Welcome to March!

As everyone is looking forward to the arrival of warmer weather and sunny days, we also have to prepare for the rainy days ahead. I hope that we will not have the heavy rain events that occurred last year.

Do you know our local rainfall rate in inches/hour? Per Figure 1106.1 in the Michigan Plumbing Code Section, the rainfall rate is 3 inches/hour for our local area. The rainfall rate is used in the design of building storm systems and is determined by data from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). The City of Detroit requires utilizing 4 inches/hour design rate. The development of this rainfall rate chart was one of the topics covered during our February technical session.

Ron George, CPD was the technical speaker at our February meeting and discussed storm system design. He provided a history of roof drainage with pictures of building roof collapses that lead to various improvements to storm system designs. For example, the development of the rainfall rate sizing charts, the development of ASME Standard A112.6.4.

In addition to discussing the traditional storm system design, Ron also included siphonic system designs in the presentation.

and the greater the difference in elevation the higher suction/velocity/capacity. ASME Standard A112.6.9. is the standard for Siphonic Roof Drains.

siphonic systems. The combination of smaller pipe sizes and no requirement to slope the pipe on siphonic systems can eliminate or lessen the design challenges involving interferences with the structure or other trades.

water vortex from forming, which forces air out of the pipe

increases and the water is pulled off the roof into the pipe system. The high velocity within siphonic systems will create higher thrust loads at joints which will impact the requirements for system bracing.

Siphonic systems are required to be installed exactly as designed; any changes to the system layout requires the system calculations be reviewed. Siphonic systems are also limited to buildings with 30’ maximum vertical height. There are several advantages and disadvantages to utilizing siphonic systems; if you are considering designing a building with a siphonic system, contact a manufacturer for assistance.

Consultant Report John Nussbaum, IPP, FASSE/ASPE

Members, non-members, mechanical and plumbing engineers, contractors and key employees, are you tuned in to your industry professional associations such as ASPE, ASHRE, ASSE, MBPA or the Code Study Development Committee of Southeastern Michigan? Have you asked yourself where are their future leaders

going to come from if you’re not involved or participating?

These professional associations’ leaders are looking for people to mentor and train, in order to carry on the business of bringing you the educational tools needed to make you a professional, and part of a successful company in Southeastern Michigan. Current leaders are in need of bringing some youth with ambition to their board. New board members with drive and new ideas, with the ability to carry the torch, for the accomplishments and successes that have made their associations noteworthy locally, statewide and nationally. I urge you to get involved and participate. You may start by attending some of their board meetings which are open and you may possibly choose to serve on a committee.

Part of Julius Ballanco’s Key Note Address at the ASSE/ASPE Awards Banquet February 7, 2015 was about the training of future leaders.

By the time you read this article, maybe, just maybe outdoor temperatures will begin to approach their seasonal average. I have my doubts. This year, it’s been one deep-freeze after another. I’m thinking Region 2 will set an all-time lowest average temperature for the month of February. Doesn’t that just make you

want to look square into Punxsutawney Phil’s eyes?

As we SPRING forward, we’ll feel the warmth of the sun, witness the snow melting, the ground thawing, see trees

of chirping birds. Ah springtime! :)

As our SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) spirits are lifted we’ll break out the golf clubs (the way I golf, I’m better off to just break them!). ASPE Chapters across Region 2 will be ramping up their trade show, golf outing and special event activities.

On February 28th & March 21st, the Pittsburgh Chapter will host their “Counseling the Boy Scouts of America Plumbing Merit Badge” at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

On March 10th the Eastern MI Chapter will hold their annual NASPE Car Races at the PITC in Troy. March 11th is World Plumbing Day. On this day the Greater Toronto ASPE Chapter will hold their next meeting. This is a big deal as they are very close to becoming a full chapter!

Also on March 11th the Northern Ohio Chapter will be touring the Great Lakes Brewery. The Buffalo-Niagara Chapter is hosting their annual Trade Show March 25 at The Grapevine Banquets in Depew, NY.

Western MI has two upcoming events, a tour of the recently updated Bell’s Brewery in Galesburg on April 8th. On May 19th they will hold their annual golf at the Quail Ridge GC in Ada.

