10” Benzene pipe repair

A leakage occurred at a carbon steel pipe carrying benzene at a refinery in the Netherlands during Christmas (25.12.). The benzene squirted out of a 10” Ø carbon steel pipe from a hole of the size of 1 mm Ø with a pressure of more than 10 bar close (~ 20 mm) to the pipe-support.

All following procedures have been carried out after the shut down of the facility (that means no pressure in the pipe system). The leak was first closed with a piece of Viton rubber glued on a 100 x 100 x 2 mm steel plate, generously filled with MM-metal oL-steelceramic & Hardener red, positioned over the hole and fixed with a Bandit® strap...

...and generously covered with a thick layer of MM-metal oL-steelceramic but now mixed with Hardener yellow.

During the Christmas holydays the pipe was put back into service, while a reinforcement box (called mini box) was pre-fabricated at EMHA’s workshop.

On the 4th of January the mini box was mounted over the small plate and fixed with Bandits® to the pipe and its support.

All seams were closed with MM-metal SS-steel & Hardener red for a fast cure.

Between pipe and mini box a closed cell neoprene rubber foam was glued.

After curing the box was injected with MM-metal SS-steel & Hardener yellow for a more gentle cure and twice the strength. For injection the liquid version of this PolymerMetal is used.

PolymerMetall® made by MultiMetall

MultiMetall Germany invests for more than 30 years in polymer-metallic material technologies for the maintenance of metals and alloys. In plants and constructions often functional particularly important components are exposed to stresses like break, tear, corrosion, cavitation, chemical or thermal demands.

Components treated with PolymerMetals can be preventatively protected against above mentioned stresses. Furthermore MultiMetall’s cold repair technology facilitates a gentle material treatment and a durable repair of damaged parts.
