Hello everyone,As some of you know we have had a rough month, John has been in the hospital for a while now. So as you look through the pages of this month’s magazine you will notice there are more articles than rides. Next month will be back to featuring four “It’s my rides”, the show and of course the feature.

Thought we would take a moment to allow some individuals to speak about the changes regarding the NSRA and the ASRA. We here at Motorhead take seriously your concerns, comments, and suggestions, although we will always stay neutral, we feel the frustrations of both views.

Our goal at Motorhead is to support the hobby, the love of the rides, and bring them to life in the pages of our magazine. So one day our children and grandchildren have the enjoyment of seeing what we “use” to do and so they have the same opportunity, to get behind the wheel, under the hood, get their hands dirty and show the pride we all have for our rides.

No matter the year of your ride......we LOVE them....no matter the condition....we LOVE them... Each ride holds something spectacular.

The stories we have heard over this past year about your rides makes what we are doing worth every moment. Getting know the individuals behind the rides is priceless.

Please don’t let the changes, in a club, hard feelings, or disagreements change your love of our hobby. I would like everyone to be able to say, that we can agree....to disagree....Just as some of us like to race down a track and some of us like to trailer our prize possession....we all have different reasons for having, restoring, spending countless hours and cash on our rides. So we all have different views on what is what and who is who...

I hope to see you at the Early Ford Show, let’s break open the season on a good note, shine up those rides.....I headed out with camera in hand.....looking for all the changes that have occurred over the winter.

Another great show! We have had a wonderful time getting to know the people both behind the event and those of you that display your products. Each time we go we make new friends. This year we had the opportunity to stop by and chat with Vic Edelbrock and Rick Moroso. We also ran across a father and son team that assisted in the build on the Snap-On Glomad, and ran into a few of our cruisin friends from home.

This event is so diverse, both children and adults can find something they enjoy seeing.

The crew at Winner’s Circle put a lot of time into planning, I would venture to say they have already began on next year’s event.

Words from friends and family...

Although I had very little time to get to know Rolly, personally, I enjoyed every moment of our time together. Rolly was such an easy person to walk up and discuss his rides with. In sitting a chatting with Rolly and Edie regarding his rides, I immediately knew that his love of the ride was something he lived throughout most of his life (from the first moment behind the wheel). The last time I spoke with Rolly he asked me if I had enough photos of his cars to fill the magazine.... Unfortunately to the best of my knowledge he did not enjoy the pages of magazine that displayed his rides for all to see. I am sure he is looking down from his home with our Heavenly Father saying, “That’s My Ride”. To friends and family we at Motorhead would like to say, “We miss Rolly, and share in fond memories, our prayers are with you”.

Friend: “His presence will be greatly missed”

Friend: “I remember doing pin stripping on his car, he was a real cool guy to get to know”

Family: We miss him and remember fun times riding in the cars, just spending time with him. Friend: I offered, as a long time friend, to share some stories about Rolly... Rolly Jordan was a courageous cheerleader and a great supporter of our old car hobby. Courageous because he refused to let failing health interfere with his enjoyment of life, a cheerleader because he saw and encouraged the best in his friends, a great supporter of the hobby by his participation and enthusiastic appreciation of the “other guy’s ride.” I first met Rolly about 1978 when he came to me looking for help to finish the restoration of his Model A. To meet Rolly is to acquire a new friend. That car and that friendship is still in excellent condition. We have spent many hours over the years maintaining and upgrading that old Ford and strengthening that friendship. Our last project was to fit both Rolly’s cars with hitches so he could pull a small trailer containing his oxygen equipment. When we rebuilt Rolly’s Model a back in the 70’s the accessory trunk was in poor condition. Rolly asked if I could make it look like anything. I ventured that I could make it look like “something.” It was a running joke for years that I never said it would look like a trunk, only that it would look like “something.” Rolly was always big on accessories as evidenced by both his cars. In addition to those “geegaws” which show, Rolly’s Model A has 5 horns! He was an expert with the variable tone, moo cow horn. In 1982 I designed the equipment to manufacture accessory “Headlight Visors.” As usual Rolly was a strong supporter and encouraged me to hire a professional advertising agency to launch the product. Rolly’s Model A still displays the first set of production visors. Rolly and Edie enjoyed the Model A tours. A few years ago Rolly and Edie organized the Route 66 tour to Springfield. The Model A club enjoys the back roads and the adventure of stopping at unusual shops and attractions. Their tour was one of the best, it took us 8 hours to cover the 65 miles to Springfield.

Friend: I recall spending many hours working on both of Rolly’s cars, before and after the Model A fire, he is like family to me and I will miss him very much.

