T he idea of Scouting was conceivedin South Africa by Baden Powell of

Gilwel while he worked as a soldierduring the Mafeking War.

On 1st August 1907 he organized thefirst experimental camp with 20 boysfrom different backgrounds in BrownSea Island in England to test his ideas.It was so successful that from then on,scouting spread throughout the worldlike a bushfire.

Celebrate 100 years of Scouting

Scouting is involving, exciting and empowering!

Baden Powell put his ideas in a book “Scouting for Boys” in 1908. Today Scouting has a membership of 28million boys and girls in 216 countriesand territories.

Why celebrate?August 1st, 2007 will mark 100 years of scouting hence the centenary

celebrations. During the celebrations,the scouts will appreciate what scouting

has offered them and the whole worldin the last 100 years. Theseachievements include:• Education to young people• Making a difference to others and

promoting good relationships with thecommunity

• Breaking all kinds of barriers anddemonstrate unity in world scouting

• Education for peace

The Scouts SunriseScouts will also participate inwelcoming the 2nd Century of scoutingon 1st August, 07 at 8 am. This day hasbeen named The Scouts Sunrise .Scouts, former scouts, parents of scoutsand scouts supporters from thecommunity will take part in the variousexciting activities for the day.They will also get involved inimplementing the Centenary Initiative- “Trees for Peace” by planting trees in various identifiedareas. EducationAttended Rose Hill School,Tunbridge Wells and wasawarded a scholarship toCharterhouse, a well known

public school. His firstintroduction to scoutingskills was through cookingin the nearby woods, whileavoiding his teachers.

The woods were out-of-bounds. He also played thepiano and violin, was anartist, and enjoyed acting.He spent his holidays onyachting or canoeing tripswith his brothers.

Family In January 1912, Baden-Powell met Olave St. ClairSoames while on his way toNew York to start one of hisScouting World Tours. Olavewas 23, while he was 55years old. They shared thesame birthday.

They became engaged inSeptember of the same year,and married in secret on 30October 1912. As a weddinggift, Scouts of England eachdonated a penny to buy Baden-Powell a car. A monument to their marriagelies inside St. Mary’s Church,Brownsea Island.

One of the first decisions inmaking a fire is where toput it and how to ensure itlights properly.

built up so that it radiatesheat and light all around

The Jamboree site:All the Scouts in a sub-camp will carry out programmedactivities under the leadership of Scout Leaders appointed todo so for the 10 camping days.

In Kenya Scouting started on 24thNovember, 1910 with the formation of 1st Nairobi Troop at what is now St.Johns Church, Pumwani.

The first African troop was formed atAlliance Boys High in 1927 openingdoors for many other units later on.

Baden Powell first came in Kenya in1906 for a holiday tour and later on in1935. In 1938, suffering from ill healthdecided to settle at Nyeri in a littlehome he called PaxTu. He lived until hisdeath on January 8, 1941 at the age of

83. He died and was buried in St. PetersChurch Nyeri within the sight of Mt.Kenya.

His wife Olave Powell had been very supportive of his work and thereforecontinued supporting both Scouts andGuides. She was the Chief Guide of theWorld.

She died in 1977 in England but wasburied in Nyeri. Baden Powell shared abirthday with his wife “ February 22”.Scouts and Guides celebrate theirbirthday at Nyeri every year.
