IN 2013, WE HELPED 883 PEOPLE SECURE EMPLOYMENT.
Mike Wynne, President and CEO, EMERGE Community Development
Dear Friends,
For EMERGE, 2014 was a year not only of accomplishment, but of preparation and anticipation. It was a year of new focus, as we sharpened efforts to create better jobs, better lives, and better community. Here are some highlights:
We provided access to better jobs. We placed 907 people in jobs, a five-year high. We’ve developed a whole new focus on training, and helping people think beyond one more low-wage job. I’m particularly delighted to have grown our relationship with Hennepin Technical College, which is allowing us to offer new opportunities to people right here in the neighborhood.
We helped people lead better lives. I’m particularly proud of a 2014 initiative that encouraged welfare-to-work recipients to think beyond entry-level employment. We encouraged 61 people to enroll in training, knowing it would lead to higher earning potential. I was thrilled that the starting wage for graduates exceeded all project goals. It’s rewarding to push participants to believe in themselves and see them strive for more.
We built better community. We moved through a full year of construction on the EMERGE Career and Technology Center (ECTC), which I predict will be a game-changer for people in North Minneapolis. Related to this important project, I was thrilled for EMERGE to be recognized as ‘2014 Neighborhood Builder’ by Bank of America.
And today, I am writing this message early in 2015, from the beautifully restored ECTC. We’ve arrived! Thanks to all of you who spent this year with us, as supporters, partners, and friends. We could not have done it without you.
In gratitude,
Mike Wynne, President and CEO

“EMERGE can help anybody who wants help, I just had to apply myself. I became the victor over my circumstances instead of the victim of them.” —Paul, EMERGE participant
We helped 907 people get jobs with 620 employers. When they first came to EMERGE, 98% were unemployed.
Paul came to EMERGE in late 2014 and completed our New Beginnings Career Workshop, learning new soft skills and how to talk about his background. Then, he was assigned a Workforce Coach who helped him update his resume and get clothes for interviewing. Through EmergeWORKS, our staffing enterprise, he worked temporary jobs while searching for something long-term. When his Workforce Coach referred Paul for a full-time position he interviewed and got the job.

PAY IT FORWARD“I was a client here, so I know it works. Now, I’m paying it forward. A big step is getting participants to trust the process and believe it will work. It’s all worth it when someone calls me to say ‘I got a job.’