Friend: When the roads were dry, and he was feeling strong enough to get behind the wheel, he was in the Chevy, no matter the temperature outside.

When you drive into a car show or cruise in this season, take a moment to remember those we have lost over the winter, and enjoy the day as if they were sitting beside us.......

Patrick Faley’s 1967 Plymouth

Wow, now this is a garage find! Pat says he spoke to the previous owner on the phone, he was told if he had a trailer he could have it! This 1967 Barracuda is Black Cherry in color, white interior, a auto tranny 727 and a newly major overhauled motor, stroked out at 350, 408 horse. Pat has owned this beauty since 2000, it he is the third owner; first was a teenager that went into service and dad sold it, the second owner drove it a couple of times then garaged it for 10 years. Having been a rust bucket, Pat wasn’t sure if he wanted to tackle it, but he loves it now. Mopar Magazine affectionately labeled it a “Rescued Fish” it their feature.

Motorhead met Pat to shoot this beauty late in the fall, overlooking the Illinois River.The roar of a Cuda well overpowered the roar of the River.

Take a look when you see this beauty at a show it’s memorizing. Thanks Pat!

Well it is that time, Early Ford V8 Nostalgic Invitational Show is here! I am so excited to be back out enjoying your vehicles. My camera is getting dusty. Thought we would slip in some of last years photos, in remembrance of our the first event we covered for the magazine.Hope to see all of you there....make sure to say hi and tell me about the changes you have made to your rides.


Steve Catton of Princeville owns this 1948 Ford Anglia. I have spoke to several individuals that know Steve, but none of us seem to have his phone number. HA!

So, we are featuring a car I have little information on but, it intrigues me. As far as I know this is the only 48 Anglia in the area. It has a perfect green

paint job on the exterior that grabs your attention immediately. Inside they have carried the green onto the upholstery, to compliment the white interior. Steve loving calls his ride “The Pickle”, and dubs it an “Old Guy’s Street Rod”. Well Steve, I can tell ya you sure have a beautiful ride that is sure to please any enthusiast. Look for “The Pickle” at the shows and cruise ins and say hi to Steve, he’s a heck of a guy!

Now that I have your attention. I am talking about all the different types of styles and tastes in our hobby/lifestyle. Recently there has been a lot of bickering and arguing over the NSRAs decision to allow my 1980 Chevy Citation into the Louisville NSRA Nationals. It seems that NSRA has decided to have a rolling 30 year cutoff in what has been a strict pre 1949 event since its birth right here in Peoria, IL. While I personally do not have a problem with this rolling year process, I do think that it should have been implemented slowly and started off like the Goodguys events. I am a car guy and do enjoy just about any car that has been modified in some way. My better half is a purist and thinks everything should stay the way it came from the factory. She got upset when I put an aftermarket fuel pump on her 1962 VW Beetle and made me purchase a rebuild kit to rebuild her original VW fuel pump. See, that is crazy. I want to chop her little bug up into a million pieces and make something cool out of it and still yet there are people that think those little Kraut wagons are nothing but Hitlers revenge on Americans and absolutely hate these little round cars. So while some people like Streetrods and others like Lowriders ,I think we have lost the fact that it is a love affair with the automobile and a way to communicate with like individuals. Even though I am a Streetrod guy I belong to a Traditional Hotrod/Ratrod club and I get teased over perfect gaps and shiny paint. At the end of the day we all sit around in somebody’s shop and a few of us will tip a cold brewski and let the bench racing begin. To me THAT is what this hobby is about. Hanging out and having a good time while being surrounded by cars. I can go to a Sport Compact Car show and have just as much fun watching these plastic clad Tuners cars with their coffee can sized exhaust pipes as I would at a Goodguys event. I have even been known to show up at a local mud bog and laugh at the guys with their jacked up 4x4s blasting through the mud while country music blares out of their cabs. It is plain to me that I have a sickness that involves anything with an engine and wheels. I love this hobby and its combustion engines. I love the roar of an exhaust and the squeal of the tires and to me it doesn’t matter if it’s a brand new Nissan 350z with a supercharger and sitting on 19” three piece Volk wheels or a pro street 19701/2 Camaro with a twin turbo LS7. There are great organizations out there that are solely here to protect our hobby/lifestyle so that we can freely form our own opinions. SEMA is one of the largest organizations and they are a watchdog against the Government. If the Government could have its way we would all be riding little electric econo boxes that would be all white and we wouldn’t be able to modify them in anyway. A perfect example of hotrodding harmony would be the Taco Tuesday gang . They meet every Tuesday around noon (11:15 if you want to sit at the main table) at Kerrigans on Rt116. I have been going there for lunch for the last 4 years. What I like about this group of guys is that they are all car guys. There has never been any animosity between any of these guys except for the years old Ford versus Chevy banter and there has never been any “my car is better than your car” crap. I have learned a ton from these guys and have often wished I would record the table conversations as it would make a great book . The stories that are passed around are great. They range from old street races in the late 1950s to the latest barn finds and rare speed parts. These guys are passionate about their hobby/lifestyle and love cars and yes some of them are upset over the recent changes in the NSRA. Some are even boycotting the Nationals after attending every single Nationals since the first one. While I agree that the NSRA went to new with their rolling 30 years, I do think that this would be a way for the younger generation to meet some of these guys and see what this hobby is all about. We may never know the real reason why the NSRA did this, but lets not forget at one time that 1929 Model xyz sedan was a brand new car and the horsedrawn buggy guys didnt like the xyz guys. Locally, lets not let the bickering between what is a Hotrod and what is a new generation Tuner put a division between us a car guys and car gals and lets have a blast this summer at the local cruise ins and car shows. After our long weekend we felt the need to just get out and see the sights of some show pieces and have a little fun. James, (pictured below) sorry but the rest of us (except Derrick) have been featured in the magazine....so we picked on you a little...welcome to the Motorhead family....look out Derrick....your next. Ha!

