VIA DOLOROSO Lent is a penitential season of preparation for Easter which we have just concluded in

the month of April. During these forty days the Roman Catholic Church meditates and reflects upon the temptation, passion and suffering of Jesus Christ before he was crucified at Mount Calvary. Lot of people make many resolutions, observed fast and abstain from drinking alcohol, smoking and eating meat, but we lay more stress on the Via Doloroso (Sorrowful Way) or simply way of the cross The Way of the Cross is a devotion where every parishioner loves to walk during Lent because it reminds us about “GOD’S

LOVE.” For humanity.People who are fortunate enough must have visited the holy land, seen the place,

and taken part in the way of the cross, like our pilgrimage group did in the month of October 2008. In the beginning only one can see a big rectangular board on the wall where it is inscribed in bold letters” Via Doloroso.”. The Stations of the Cross follows the path of Christ from Pontius Pilate's praetorian to Christ tomb. After Roman Emperor Constantine legalised Christianity in the year 312, this pathway was marked with its important stations, the devotion continued to grow in popularity in the fifth century, and interest developed in the Church to “reproduce” the holy places in other areas so pilgrims who could not actually travel to the Holy Land could do so in a devotional, spiritual way

thin their hearts. At the end of the 17 . Century, the erection of station in churches became more popular and it was Pope Clement XII who permitted stations to be created in all churches and fixed the number at 14.To date there 14 traditional stations starting from Pilate condemns Christ to death till Jesus is laid in the tomb. When you are following this path, you can imagine during that time how rough this path was, and what Jesus must have suffered till he reached Mount Calvary. All over the world during the lent season more stress is laid on the way of the cross, and lot of people take part in these rituals'. This year we had the way of the cross with a difference, like the one you have in the holy land. Last year in May the way of the cross was enacted on our hill behind the church. And the person behind this project is our former Parish Priest Fr.Romualdo Robin Rodrigues and his Assistant Fr. Peter Simon Mascarenhas who were instrumental in completing the project in about forty five days including the renovation of the chapel and the construction of the statue of Christ the King. The artist who has done the artistic work is a famous Karnataka artist T. Somesh who has put on a lot of efforts to enact all the stations, with statues and has really done a good job . When I interacted with this person and asked him, why he took up this project , he told me though he is a Hindu he has lot of faith, and respect in Roman Catholic Religion, and his whole family do the same. He told me till date he has finished about thirty five projects like this one in Goa and Karnataka.In June Fr. Joao Santana de Cristo Rei Colaco took over as the Parish Priest and continued the development work and made the way of the cross path by levelling it with mud and constructing steps wherever needed, and made it more attractive by connecting all the station with electric supply including the Chapel and the Statue of Christ the King. It looks beautiful specially at night time and lot of tourists go to see it. If one wants to enjoy the beauty the best place is Nerul Bridge. It looks wonderful with the statue of Christ the King , and the renovated Chapel in the background makes one feel that you are watching the Christ the King statue in Rio de Janero in Brazil or the one in Lisboa in Portugal .This year all the seventeen wards participated in the way of the cross including youth and catechists, and also the parishioners from Nerul Church. And whoever participated in the way of the cross took part with devotion. Everyone including the parishioners walked, keeping in mind 'GOD’S LOVE' for Humanity. Let us all support our Parish Priest and take part in all the church activities in keeping up the good work they are doing for our church..
