volunteer training class.

This month’s class is scheduled for Wednes-day, June 18, 1 pm, at West Social Center, Room 2. Please register in advance at any open social center or contact the Member Ser-vices Supervisor, Maureen McCarthy, at 625-3440 x7224 or at [email protected] . Please reference CR #28786.

If you ever needed to call for emergency services at any GVR Center, would you know the address to tell 911 dis-patchers? Because they are in Tucson, dispatch likely would not know where you are even if you told them you are at the West Social Center or at Las Campanas.

To help you out, Pima Coun-ty has enhanced 911 services.

If you call 911 from a landline, dispatch will know exactly where you. GVR has courtesy landline telephones at every center just for this purpose. The address and contact phone numbers also are post-ed right above the phones. In addition, the phone number of GVR’s Center Operations Assistants (COAs) is right on the telephone, itself, should

you require assistance for any other reason.

Please feel free to use these courtesy phones to make other local calls. Courtesy telephones are located in the recreation rooms of all satel-lite centers, and at various lo-cations at the major centers. Keep an eye out for them – just in case you need to make a quick call in an emergency!

Volunteer Staff Coordinators Meeting June 11

We have openings for Volunteer Staff Coordinators (VSC) at a number of GVR pools. VSCs act as a liaison between the volunteers at their facilities and GVR’s Volunteer Liaison. It is lots of fun and not a lot of work! They help answer questions of those volunteers on a flex schedule. VSCs also keep volunteers up to date with all the latest information needed to help keep members safe while enjoying GVR facilities.

If you are interested in learning how much fun you can have and how simple it is, please attend the meeting on Wednes-day, June 11 at 9 am in the East Center Auditorium or contact Member Services Supervisor, Maureen McCarthy, at 625-3440 x7224 or at [email protected].

Participate in small group personal training this summer! Pictured above, certified personal trainers Vic Boylhart and Chris Bernardo assist GVR members Mary Wood and Raydine Taber.

Summer exercise groups continue through June giving GVR members the opportunity to work with personal train-ers at a fraction of the cost. These groups focus on specific issues with no more than 2 to 6 participants in each group.

Exercise can help deal with these issues and improve overall health and well-be-ing. By working in a small group, mem-bers have built-in support from other group members which hopefully will con-tinue long after the group sessions end!

Group members learn exercises that help them become stronger, improve balance, build bone density, improve memory, maintain independence, and recover from joint replacement, illness or injury. Working in a group is more fun and is an excellent opportunity to make new friends!

These are NOT GVR classes, but rath-

er are small group personal training. For information and to schedule participa-tion in this pilot program, please contact

Shelley Whitlatch, of Fitness Specialties, at 349-3037 or at [email protected] .

tRIPS ANd tOuRS6/25 Wednesday: Kitt Peak National Observatory Nighttime

Tour — Travel to Kitt Peak National Observatory, located at 7,000’ in the Quinlan Mountains, for this very special evening. We begin with a stop at their Visitor Center where we will examine the ex-hibits that describe this national observatory and other interesting topics. We enjoy a light meal and then an introduction to astrono-my and the night sky will be given by a docent. Next, we learn how to identify stars and the constellations. Once outdoors we will ex-plore the night skies and view them with high-powered binoculars. We then enter one of the domes to view through a telescope and observe the heavens in all of its grandeur. Come along and discover your universe. If you’ve never participated in one of the night-time Kitt Peak programs before you are in for a very pleasant surprise. Good walking shoes (closed toe), pants (not shorts) and a jacket are highly recommended. (In case of inclement weather we reserve the right to insert an alternate astronomy program presented by Kitt Peak). Fee for GVR members is $107 and bring a guest for $112. the Sugar thievesTuesday, June 17, 2014, 7pm, West Center

The Sugar Thieves were born in 2006, in a smoky dive bar in Tempe, Arizona. They began as a duo with Mikel Lander and Meridith Moore on guitar and vocals. By adding Jeff Naylor on upright bass, Shea Marshall on organ and sax and David Libman on drums, they have become one of the hardest work-ing bands around. Over the past seven years they have inde-pendently produced and released five albums, and have won the Phoenix Blues Society’s “Arizona State Blues Showdown” three times. In 2009, 2010 and 2013, The Sugar Thieves went on to compete in the International Blues Challenge in Mem-phis, were in 2009 they were voted on the top ten unsigned blues bands in the world, and won the “People’s Choice” award in 2010 and 2013. This five piece band is always on the move, sharing their music with new audiences. They are a per-fect mix of American music, with the sound of New Orleans, Memphis, Chicago and Mississippi. They fuse Blues, Roots, Folk, Gospel and a little Jazz, to make up one big bowl of Sug-ar. Their hometown of Phoenix, Arizona has dubbed them the “Meat Shakin’ Blues Band.” If you haven’t seen them yet, don’t wait. Green Valley SquaresAlthough attendance is somewhat lower in the summer,

GVR’s square and round dance club has a full schedule of ac-tivities. Rick Gittelman, our professional square dance caller, is splitting the large Canoa Hills ballroom with Bob and Lynn Van Atta to conduct workshops for our newer dancers every Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., so that they can hone their skills and maintain their interest in dancing until regular classes start next November. Each Monday from 7:30 to 9:30pm the caller and cuer are alternating with squares and rounds on one floor. The Van Attas also conduct beginning round dance workshops every Sunday, 1:00 p.m. at the same venue. Two-day-a-week be-ginning classes in square dance will start in November.

