WHY DO YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS? Being able to convert between mixed

numbers and improper fractions allows you to be able to move easily from one form to another.

This will help with solving problems that may require one form over the other.

VOCABULARY Improper Fraction: An improper

fraction is a fraction with a numerator that is greater than or equal to the denominator.

Ex: 19/5 21/8

Mixed Number: A mixed number is the sum of a whole number and a fraction.

Ex: 2 1/5 6 1/4

CONVERTING IMPROPER FRACTIONS INTO MIXED NUMBERS

1. Divide to see how many times the denominator will go into the numerator – this will be your whole number.

2. Your remainder will be your new numerator.OR multiply the whole number and denominator and subtract that answer from the numerator to get your new numerator.

3. Keep the same denominator.4. Simplify if needed!
