And in This Corner ...Cassius Clay
Presented by Metro Theatre Company performed at the Missouri History
Museum’s Lee Auditorium now thru Sunday, February 28, 2016
Missouri History Museum is located in Forest Park at Lindell and DeBaliviere
February is Black History Month and during this time the lives and contribu-tions of many notable African Ameri-cans are highlighted. Metro Theater Company is staging the play “And in This Corner” to tell the early story of one of the most celebrated boxing figures in history — Muhammad Ali.
Before he became “The Greatest,” Muhammad Ali was just a kid named Cassius Clay growing up in the Jim Crow environment of Louisville, Kentucky. The play tells the story of a young man who believes his potential is unlimited despite the Jim Crow segregation and racism he is surrounded by. In a rage over a stolen bicycle, 12-year-old Cassius meets the white cop who will be his first box-ing coach starting Cassius on his way to Olympic glory. A story of courage and conscience, Cassius learns that more important that personal success is to use his gifts to work for the good of his community.
“And In This Corner” was written by the Detroit award-winning playwright Idris Goodwin. Metro Theater Company is only the second theater to stage the play since its premiere at StageOne Family Theatre in Louisville, KY, Ali’s birthplace. Metro Theater Company primarily tours throughout the St. Louis metropolitan region, and outlying communities in Missouri and southern Illinois.
To learn more about Metro Theater Company and to purchase tickets please visit metroplays.org or the Missouri History Museum at mohistory.org (select the Events link)
