The design focuses on simple and local approach to achieve a green and self sustainable school. An empty plot in Allepey , Kerala which is randomly used as a parking spot for the church goers is taken as the site. One of the basic plans is to teach and encourage children to be a part of the natural ecosystem and hence the site next to the puzha.River algae formed in the puzha could be decomposed along with animal wastes in bio-gas plants for small supplies of energy.

First Prize : Annual National Design Competition ( ANDC ) 2011 Centre for Traditional Arts and Heritage , Iqbal Maidan , Bhopal

Event Organizers : NASA ,India Other team members : Atul Shekhar , Kaushik Naarayan

4

The basic idea is to redesign Iqbal maidan without disturbing its original feel. A series of walls parallel to each other originating from the existing shaheen tower symbolizing the different parallel yet distinct tribal traditions is the design proposal. The circular space around the statue can be used as a platform for the performance of indigenous tribal dances like Ghoomar.

The plaza behaves as a funnel for people walking into the building from the maidan and vice versa and a part of the plaza also functions as a stage for political gatherings.

The wall profile responds to the memories of the city by following a similar pattern to the earlier structure.

The challenge to the brief was selecting an existing heritage site that had lost its context in today's world and thus required re intervention. The Golcha cinema , Jaipur which lies at a crucial junction between the old and the new city provided an opportunity for a new social space. The design also understood the deteriorating condition of the wall and hence proposed the creation of a porous pedestrian access through the wall connecting both the parts.

Design Schemes Included:

Better Space Usage and Facilities Increased Social space

3 The experimental ‘DIY’ project aims at studying the local refugee community of Vikram nagar, Kotla .The existing refugee welfare association (RWA) notice boards are used as a platform to get the people to interact with the boring inanimate objects .These interactions will be recorded through stop motion. The second part of the project is to interview the people and create an internal social networking server for the local residents so that they can know each other better. Since the ‘vela’ people of kotla community will be involved ,hence the name ‘vela kotla’

The crux of the housing design is to create a social open environment and climatological and sustainable construction within the industrial area. The housing scheme hopes to revitalize the western Yamuna canal and add to extinct greens of the area. A dilapidated factory has bee n redesigned as a housing for the migrant workers.

How does social media affect the existing Offline world ?

Are Social networking sites like Facebook the new social spaces ? What are the design parameters of these social spaces ? What kind of social interactions happen in the online world ? Does the use of social networking sites affect human behavior in the physical world ? What is the definition of a public space in today's world ? How can architects use social media to design better spaces ?

Architecture & people behavior

impact

We see that even though people still prefer face to face interactions over those in SNS’s ,the role of SNS’s like Facebook as social spaces is increasing rapidly with the advancement of technology(touch Pad, faster internet)

Blum, A. (2011, April 14). Here but not Here Retrieved July Tuesday, 2012, from Metropolis Mag: www.metropolis mag.com\here-but-not-here Andrew blum.htm

Humans, being social animals exist in a collective world where they interact voluntarily or involuntarily . These interactions happen everywhere, be it a public square or a busy street ,a community church or even a simple water cooler point. But what was disturbing was that according to a research conducted by Andrew Blum (Blum, 2011) with the invention of the internet and social media, less and less people were going out and more and more people were going behind the computers on the internet. Today's is the digital age of machines and the “internet” where people have developed a new medium for social interaction through Social Networking Sites (SNS) . A parallel online world is created where humans create their identity, meet each other , share their interests and perform many other social activities that might not have been done in the real world. define the space. According to Andrew Blum , architects have failed to understand these new social spaces and their impact on the real world.(Blum,2011).

Ground Floor Plan

Typical Floor Plan

The Hotel is inspired by the Firoz shah Kotla Stadium and the Kotla Baoli (one of the few circular baolis in the world). An attempt is made to create the feel of the stadium within the hotel. But at the same time, maximum greens of the existing park are left open and landscaped to develop play and other social activities that are presently absent.

The Office is programmed with the best possible circulation and area programming possible to form a Tetris like structure .These multiple boxes frame different activities or functions of the office as well as give multiple views of the green landscaped areas outside. The design also provides an individual identity for retail stores through these boxes.

Iconic House Design

The House tries to connect the inside and the outside fluidly through a series of greens. Exposed brick façade , western jaali ,water channels and other traditional architecture form part of the design. The iconicity lies in the fact that the house will be modern by being highly simple ,traditional and climate responsive

Tensile Study and design

2

3 4 5

The first part of the exercise was to study traditional use of cloth as a building material and the spaces created by them. The Second phase was to improvise tensile design. In this case a dynamic tensile design is attempted . Music is converted into notes and depending on the pitch and rhythm, the tensiles are programmed to dance. Various songs were converted into notes that could be programmed to the structure thus creating a dancing effect.
