Super Bowl ring auctioned to pay backtaxesGREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)A formerGreen Bay Packers lineman whoseteams won the first two Super Bowlswill have at least one of his champi-onship rings auctioned off to recover

some of the $1.7 million the federalgovernment says he owes in backtaxes.

Fuzzy Thurston, 77, played for thePackers from 1959 to 1967. Federalmarshals have seized his Super BowlII ring, and authorities are trying totrack down his other Super Bowl ringalong with other memorabilia to auc-tion off in accordance with a courtorder.

Messages left at Thurstons Waupacahome werent immediately returned.Green Bay lawyer Owen Monfils, whorepresented Thurston in some of histax cases, told the Green Bay Press-Gazette he was certain Thurston did-nt owe nearly as much as thegovernment claims.

The tax fight stems from Thurstonspost-Packers days, when he and his

business partners opened a chain ofrestaurants. According to a federalcomplaint, Thurston and the otherswithheld federal income taxes fromemployee salaries but failed to turn allthe money over to the Internal Rev-enue Service.
