Study Objectives

• Provide national measures of public satisfaction with:– The nation’s highways– Community transportation systems and options– Access to and travel on Federal lands

• Describe travel patterns• Understand how community transportation systems

affect where people live and work and, thus, indirectly affect community development

• Identify the public’s priorities and preferred approaches to solving transportation problems

Survey DesignOperations and Planning/ Environment Survey

• 2,057 people participated in Random Digit Dial (RDD) telephone survey

• ±2 percentage point margin of sampling error

• Baseline for traditional and emerging issues

Infrastructure Survey

• 2,030 people participated in RDD telephone survey

• ±2 percentage point margin of sampling error

• Follow-up to the 1995 National Highway User Survey

• Also assessed satisfaction from a community perspective

Federal Lands Highway Survey

• 1,236 people interviewed at six National Parks and six National Forests

• ±3 percentage point margin of sampling error

• Determined gap between satisfaction with and importance of roadway and operational characteristics
