‘‘ ‘‘ AMIGOS senior FIRST QUARTER 2020 JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH I was thinking about the importance of socialization. Most of us have lost someone close in our lives whether to relocation, break-ups, or even death. As we age and experience additional years, we lose touch with more and more people. Change is the nature of life, however, sometimes adaptation can be difficult. Loss can leave us lonely and searching for companionship, but it can also be a time of renewal. We can restart with robust energy and transformed direction. We can go it alone if we want to, but I think humans are inherently social animals. Companionship is a feeling of fellowship, friendship and familiarity between those who have connected for whatever reason. We spend time with our companions, enjoying activities such as movies, walks, or shopping. We share conversation, meals, ideas and hobbies. We find safety and solace being together which leads to fulfilled hearts and contented souls. Companionship is often a healing force for a broken heart. We’ve all suffered emotional pain for which it is said time is the best medicine. I think a buddy is a pretty effective remedy too. There are moments when sitting quietly with a friend, even if we’re not chatting but just watching television, is a welcome respite from being alone. We find companionship in many places. FIRST QUARTER 2020 JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH

I was thinking about the importance of socialization. Most of us have lost someone close in our lives whether to relocation, break-ups, or even death. As we age and experience additional years, we lose touch with more and more

people. Change is the nature of life, however, sometimes adaptation can be difficult. Loss can leave us lonely and searching for companionship, but it can also be a time of renewal. We can restart with robust energy and transformed direction. We can go it alone if we want to, but I think humans are inherently social animals. Companionship is a feeling of fellowship, friendship and familiarity between those who have connected for

whatever reason. Sometimes we find it with a new puppy. Sometimes we find it with a new romance. Sometimes we find it with a quilting bee. Sometimes we find it at church. Sometimes we find it at Senior Amigos. Remember we aren’t just an exercise facility. We have knitters, card and game players, embroiderers, history buffs and Spanish students too. The center is intended to provide participants with wellness in whatever manifestation that can be accomplished. If it means keeping physically healthy, brainwaves active or friendships fostered, then that’s what we will try

to provide. If you are seeking companionship please come to the monthly luncheons and sit at a table with people you don’t know. You are sure to forge a new relationship. Alternatively, come to line dancing and “grapevine” with the others. Attend one of the many presentations or crafting classes and share your scissors. If you’re searching for companionship, Senior Amigos can be a gateway to undiscovered avenues. Companionship cannot be found in calendars, but dates can! Once again this past December, we created calendars for all of you as our holiday gift. Please be sure to thank Daphne Wirthlin for the donation of the beautiful Organ Mountain

photos which grace each page. If you have not yet received yours, please pick one up at the office before supplies are depleted. Thank you for your participation at Senior Amigos!

Message from the CEO

Derrick CuencaMountainView Chief Executive Officer

All classes except 5:15 yoga and 5:30 t'ai chi chuan are cancelled on Luncheon Days!

Welcome to 2020!

On behalf of the entire MountainView team, please allow me to wish

each of you a Happy and Prosperous New Year! Our MountainView Senior Amigos is a wonderful organization made stronger each year because of your engagement! Thanks for being part of MountainView. 2019 was yet another banner year for MountainView Regional Medical Center and MountainView Medical Group. It would never have been possible without the support of our local community, our local providers and our over 1500 employed staff. We thank all whom have contributed so much in our quest to provide our hometown with compassionate and safe healthcare. As we enter the new year, we are able to better serve our community and region thanks to several recently completed and ongoing initiatives. Investment in People We are justifiably proud of the list of new providers we recruited or were able to bring onto the MountainView team in 2019.

Cardiothoracic Surgery•Isabel Vigil, MD, Family Care•Robert Fakler, PA, Cardiovascular and

Investment in Buildings and Technology We are also justifiably proud of the recently completed Surgery Services expansion and renovation project. This $23 million investment in our community

increases our operating rooms, as well as pre- and post-op bays to better serve you. We also completed and occupied the new Children’s Center, which creates the largest pediatric clinic in our community, located in a new facility specifically designed and built for this purpose. Additionally, we added new family care clinics with the addition of MountainView Medical Group Family Care at North Main and Family Care at Wyatt. We are now completing construction of our newest clinic, MountainView Medical Group Heart and Vascular Center—Cardiovascular Care Services, which will include the community’s newest specifically equipped cardiac imaging services clinic. All of these investments are part of our strategic effort to provide quality care close to your home as part of our integrated MountainView healthcare team

Quest for Excellence All of these initiatives are aimed at the development of the best possible integrated healthcare team to serve our hometown and southern New Mexico. To achieve this requires teamwork and excellent management, across the board. We were honored to be the recipients of two awards that specifically speak to our ongoing efforts in this regard. In September, we were recognized by the New Mexico Hospital Association as recipient of the Quest for Excellence Award. This is their premiere honor for hospital quality and performance improvement. In October, we were honored to be selected, by CHS, for receipt of the Operational Excellence Award based upon our strong performance in improving our AMA/LWOT%, arrival-to-triage time, EMS arrivals and case management. 2020 and Beyond All of these steps better prepare us to meet the future healthcare needs of our hometown and region. We look forward to being your healthcare partner for the years to come. We believe in Las Cruces and New Mexico. Derrick Cuenca, MountainView CEO