Southwest Ohio will celebrate their annual ASPE Night with the Dayton Dragons on May 29th. You can join the Central Ohio Chapter on June 16th for their annual golf outing.

In addition to their Boy Scout Plumbing Merit Badge events, the Pittsburgh Chapter will be hosting their annual golf outing at the River Forest GC in Freeport on June 19th. The Rochester Chapter is also planning a June golf outing

The Evansville Satellite Chapter will host their 3rd annual golf outing at the Cambridge GC on June 25th. Following this, Central Indiana will hold their annual golf outing at the Ironwood GC NE of Indy on August 7th.

As you see, there is a lot of activity throughout Region 2. So wash the salt off your cars, enjoy the longer days of sunshine and drive to your local ASPE chapter meeting. Engage. Contribute. Educate and Learn.

Please take time out to participate in the festivities; often these events are the main fundraisers for our chapters. For those attending the

before publication. The code committee also meets to plan for hosting one or two code update training sessions after the new code is adopted in Michigan where they invite the Chief Code

to the model plumbing code and they give continuing education credits for those meetings. So in a three year code change cycle the commitment is anywhere between three to six meetings, and if you are selected to represent the committee at the Code hearings, it includes a trip for a few days to the code hearings.

The committee earns money through the sale of code books. They purchase them at wholesale price from the International Code Council and sell them at retail price. If you need a code book contact John Nussbaum at (313) 341-7661. (ext. 211).

In the last six years or so the committee has not met as often as they did in the past. We have lost many old timers like John Matthews and many others who have served on the committee so we need new people to step up and participate.

We would like to elect a new Board of Directors and maybe add a couple of people to the board as directors to help ease the workload. We would like to elect a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and two or three Directors. In addition we just need people to participate. Attendees will get to review the code changes and hear the arguments for and against these changes. This is a very educational process and it gives participants a good foundation for understanding of code changes. During the testimony it often comes out when a code changes is being proposed to try and give a manufacturer a marketing advantage or in some cases, the code change reason statement shows it is a legitimate health and safety issue.

We are hoping to get things rolling again this March 27th at 8 am at the Plumbing Industry Training Center located at 1911 Ring Drive in Troy, MI. The committee will welcome all participants and we need to get the word out about this meeting. We will provide a continental breakfast and lunch. Please call John Nussbaum at (313) 341-7661. (ext. 211)

VP Code Study & Develop-ment Group of S.E. MIRon George, CPD

The Code Study & Development Committee of S.E. Michigan was founded by John Nussbaum back around 1990ish. John was Executive Director of the Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Contractors Association of Southeastern Michigan. He had a lot of contacts in the plumbing and mechanical industry. John gathered

many plumbing industry professionals including engineers, designers, contractors, inspectors, manufacturer’s reps, manufacturers, testing labs, and citizens to serve on a Consensus Committee, they review the proposed code change submittals which helps us prepare our comments for presentation at the code change hearings through testimony from selected representatives on the committee.

I originally got involved with codes and standards at the urging of Pat Higgins whom I met while attending a code change hearing many years ago. When John Nussbaum started this committee, it was an opportunity for me to help participate in a local forum. The meetings are run like code hearings with a moderator leading discussion for formulating a position on behalf of the committee for review and discussion at the code hearings. Many of the code changes that are controversial or when very technical in nature, we allow the representatives of the committee to

without mandating a position from the committee. I was selected as a representative of this group in the early 1990s and I have attended many code hearings over the years with John Matthews and John Nussbaum.

Barry Pines of C&R Plumbing is the President and I am serving as Vice President from the 2015 code change cycle. Barry made an announcement about this upcoming meeting at the last ASPE Eastern Michigan chapter meeting just before I spoke on “Storm Drains and Siphonic Roof Drains” on Tuesday, February 17, 2015.

outcome of many code changes. Barry and I have been participating with John Nussbaum orchestrating this committee from the beginning and there have been a lot of members retire and pass away over the last 25 years. John Nussbaum is getting on in years and during a recent discussion he said we need to bring younger people into this process. Many members of this committee have been selected over the years to serve on the IPC, IRC, IMC and IFGC code committees and interpretation committees. The Code Committee generally meets about two times before the code hearings to review proposed code changes for a three year code change cycle. Then they generally
