WELCOME TO 1st GRADE

Ready, Set, READ!!!

We are looking forward to this

year’s group of 1st graders. As

you will find out, first grade is a

very important year in your child’s

reading development. Teaching your child to read is our main goal. Whether your child is

starting the year as a non-reader,

beginning reader, or fluent reader,

we will provide instruction to

increase their reading skills. The

best way to help your child with

reading is to provide as many opportunities to read at home as possible. Learning to read is a big

accomplishment and it takes time,

encouragement, effort, and

patience. Please show your child

the importance of reading by

making daily reading practice a priority. At-home reading logs are

due every Monday (1st grade

required homework). Your active

involvement in your child’s reading

practice will make a significant

difference to their success!

Reading is fun, reading is fun,

Reading is fun for everyone,

The more you read,

The better you read,

So READ, READ, READ!

One of the most exciting things about 1st grade

is having the opportunity to have more than one

teacher. Your child will have a specialist each

day: Mrs. Gillyard for Writing (twice a week),

Mr. Grab for Library (once a week), and

Mr. Ansotigue for PE (once a week), and Music

(once a week).

Please make sure your child brings their book

back on Library day. On PE days, students need

to wear shoes and clothes appropriate for PE

activities.

Messages From Home

Notes for the office or the teacher must be taken care of first thing in the morning. If your child will not be riding their regular bus home or if someone else will be picking your child up from school, you must notify the office. Your child can only be released to those individuals listed as an emergency contact for your child. Please check with the office to make sure your information is current. Without a written note or a phone call to the office, your child will be put on the bus that they regularly ride.

Math Message Please work with your child on the following skills:

1) Count to 120 by ones (0-120).

2) Count to 120 starting at any number less

than 120.

3) Write the number for a given number of

objects to 120.

4) Read and write numbers to 120.

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)

Beginning October 6th, the district will move to 1-hour “late starts” on designated Mondays to implement Professional Learning Communities.

WORD POWER WORDS

It is important to making spelling practice a part of your child’s daily homework routine. Each spelling list will have a phonics focus (i.e.: short sound of “a”, words with “ar,” etc…). Six of the words will have this sound, two words will be review words, and two words will be from the previous week’s reading story. Pre-test day is Wednesday. This will help you know which words to practice more with your child. Friday is the final test (graded) . Friday’s test includes two bonus words to see if your child can apply the phonics skill to unpracticed words.
