�e Summer Reading Program will begin on June 1st. �ere

are three programs, each designed for a di�erent age group.

�ere is an early learning program designed for children

(and their parents!) from birth to "ve years old.

�ere is a school age program for children age six to eleven

and one for teens twelve years old and up. You don’t even

need to have a library card (although you should probably

get one!). See a library sta� member to sign up beginning on

June 1st. �e Summer Reading Program is a great way to

encourage reading throughout the summer as well as provid-

ing plentiful opportunities for parents and children to inter-

act in meaningful ways around literacy.

Upstairs at the library you will "nd many CDs appropriate for small children and older kids too. �ese range

from historical tapes, for example: Harriet Tubman or Abraham Lincoln to nature tapes on the Tundra,

Meet Your Librarian: Diana Maurer

Personally, Diana enjoys mystery "ction with James Patterson being her favorite author. Coincidentally, mysteries are the genre of books most checked out, followed closely by science "ction. Patrons might have also noticed the expanded Spanish section which is becoming quite popular.

Diana sees the library as a communi-ty hub and stresses that if we had a larger building, we could o�er more programs as well as stock more books. She feels that the library is especially important in this commu-nity as many people are unable to get a Wi-Fi connection at home, so they depend on the library for the com-puters. Diana acknowledges that she

really enjoys her contact with the public in her “Woodland Library family.”

Diana Maurer is a familiar face in the library. She is always smiling, ready to help and has worked in Woodland Community Library for about six years. She has also worked at the Vancouver and Cascade Park branch libraries.

She lives in LaCenter and has "ve grandchildren in the area. In her spare time, Diana likes to read, of course, and work in her garden, as well as spend time with family.

Diana’s main job is to check books in and out of circulation, shelve books and assist with reference questions, but she also chooses a theme of the month for the young readers.

What’s Happening with the Friends

�e Library Friends Fair, which at-tracted members of 13 local library communities, was held in the Water Resources Education Center in Van-couver, WA, on May 18, 2013.

�e members shared their past and future ideas and goals. Noel and Nan-cy Johnson represented the Friends of the Woodland Community Library.

Noel said the main goal of the Wood-land group is to build a new library. He stated that to accomplish this we "rst have to change our area to include the entire Woodland School District.

Nancy Tessman reported on the goals of the entire group. Everyone was very upbeat and agreed that libraries are more important than ever.

�e meeting room was awesome and the food was even better. Good food, good friends in a perfect location. Well done.

AAUW is the American Association of University Women, but it is neither an association of exclu-sively women or even only ‘university’ women. AAUW has male members and accepts members with a two-year Associ-ate’s or higher degree.

It is a national organization that has been empowering women since 1881. AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. It promotes educational and professional opportunities for women in the United States and around the globe and it is one of the world’s largest sources of funding for graduate women.

AAUW’s Legal Advocacy Fund works to combat sex dis-crimination in higher education and the workplace by provid-ing "nancial support to plainti�s. Currently the organization

is actively involved in the issue of sexual assaults in the mili-tary.

AAUW has done ground-breaking work in many areas: the con"dence gap between boys and girls in middle school and high school; sexual harassment in schools; sex discrimination in academia; the gender pay gap; why women lag behind men in the "elds of science, math, engineering and technology (STEM).

�e Cowlitz County Branch of AAUW has two book dis-cussion groups that meet in Longview. For many years we have given a scholarship, in the spring, to a young woman who is a resident of Cowlitz County and who will be a junior or senior in the following fall at a four-year university. We also participate in a state program to recognize high school girls who excel in science, math and technology.

Participants earn rewards through reading, and others by completing educational activities. �e two little kids’ programs involve completing reading activities for each prize. Each child will get a game board (they can turn in up to six for a total of six prizes in the summer). Each game board takes around

three hours of reading to complete. �ey get a prize and an entry into the grand prize drawing.

Teens need to read ten hours for each prize. For the "rst four prizes that they get, they can choose a $5 Amazon.com giN card or an entry into the grand prize drawing. ANer the fourth one, they get an entry into the grand prize drawing. Every branch will get to choose a grand prize winner. We all know the value of keeping young people engaged in reading and learning throughout the summer. :e Summer Reading program not only encourages kids to read, it provides families with meaningful and fun ways to interact with each other while they are completing the various activities.

In addition to the regular Summer Reading program, the library is providing a total of SIX PERFORMANCES SIX PERFORMANCES SIX PERFORMANCES SIX PERFORMANCES during the months of June, July and August. :ese events are always free, entertaining and educational for all kids (and their grown-ups!). We will have our @rst performance at 3:00pm on June 26th.

Fort Vancouver Regional Li-brary District o�ers our pa-trons access to a large and pow-erful selection of electronic databases that are available to everyone with a library card, free of charge. You can access them at home by going to www.fvrl.org and clicking on the “Research Databases” link or from the catalog computers in the library. �ey are con-veniently indexed by broad subject headings such as

“Books and Literature” and “Homework Help”. �ese re-sources are not considered “Internet” sources by teachers. You generally cite the articles as you would cite an encyclope-dia entry or a magazine/newspaper article. Plus. If you are ever in a quan-dary as to what to read next, this is a great place to start. BOOMS TO BREW HALF MARATHON IN WOODLAND

�e "rst annual Booms to Brew half marathon and 10K run was held in Woodland on April

21, 2013. �ere was a little mist in the cool morning air as 800 people gathered near the start-

ing line for the race.

Deb Kitchen said, “It was a real privilege to participate in the event.”

She sees the event as a tribute to those killed or injured at the Boston

Marathon. Everyone observed a moment of si-

lence before the race started.

“�is is an exciting event for Woodland,” Deb

said.

Maryalicia Verdecchia ran in the Blooms to Brew

half marathon in Woodland. She says she looks

forward to the event next year in Woodland.
