Dear Colleague:
Our 2012 Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC) is quickly
approaching, and I hope that you are planning to join us in Atlanta,
GA for this signature event! The AMEC has emerged as a
cornerstone activity for the SNMA and the medical community; an
event in which both students and professionals have gathered with
enthusiasm to attend a wide range of educational and networking
events.
Entitled, “Champions of Change: Improving our Potential, Enhancing our Performance”, the
2012 AMEC theme embraces SNMA's mission to support the educational and professional
pursuits of current and future underrepresented minority medical students, training
clinically excellent, culturally competent, and socially conscious physicians.
We encourage you to get the full AMEC experience in Atlanta by arriving on the evening of
Wednesday, April 4th. Our educational sessions will begin at 9:00 am on Thursday morning,
April 5th, followed by our exciting Opening & Awards Ceremony at 12:00 pm.
The educational sessions featured at this year’s conference are at the core of the AMEC
Experience, and will feature the most inspiring and enriching information that medical and
premedical students of all years will appreciate. Riveting speakers are preparing to present
a wide range of workshops over six unique workshop tracks. Throughout the conference,
you will have the chance to hear from and engage some of the brightest minds in healthcare
as we prepare SNMA members to truly become Champions of Change.

AMEC OVERVIEW
ABOUT THE 2012 CONFERENCE
The SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC) has emerged as a cornerstone activity for the SNMA. This is truly an event in which both students and professionals gather with enthusiasm to attend a wide range of enriching educational and networking events. The theme of this year’s conference is Champions of Change: Improving our Potential, Enhancing our Performance. In alignment with National President Michael G. Knight’s initiatives, this year’s event will focus on solidifying the future of the SNMA, engaging our members, and empowering the communities that we serve. To that end, we hope that this year’s national conference will provide a wealth of resources and knowledge that will secure the mission of SNMA, and inspire our nation’s future physicians of color to truly become Champions of Change. WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The 2012 Annual Medical Education Conference is planned as the premier educational, networking, and professional development event for current and future medical students, residents, practicing physicians, and pre-medical advisors— particularly those groups traditionally underrepresented in medicine or committed to addressing the needs of underserved communities.
FORMAT
Educational sessions begin on Thursday morning, and continue on Friday and Saturday of AMEC featuring seminars, panels, and “hands on” activities to support and prepare medical and premedical students for the next steps in their careers in medicine. Engaging speakers from leading institutions, national leaders, physician experts, and residents and students will bring to AMEC the most important information of 2012. HIGHLIGHTS

Opening & Awards Ceremony - 12:00 – 1:00 PM
Witness this exciting event as we open the Annual Medical Education Conference with fanfare and festivity. The ceremonial opening includes welcomes from area government and institutions, special guest Dr. David Satcher, as well as awards for outstanding achievement and our inaugural Diversity in Medicine awards. President’s Luncheon - 12:00 – 2:00 PM
The annual President’s Luncheon is a forum in which the SNMA highlights its programmatic achievements for the year. Presidential and Community Service awards are presented to outstanding individuals and chapters of the SNMA. The Luncheon also involves the installment of the incoming National President.

Pre-Medical Forum Luncheon - 12:00 – 2:00 PM
The annual Pre-medical Forum Luncheon is exclusively for pre-medical students, and serves as an opportunity to provide mentoring to students from around the country. The luncheon keynote speaker, Dr. Morris-Priester, will offer inspiring words to encourage undergraduate students in their pursuit of medicine.
SNMA Greater Than AIDS Plenary Session - 12:00 – 2:00 PM
In continuation of our historic SNMA>AIDS campaign, Greater Than AIDS will be hosting a Plenary Session featuring an engaging keynote speaker and a panel of persons and healthcare providers who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. The session will highlight how all aspiring physicians can truly be Greater Than AIDS.
SNMA Commencement Ceremony - 6:30 – 7:00 PM
This annual event is a highly anticipated ceremony that recognizes and honors our graduating SNMA medical students and newest emerging physicians. Come watch the Class of 2012 get ushered into their careers in medicine.
Board of Directors Banquet - 7:00 – 10:00 PM
The culminating event of our conference, the BOD Banquet celebrates a year of organizational accomplishments, features keynote speaker State Rep. Stacey Abrams, and serves as a forum for recognizing outstanding contributions.

EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS General Session Track
This series of workshops is designed for all AMEC attendees. Featuring a wide range of topics from Health Policy to Community Health, there is something of interest for every AMEC attendee in this workshop track.
Medical Student Track
This workshop track is designed for our medical student attendees. With workshops focused on academic enrichment, board exam preparation, and topics of interest to medical students, this series of workshops is a vital component of the medical student’s AMEC experience.
Pre-Medical Forum Track
This program of events is designed for our pre-medical student attendees. The Forum features workshops on medical school application tips, MCAT preparation, and healthcare topics of interest for pre-medical students.
Physician Researcher Initiative Track
This workshop track is designed for our pre-medical and medical student attendees with an interest in biomedical research and Academic medicine. This program, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, is designed to engage the physician investigators of tomorrow.
4th Year and Beyond Track
This group of seminars is designed for our third and fourth year medical students, as well as resident and young physician attendees. Featured workshops cover a range of topics including residency tips, a resident panel, and an inspirational keynote presentation.
Pre-Medical Advisor Track
This series of workshops is designed for pre-medical advisors. This new addition to our AMEC program features seminars designed to help advisors prepare the most stellar medical school applicants at their respective institutions.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Thursday, April 5th, 2012
Bone Marrow Donor Drive

In collaboration with the National Marrow Donor Program, and in support of the SNMA’s Tissue and Organ Donation Education and Recruitment (TODER) protocol, a bone marrow donor drive will be held on-site at the conference hotel. With the ongoing shortage of minority marrow donors, this will serve as an opportunity for every attendee to join the registry.

Our onsite blood drive, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, will allow for interested attendees to donate life saving blood products to aid in the prevention of regular blood shortages in the local area.
HIV Testing

During the AMEC, HIV testing will be available to all attendees. As we encourage our community to get tested through our SNMA Greater Than AIDS campaign, our members must also take the step to know their own HIV status.

Youth Mentoring Initiative

In line with this year’s Pipeline Initiative, we will host a half-day pipeline program for elementary and high-school aged youth in collaboration with the local Boys & Girls Club. This program will include education on healthy living and making positive choices.
IMPACT: Atlanta

This community program will consist of a health awareness event in downtown Atlanta promoting healthy lifestyles. We aim to highlight health topics including violence prevention, STD awareness and testing, smoking cessation, obesity awareness and prevention, and mental health with information to be distributed to members of the local community.

EXHIBIT HALL The SNMA conducts two exhibit halls, one for medical students and professionals, called Professional Exhibits, and one referred to as the Pre-medical Forum Recruitment Fair, which is designed for pre-medical students attending the conference. This year’s AMEC features extended hours for both halls and an exhibit hall theater, providing additional time for our attendees to learn about the numerous programs represented in our exhibit hall.

This year’s entertainment showcase will feature the talents of SNMA members who will compete for cash prizes. Hosted by a local comedian, and featuring a live a band and an intermission step-show performance by local Greek organizations, this event will have something for everyone to enjoy.
The Pre-Med Social

A welcome late night alternative, the Pre-Med Social provides an exciting atmosphere where attendees can meet new people, enjoy music, and show their competitive edge in the ultimate night of games and enjoyment. Activities range from an enjoyable take on popular card and board games, interactive games like Twister and Taboo, and an exciting version of old favorites such as musical chairs and Simon says. This will be nothing like your average game-night!

Celebrating the achievements of leaders who have paved the way for our generation, the musical tribute will feature a celebrity host and various recording artists and local musical performers. Following the culminating event of AMEC, the Board of Directors Banquet, the festivities will continue at the banquet after party. At this late night event, reminiscent of a medical school formal, attendees will enjoy the hits spun by a top Atlanta DJ, and take over the dance floor in style.

SNMA BUSINESS SESSIONS The Annual Medical Education Conference also serves as the annual business meeting for the SNMA. During the Board of Directors meetings, SNMA officers discuss the business of the organization before it is turned over to the House of Delegates for review and approval. Each Region holds their Regional meeting during the AMEC, and Regional and National elections also take place. Finally, important transition meetings are held for incoming chapter, regional, and national officers.