The next time you visit MountainView Regional Medical Center, take a minute to scan the area for folks interacting with patients in the hospital. Many aren’t wearing scrubs or a stethoscope. Chances are you’ll see dozens each time you visit, perhaps starting with the receptionist that greets you at the door. Many of those folks are actually volunteers, helping to make sure things run efficiently and that patients are comfortable. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015, over 4.9 million Americans volunteered their time in a hospital or health-related organization. MountainView Regional Medical Center appreciates its volunteers who support our everyday operations. Our volunteer program is robust and we always welcome people interested in volunteering. In addition, volunteers who are 50 years old or better can join Senior Amigos for FREE! Volunteering is the right thing to do for so many reasons: for your community, for your health, and for your leadership development. For more information on volunteering at MountainView call or email Annette Morales at 575-522-0502, [email protected]. In spite of the stress of life and the lack of time—or maybe because of it—get out there and volunteer. Do good, feel happier, build relationships, learn new skills and have an impact on something important to you.

An advertising campaign created by the U.S. Forest Service began in 1944 featuring the slogan “Smokey Says—Care Will Prevent 9 out of 10 Forest Fires.” The slogan changed to “Remember... Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires” in 1947 and was associated with Smokey Bear for more than five decades. The purpose was to educate the public about the dangers of unplanned human-caused wildfires. In 2001, the message was changed to “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires” because of the many fires that were breaking out in biomes other than forests. Wildfires are a year-round phenomenon in every region of the country now, 90% of which are caused by humans. This only emphasizes Smokey’s message. The living symbol of Smokey Bear was a five-pound, three-month-old American black bear cub who was found in 1950 after the Capitan Gap fire that burned in the New Mexico Capitan Mountains. Smokey had climbed a tree to escape the blaze, but his paws and hind legs were burned. New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Ranger Ray Bell flew the cub to Santa Fe, where he, his wife Ruth, and their children Don and Judy cared for the bear. Smokey was later flown to Washington D.C. where he lived out his life at the National Zoo. During his 26 years at the zoo, Smokey drew millions of visitors and was a national hero. The original ad campaign didn’t gain ground until the real bear cub was incorporated. It is now the longest-running public service announcement campaign in United States history. Today, Smokey is a prolific blogger, with social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Flickr. He has more than 300,000 friends on Facebook and 24,000 people follow him on Twitter. In 1957, Ray Bell became the first state forester in the newly created forestry department in New Mexico. He became director in 1958 and served until his retirement in 1971. Throughout his life, Bell was known as the man who brought Smokey out of the forest fire. He devoted his life to speaking to various organizations and schools about preserving the nation’s forests. He was a mainstay in promoting the Smokey Bear Museum in Capitan, N.M. Editor’s note: Don Bell grew up and married Jimmie Sue (now Hobert) who is currently a Senior Amigos participant. Mary Bell, Ray Bell’s granddaughter, is a life-long close friend of Senior Amigos manager Valerie Stiles.

Patients may seek heart surgery for a number of reasons, including coronary artery disease, severe chest pain due to narrowing arteries or a blockage in a blood vessel or as an emergency response to a heart attack. Cardiovascular surgeons at MountainView offer a wide range of surgical treatment options, from open-heart surgery to minimally invasive procedures, and are committed to offering quality care. Sometimes patients need more advanced surgical care to heal their hearts. We offer transcatheter valve replacement, using minimally invasive cardiac and arrhythmia methods, in addition to open and interventional aortic, carotid, and peripheral vascular techniques. MountainView’s robotic and minimally invasive surgery promotes individualized treatment of each patient with anticipated reduced recovery times and smaller incisions.

Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drown your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” — Steve Jobs

Seniors Need to Live Life to the Fullest

We’ve all heard of the bucket list—the list of things we want to do before we die. Now is the time to start checking things off that list. Let’s take a day here or there and partake in those adventures we’ve been putting off. Spend time and energy on experiences that are fulfilling. Travel, write a book, go hiking in the Organs, take a hot-air balloon ride. It’s time to act on what have always been dreams but not yet reality. Too often we choose to spend our lives saving money for a rainy day, and working in occupations which leave us drained and unhappy. We give every cent, minute and opportunity to our children. We think that we’ll get around to doing that ‘something special’ some day, but then we find ourselves in our golden years having done nothing fun. Living life to the fullest doesn’t mean we have to spend all our money. On the other hand why not? Rather

“than stockpiling cash in our mattress to pass to our heirs, why not take a cruise? Rather than sitting on the couch watching television, why not enroll in a sculpting course? Rent an RV and embark on a cross-country trip. We’ve saved and saved for the chance to enjoy our retirement, so let’s do! These things don’t have to be big-ticket items. Maybe the bucket list says to spend more time with the grandchildren. That might mean taking them to a movie or the park every Saturday. Maybe we just want to try new foods. Make Friday, dinner-out night and visit those restaurants you’ve yet to enjoy. Learn to knit and purl and make scarves for next year’s holiday gifts. Schedule monthly lunches with friends. Volunteer. Go dancing! The point is, now is the time to do as much as you can with your life and make every day worth as much as you are worth! Enjoy every minute of life!
