Our Opening Prayer will be given by

Can you find the way from the Gate to

Eternal Life?

Attention Activity

Here’s the path we found.

Attention Activity

• Life can be like a maze sometimes.

• We can make many different decisions and follow many different paths, but only one path will lead us to eternal life with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

• That path is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Attention Activity

If the path through the maze represents the gospel, what do you think the “Gate” represents?

Attention Activity

Let’s read 2 Nephi 31:17.17 Wherefore, do the things which I have 17 Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should do; for, for this your Redeemer should do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost. fire and by the Holy Ghost.

Partake of the sacramentPartake of the sacrament

• After the Apostasy, the gospel of Jesus Christ was no longer on the earth.

Attention Activity

• The priesthood was not on the earth either, so no one could properly be baptized, be confirmed, or partake of the sacrament.

Attention Activity

• The gospel and the priesthood had to be restored in the latter days.

Attention Activity

This is what our lesson is about today

““Lesson 12: Important Ordinances Are Restored,” Primary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997),57

Lesson 12: Important Lesson 12: Important Ordinances are Ordinances are

RestoredRestored

• When the priesthood was restored, men who held it were able to baptize, confirm, and bless and pass the sacrament..

• This was the first time since the Apostasy that these ordinances had been done with the proper authority.

Jesus also taught the people about baptism.

Those who want to be baptized must repent.

He said they must be baptized to become members of His Church.

They must love and obey Jesus. They must also be at least eight years old.

Jesus taught the right way to baptize.

He said a priest in the Aaronic Priesthood or a man who has the Melchizedek Priesthood may baptize a person. The man takes the person into the water and says a special prayer.

The man who is baptizing puts the person down underthe water.

Then he brings the person out of the water.

When people are baptized, they promise to obey Jesus.

They also promise to say and do good things.

Jesus told about blessing babies. Men who have the Melchizedek Priesthood can bless babies.

The men hold the baby in their arms, and one man gives the baby a name and a blessing.

Jesus told about the sacrament.

But if we do something bad, we But if we do something bad, we should not take the sacrament should not take the sacrament until we have repented.

He said we should take the sacrament often.

He died for us on the cross.

The bread helps us think of His body.

We take the sacrament to remember Jesus.

The water helps us think of the blood of Jesus.

We remember that he suffered and bled for us in the Garden of Gethsemane.

We make covenants when we take the sacrament.

We promise that we will try to be like Jesus

A covenant is a promise.

We also promise to obey His commandments.

If we keep our covenants, we are promised that His Spirit will be with us.

On 6 April 1830, Joseph held a meeting to organize the Church.

Oliver Cowdery, Hyrum Smith, Samuel Smith, David Whitmer, and Peter Whitmer came to help him.

They had all been baptized.

Other people also came to the meeting.

Joseph and Oliver put their hands on each man’s head to confirm him a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and give him the gift of the Holy Ghost.

After the meeting, many people were baptized, including Joseph Smith’s mother and father.

What a wonderful day!

The Church of Jesus Christ was on the earth again.

After a few weeks, there were 27 members of the Church.

They did not all live in the same town. Joseph Smith asked them to come to a conference, which is a special meeting for all the Saints.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ are called Saints.

The Saints had the sacrament at the conference.

The Holy Ghost blessed the Saints, and they were very happy.

Some men were ordained to the priesthood.

Some people had already been baptized into other churches, and they wondered why it was necessary to be baptized again.

Joseph inquired of the Lord and received the revelation recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 22.

In this revelation the Lord explained that the people who had been baptized into other churches had not been baptized by

someone with the proper priesthood authority, so they needed to be baptized again by someone who did have the authority.

Some other people who attended the conference were not members of the Church.

They learned about the gospel and wanted to join the Church, so they were baptized.

After the conference, Joseph Smith went to another town.

Some people there also wanted to be baptized. Joseph said they could be baptized in a nearby stream.

The people built a small dam in the stream to make thewater deep enough to perform baptisms. In the night, some people destroyed the dam.

The dam was rebuilt, and Oliver Cowdery began to baptize people.

A mob is a group of mean people.

Soon a mob came.

They said bad things and tried to hurt the Saints, but the Lord kept the people safe.

The mob continued trying to make trouble for the Church.

They told lies about Joseph Smith and had him arrested.

At a trial, they found people to give false testimony against the Prophet.

But many other people told the truth about Joseph, proving the words of the enemies to be false.

Joseph was released, but almost immediately he was arrested again by people from a nearby county.

Another trial was held, and Joseph wasagain found innocent and was released.

While he was imprisoned, people spit on him and would not give him food.

Meanwhile, the Saints in Colesville had been praying that Joseph would be safe and would be able to return and confirm them as members of the Church.

At the end of August, Joseph and Oliver Cowdery returned with some other men to Colesville.

On the way they came upon a large group of men working on the road.

Some of these men were enemies of the Prophet, but although they looked closely at the Prophet and his friends, the men did not recognize any of them and allowed them to pass by.

Because of this miracle, Joseph arrived safely in Colesville, and the members there were able to be confirmed and partake of the sacrament.

Earlier in August, Joseph had planned a small meeting to confirm his wife, Emma, and

another woman.

When Joseph went to get wine for When Joseph went to get wine for the sacrament, he was met by an the sacrament, he was met by an angel. angel.

The angel told him not to buy wine The angel told him not to buy wine from his enemies (see from his enemies (see D&C 27:3). ).

It was on the fifteenth day of May, 1829, that we were ordained under the hand of this messenger, and baptized.

2 For, behold, I say unto you, that it mattereth not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an eye single to my glory—remembering unto the Father my body which was laid down for you, and my blood which was shed for the remission of your sins.

Return

77 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.

Return

17 Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost.

2 Nephi 31:17–20

18 And then are ye in this strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life; yea, ye have entered in by the gate; ye have done according to the commandments of the Father and the Son; and ye have received the Holy Ghost, which witnesses of the Father and the Son, unto the fulfilling of the promise which he hath made, that if ye entered in by the way ye should receive.

2 Nephi 31:17–20

19 And now, my beloved brethren, after ye have gotten into this strait and narrow path, I would ask if all is done? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for ye have not come thus far save it were by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.

2 Nephi 31:17–20

20 Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.