Square dancing is the familiar American folk dance of the do-si-do, grand-right-and-left variety. Round dancing is choreographed ballroom dance figures, with the cuer calling which figures are to be performed in sequence, so the choreography need not be mem-orized. The cuer writes some of the choreography and cues classic ballroom routines as well. You may watch and ask questions at any of the dances without charge at Canoa Hills any Monday. For an-swers to any questions, e-mail [email protected].

Green Valley Pickleball ClubOne of the biggest challenges in getting people to try playing

Pickleball may be the sport’s silly name. But once tried, usu-ally hooked! I could have been named “Whiffle Paddleball”. There’s a mouthful. Some say it was named after a dog called “Pickles”. Others say it was named after the “pickleboat” that was the last boat in races carrying extra oars etc. Who cares? This game is so much fun and can be enjoyed by people of all skill levels. You don’t have to play against the best players in Green Valley. You can learn to play with players of like ability. Check out our website http://www.greenvalleypickleball.org/. It has loads of information: court locations, teaching videos, court schedules, rules, championship matches on video, Calendar of Events, etc. Summer play usually begins at 7am and players come back again around 4:30pm to beat the heat.

Want to learn how to play Pickleball this summer? Come to Assisted Play this summer at Canoa Ranch – Tues/Thurs at 5pm. Coaches are on hand to help you with grip, position-ing and all the how-to(s) of the game. Paddles available at that time. Court shoes are required. Questions? - Paul May 648-2151 or Donna Coon 648-1007.

Shuffleboard Club We play round robin (3 games) every Thursday morning at

Casa Paloma II. Meet new people each week and enjoy the summer mornings. Although the game is easy to enjoy for be-ginners, it’s a challenge to master, requiring constant mental changes in tactics and strategy, a bit like chess. For start times call Lorraine at 838-0661 or John at 625-2226.

Free lessons are offered Thursday mornings at 8:30am at Casa Paloma II. Learn a relaxing game of shuffleboard with lots of fellowship during the summer months. Contact Lor-raine Acquaviva 838-0661 or John Tams 625-2226.

Our monthly calendar includes events throughout the month to help our members get to know each other and engage in their favorite pastimes with others who have like interests. Add Singles of GVR to your calendar and try us out. We are al-ways interested in new members and new pursuits. Our meet-ings are every Monday at the Desert Hills Social Center from 9:30 AM – noon. Green Valley Volleyball ClubAerobic exercise, friendly competition, and camaraderie

all come together at the Volleyball Club of Green Valley. With three venues to choose from and games six days of the week, volleyball players of Green Valley are never bored. Regular outdoor volleyball is played on a sand court three mornings a week at 8 am. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings it is at the East Center court. On Saturday mornings it is at Abrego South.

Wallyball (so named because the ball can be bounced off the walls) is played in the Las Campanas racquetball court. These games happen every weekday from 2 to 4pm and from 1 to 3pm on Saturdays. To participate court shoes are required (sneakers that are worn only indoors, so sand or dirt doesn’t scratch the floors).

Water volleyball is perhaps the most jovial of the three. A net is strung across and teams try hard to keep the ball from getting wet. Splashing around in the pool is a great way to stay cool as the temperature heats up outdoors. Any GVR member is welcome to try out one, or all three of the fun variations on the game of volleyball.

Wright-Patterson Mah Jongg ClubIf you’re looking for an inexpensive but enjoyable way to

spend an afternoon, this may be your answer. The Wright-Patterson Mah Jongg Club meets every Tuesday from 12:30pm to 3:30pm at the Las Campanas Recreation Center. The club encourages mixing of players by drawing for player tables just before 12:30. The club also welcomes observ-ers so you can determine if you’d like to learn this version of Mah Jongg. For further information, call Club President Judy Cunnyngham (625-9671), or Vice President/Instructor Lois Wilhelm (818-1600).

Your home is your most expensive single purchase. It contains virtually all your possessions and people you love. But others may have keys to it, including contractors, subcontractors, previous owners and renters and their friends and family, neighbors, care givers, housekeepers, and others.