Volo is such a family oriented, laid back place to go. Very inexpensive to take a the entire family. Not too far of a drive, you could leave in the morning and be back late in the evening. Plus you get to see things you will never see at a car show or cruise in.

Take a look at the giant roller skate (my favorite) you drive from the very top....yes...I said drive! It has exhaust hanging out the side, this thing must be 15 feet tall. I guess they climb the shoe laces to get in....hmmmm reminds me of “Old Mother Hubbard”.

Greg Dirks’ 1923 Ford T-Bucket

Hi my name is Brandon Fahner and my love for this 1970 C-10 started when I was 14 years old. My Dad picked the truck up for me as a gift on his way down south to Georgia. At the age of 16 I took the truck to my first drag races in Havana. In 1992 I started to tear the truck apart to repaint. After 2 house moves, wife and kids I finally got it nearly finished in 2009. My brother and I installed a Hot Rods to Hell rear end kit. It has a 12 bolt rear end with a 3.73 gear and Detroit locker. I put in a 355 small block with a Richmond 5 speed transmission. I then relocated the fuel tank under the bed. I chose the Patriot Blue paint, which was done by Performance Associates. It turned out beautiful. The interior is being done by Craig Look at Looks Upholstery. All in all the truck became a great family project. Now after all these years, my own kids have their memories of restoring this old truck too. My plan with the truck is to go to the cruise ins with my family and friends. Of course, I have to take it back to the drag strip with my kids so they’ll think Good ol’ Dad is cool.


Congratulations , it is beginning to warm up and the activity surrounding the hobby of transportation is on the rise. Some of us are pulling back the car covers on our prized vehicles while others are just finishing up the winter project. Then there are the others that have finally made the plunge and have decided to restore that rusty classic that has been occupying a space in your yard or garage. You probably spent all winter huddled up in a snuggy ,hunkered over the warm glow from your computer screen searching for ideas and dreaming of the day when you will be able to drive your freshly built vehicle. Well here are a few tips that you might find handy.

1. Gameplan. You will have to have an idea on what level you are wanting to take your vehicle to. Will it be a hotrod with suede paint and gobs of chrome and an engine and exhaust that demands attention when you drive down the Boulevard ? Will it be a Concourse de Elegance restoration with every nut and bolt properly placed and meticulously cleaned? Will it be a driver that you can load the family in and cruise to the local cruise in? These are questions you will have asked yourself and your bank account. You will also have to ask yourself what can I do and what will I have to have hired done? There is no shame in having a reputable shop build your dream as you will get just as much pleasure in owning and caretaking of your dream machine. If you are multi talented and can work on ever aspect of your vehicle then lets roll up them sleeves and begin working.

2. Disassembly Take your project to the car wash and plan on getting wet. Degrease every square inch of your project as it is going to be getting torn apart and the less grease and grit, the easier it is to disassemble.

Now that your project is safe inside your shop, put her up in the air. Some will have the ultimate shop and will have a car lift, while the rest of us will have to handjack the car and place her on jackstands. Take care when doing this and make sure it is a very stable platform before going underneath your car.

