2PRESENTATION

It was through the housing issues that archi-tecture began by exerting a motivation and a dominant force down to the final decision of a professional path. I expressed my early interest in “dwelling” when as a child I drew housing sketches and built LEGO cities that were usually across the floor of my bedroom, arousing me (consciously or unconsciously), a critical attitude over the man built environ-ment.Since the time of my parents “arts&crafts” little shop, art workshops and works exhibits from my high-school up to the decision of a university degree, art has always been a central theme for me. What made me follow an academic path was the desire to join a multidisciplinary project of new ideas and artistic contexts that would be able to fulfill me completely, but also be able to learn and do a little bit of everything. However, I soon discovered that there was no master degree in college that would allow me to study simultaneously all matters for which I had an interest on. I choose the most general of art forms: Architecture. I always saw an architect as a polymath. He built cathedrals; he painted magnificent paintings and even developed gadgets. Later, he learned how to design chairs, lamps, pens and, nowadays, they al-ready design handles, tea services, shoes, etc. I thought it was the perfect profession for me. I had finally found the opportunity to fulfill my dream of being closer to all Arts by being a polymath too.I finished my architecture degree full of desire and passion to make a difference. I studied seven years in the best university of architec-

ture in Portugal, and who knows, maybe one of the best in Europe and ultimately in the world, this was the same institution that saw the famous and awarded Architects Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto Moura.Everything seemed perfect: I was studding where the real architecture masters have stud-ied and would be knowledgeable of the arts, with excellent multi-tasking abilities, using the design methods and working platforms that the designer, journalist, photographer and engineer also use. Everything was aligned for me to be happy at a personal and profes-sional level. Nothing would be able to stop my motivation neither the desire to explore the materials, to create new images and spaces in which people identify themselves, remember-ing the classics and (re)using images of the past and giving them a new look, a more contemporary one. I started working in architecture business before I even finished my graduation degree. I was full of willingness to start my working life. I had the functions and responsibilities of an intern architect: applying the knowledge that the university taught us, with design skills and comfortable to communicate with own free-hand drawings, gaining a deep knowledge of construction methods and materials and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, design and project management team as well as the abil-ity to review, analyze, and make recommen-dations regarding designs, architectural plans and specifications. Most of all I was able to work in a multidisciplinary team environment in 2D and 3D.In the working life of architecture and, after

3PRESENTATION (cont.)

four years of professional level dedication, the arts, the multidisciplinary and the motivation wasn’t always present as I expected. In most cases, the right to a professional and artistic opinion didn’t even exist or even asked. It’s easier to wake up into the reality that we, the new architects, are merely technical design-ers, experts in the best way to make lines and polylines on a complex program of design. As part of my professional responsibilities I’ve worked as part of an multidisciplinary project management team (retail, hotel and restaurant design, education and social facili-ties and housing) ensuring all projects phases were delivered on time and within budget; I’ve worked closely with the offices to present outlined design concepts, design development and detailing, production, implementation and construction information. On the GSAA architectural office, I was able to manage outside consultants throughout all projects phases, to prepare and monitor fee propos-als and cost plans, managing schedules, budgets, project set up with vendors and contractors as well as preparing all supporting communications/reporting documentation for effective project management specially in the Portuguese coffee stores of the international branding Nespresso. In the meantime, I’ve design two single houses by myself for distinct families in Lobito, Angola that is currently under construction. Now, and for the first time in my life, I’m currently looking for an office abroad where I can develop my motivation and passion for architecture as well as develop an interna-tional career.I want to grab new opportunities within the

“know-how” of arts and the willingness that I always had by great ideas, design and of course, architecture and space. Is there anything better than the space to provoke us sensations, even if those sensations are invis-ible to our distracted eyes? The architecture is interconnected with everything that surrounds us, and above all is intimately linked with people. And it’s for the people and for their comfort, from the beauty surrounding us to the most practical issues of our daily life, that’s how any artist work is driven.Being a young architect, I need more than the motivation to accomplish any professional project or purpose, I also need new op-portunities. Does an architect have to be just a technical designer? Are the creative issues only within reach of the great masters and lobbies? What about young ideas? Isn’t the architect, the polymath, able to write a journal column, organize events and work in an art gallery, designing a sofa or theater scenario, to provoke and launch new ideas and ways to communicate? Is nowadays being an architect just an architectural status according to a classical perspective that is only meant to be displayed on a shelf? What is an Architect to-day? These issues are what I am trying to find out throughout my professional career, since in theory I already learned how to do it.

