Simple Ways toSpread Kindness
“No act of kindness, no matter howsmall, is ever wasted,” wrote theancient Greek storyteller Aesop.Random Acts of Kindness Week, thesecond full week in February, wascreated to encourage thoughtfulgestures toward others. Here are a fewideas to spread joy:
Do you enjoy writing letters? Penthank-you notes for local police and firedepartments or those serving in themilitary. Make cards for patients at achildren’s or veterans hospital as acheerful surprise.
Do you like getting compliments?Everyone does, so make a point to saysomething positive to people youencounter. Wish passersby a goodmorning or tell someone you like theiroutfit. Praise a server, nurse or aide forthe work they do. A smile and a fewkind words can brighten a person’s day.
Do you like connecting with youngergenerations? Get involved with a daycare, school or youth organization andread to the youngsters, share storiesabout your life or teach them a gameor skill.
Do animals hold a special place inyour heart? Buy or make treats for afriend or family member’s pet, or collectand donate food, blankets and toys toan animal shelter.

Quotes and Tips for 2017Quiet people have the loudest minds.
Never have more children than you have car windows. These mountains that you are carrying, you were only supposed to climb.Just be yourself. Let people see the real, imperfect, flawed, quirky, weird,
beautiful, and magical person that you are.Know that your kindness has a ripple effect in the universe.
Don’t stop until you’re proud.Your speed doesn’t matter. Forward is forward.
Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations.Every act of kindness grows the spirit and strengthens the soul.
Change the world by doing one act of random kindness at a time.Stay in touch. Volunteer. Get more sleep. Travel.

The Heart and SoulAs I talk with our residents, I often
hear about our wonderful andcompetent staff, the great
programming and services, and howmuch they enjoy living at Cedarlake.
One very important focus for ourleadership team in 2017 is to improve
our communication, support, andrecognition with our front-line staff. They really are the “Heart and Soul”of our community and they are the
ones providing the great support andservices you receive every day.
One of our new initiatives we startedin January, is our monthly “All Staff
Meeting” in which we get together todo training, update staff on what’shappening, and provide time for
questions and feedback. In addition,we’ve started a new “Employee of
the Month Program” to providerecognition for our outstanding staff. We want to honor our staff that go“above and beyond” in providinggreat services for our residents. We’re also rolling out a “Wall of
Fame” area to provide informationand recognition for our staff -
including pictures of new staff andour employee of the month.
I’m sure you would agree ouradditional investment of time,
communication, and recognition ofour employees is a very worthwhile
endeavor for our community. Please let us know when one of our
staff does something“extraordinary” and brings a smileto your face. As always, blessings
to all of you!Mark Miron, Executive Director
Talk About It: Love StoriesUse this discussion topic to reminisce about your past. Talk with your friends
about your memories and learn how everyone’s experiences were similaror different.
• Do you have a spectacular real-life love story to share?• What are your favorite love stories from television, movies, theater
and books?• Many classic love stories, such as the films “Roman Holiday” and
“Casablanca” do not end with the couple together. Do your favoriteromance stories end this way, or do you prefer a happy ending together?
• Are you or have you been married? Was the proposal especiallymemorable?

John Dominis was born and raised in New York City. After graduating fromhigh school he went on to study at Cooper Union Evening School ofEngineering. John worked and attended classes from 1948- 1957 to earn hisdegree in Chemical Engineering. During the years 1952 to 1954, he served inthe Army and was stationed in Georgia, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Texas.John received his Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from BrooklynPolytechnic in 1963. This same year he met Nancy, his wife, in Philadelphia.John has three sons, two of whom were born in Holland and one son bornstateside. His career in process design of chemical plants and refineries tookhim all over Europe and the United States. One of their favorite places to livewas Amsterdam because it was old and quaint. John enjoys reading Romanperiod historical books as well as mysteries. A hobby he enjoys is mosaicmaking. John also used to be a translator for Bosnian refugees in Memphis, TN,around 2000-2005. John and Nancy would sometimes take in Croatian andBosnian children with heart issues, as well as their families. This was as Johnstated, his calling, because of his ability to translate. However, it definitely cameback to John and became a heartfelt return, being able to go to the hospital andhold the mothers’ hands and to wait with them as their children’s surgeries tookplace. He appreciates the kindness of all the American families from his parishthat were able to help in this area of need. He has lived at Cedarlake for 2 yearsand loves how friendly the people are and the good food. John’s words ofwisdom that he would like to leave off with is “take it as it comes.”