Pictures, pictures and more pictures. In this modern day of the digital camera it is a lot more affordable to document ever step of your car building process. If you are restoring your vehicle then you will want to take pictures of the factory routing and

markings on all of the hoses ,wiring and cables. Some vehicles are so obscure that you will not be able to find a build manual,

so it is vital that you take as many pictures as possible. As I disassemble a vehicle I like to work in sections. I usually start in the front and work back ,as I go along I place each group screws, washers, nuts and bolts in a little container or baggie and write on the baggie what they came off of and where they came off of. This is important if you are restoring the car as it will be apart for a longtime. Some people are gifted with a photographic memory and I am not one of those people, so I have to document every process. Documentation in restorations are also very important as they are a reference to go back to if a question of originality is ever asked. If you are building a hotrod/street rod then you will probably be using new hardware, chassis, drive train and interior so this is not as important.

3. Preparation of Parts So we have finally have our project completely disassembled and the results look like a small nuclear explosion happened in your garage. Now is the time to call your favorite blasting shop to have all the metal pieces stripped of their original paint and probably some rust as we live in the Midwest Rust Belt.All of the chrome pieces will have to be boxed up and sent off to the chrome shop and engine and drive train is off to be refurbished. Now we sit down with our trusty notepad as we have been taking notes all along of the parts and pieces we will need to be purchasing. This can also be a very challenging time as there are a lot of inferior parts being flooded into our country. This can be a good thing if you are on a tight budget but it is a bad thing if you are building a Concourse car. Cheap prices do not always mean quality parts so be careful in what you purchase as you don’t want to be changing parts after your vehicle is finished. Take the time, and it does take a lot of time ,and call the parts stores and ask them about return policy if the part is not up to your standards or if there is a failure of the part. Find out if there is a warranty and where the manufacturer of the parts is from. Now while the quality of Chinese products are on the rise, there is still some question of the quality of their parts, so buyer beware.

Derustation and It’s Frustration


4.Eliminating the destruction of iron oxide Rust is a terrible thing to eliminate and unfortunately we do not live in a paradise of 78 degree weather everyday. I like to prep the chassis and send it off to the powder coater as it will totally seal off any chance of old man winter and his evil step sister, salty roads from destroying your vehicle. If you have rust pits that have been blasted clean by your blasting shop then use some Lab Metal to fill and sand those areas smooth. Lab Metal is an aircured powdered metal that is sandable and is hard as metal when it has cured. This can be powder coated over and has a melt point of 1000 degrees.

Sheetmetal patches can be formed and some can be purchased already formed to fix that rusty area you just cut out. Remember to test fit before you cut and to leave a little room to butt weld your panels so they can be finished on both sides of the panel. I have seen where people have just laid the sheet metal patch over or under the panel and tack welded the panel with an overlap. This will cause problems down the road as it will allow moisture to collect and eventually rust out or leave the tell tale line of the panel replacement showing through the shiny paint. The process and the eventual the bodywork process is too long to explain in detail on a short format. Maybe we will run a series if there is an interest in doing so.

If you are going to hire a body shop to do all of the sheet metal repair and paint work the you will once again have to do some research. You will want to know what type of materials are they using? You don’t want cheap materials that have no UV protection as your labor of love will be in the sunlight on a hot summer day. You don’t want somebody that will just slap bondo/body mud right over rusty pinholes or sheetmetal damage. Check to see what kind of work do they do. Some shops concentrate on collision damage while other will take on restoration projects as filler work for when the shop is slow. There also shops that only do Restoration and custom work, so you once again have to know what your timeline is and what your budget is going to be able to afford.

ASK QUESTIONS if the shop owner/manager gets upset because you are asking too many questions then you do not want to leave your prized possession at their shop.

5.Upholstery Once again it is like the Bodyshop experience and the same questions and research apply here. If you are going for an award winning restoration or high end hotrod then you will want to see if their shop has won any prestigious national awards. Remember that the more known and recognized shop then the more $ and usually a lot higher quality of workmanship.

6. Final Assembly It has been a painstaking process and very rewarding as you finally have your beauty back in the shop and she is gleaming with the shine of brand new paint. Use a ton of caution as you don’t want to scratch or dent this newly straightened and gleaming skin. There a bunch of ways to protect your car as you assemble it. Most important don’t get in a hurry and if you get frustrated, then walk away for a minute or work on another part. If you get impatient or upset you will unintentionally damage your vehicle. Modular Oil Fillers by PRWThese uniquely designed modular fillers may be installed in nearly any valve cover configuration without the need to weld in place. This design allows the installer to select the most desirable location for their particular application. Once identified, the bore hole is drilled and the bung is installed with a threaded retaining ring held in place with a “set” screw.