FAMILY HOUSE FLIGHT OF BIRDS, AZORES, PT

FLIGHT OF BIRDS FAMILY HOUSE

The house is located in the north side of S. Michael Island in the Azores. Since the microclimate of this farmland offers frequent wind and showers, the first design strategy was to block these winds with a wall, and offer diverse patios and covered courtyards to protect against rain. These patios and courtyards also open all living spaces to the natural green by glass walls, which receded from the exterior. On the upper-floor, there are private rooms that are more enclosed and

RESIDENTIALprotected. The typology follows an almost classical Palladian and Scamozzi central plan design, with double height on living room, and then two lateral wings enclos-ing one the kitchen. The house also uses the high chimneys from popular residential architecture, a covered interior patio, and the other wing has the circulations for the first floor and to the roof terrace. These two wings end with light entrances from the south. The roof offers a wonderful view of all of the island’s north shore.

SITE PLAN

APARTMENTS TYPE PLAN

The urban strategy is located in one of the city entrances and parallel to the avenue Sidónio Pais that leads to Boavista centre. The strategy proposal is based on different paths, squares and green belts. The urban concept is based on a fusion between the green areas and the residential, public services and office building development. There are six collective housing buildings, three of them as high-rise buildings and the other three as gallery building system. The new street designed in the urban net allows the connection between the surrounding streets, defining a new commercial street front linked with the collective housing and public services and office/residential tower building. The tower marks the city entrance from the Avenue Sidónio Pais to Boavista’s roundabout

CASA BRANCA HOTEL

The hotel is located between the mouth of the River Douro and the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean allowing a beautiful panoramic view. This urban and privileged localization aims to a new urban strategy that will allow the Hotel to become an attractive and touristic spot. The project was designed for two different building blocks: an old building, already working as a Hotel but needing a strong

refurbishment, and a new building that would allow accommodating more guests. The horizontal design of the new building block, parallel to the coastline, will allow a more direct inner and outer relationship with the sea, landscape and bedrooms. The floor plans of the new block appear misaligned approaching the connection to the preexisting building. The refurbishment design for the old building is the same as the new one allowing a more uniform image to the unit.

21 The idea of the project came from the constraints defined by the preliminary program of cultural content and the pre-existing building to recover, representative property in cultural and heritage history of the city, but that was in a high state of deterioration. This way, and having as intervention principle the heritage value of the existing building, the intervention focused on the recovery key issues such as facades, load-bearing walls, noble living and stairs to floor 1.The new equipment includes, in addition to a music school, a center of documentation and dissemination of popular and interventation music, an area linked to fine arts with workshops and exhibitions gallery, the municipal house of youth, a bar/restaurant and several areas for meetings, recording and testing studios. The great flexibility of the project make it possible to follow the progress of cultural practices, programs and build-ing management.

23 The site plan is built on two diferente urban structures that dissolve in one thought a compact and consolidated urban block mesh turn on to the Atlantic Ocean. The north of the city, Espinho, is based on a more recent urban structure with a médium scale building construction of a public character of services and new residential buildings. Although in the same principle of the urban block mesh, the south of the city doesn’t present the same coherency. Specially based on residential dwellings of one or two floor (fishing houses) and for a lower scale church, the site plan, where the project is located, has it strenght only on the waterfront by its physical and natural qualities. The building was designed as a whole closed foursquare volume by establishing the connection with the outside world through a central courtyard, which organizes the whole program, and by specific openings throughout the building. The program and the building itself live within its walls and just opens outwards more directly in the form of small volumes that extend themselfs beyond the massive monolith building. These small volumes allow surrounding oriented observation views as well as entrance and exits of the building. The architectural object acquires a more homogeneous language when surrounded by a mass of white reinforced concrete allowing a dual game between closed and opened contexts, but at the same time protected.Above all, it is intended to compress various spatial features in a single image in a single system.
