This year’s group of LIT’s really accomplished a lot. The kids came ready to work and play every-day. The instructors also came ready everyday with a list of goals for the three hour session. I’m happy to report that there wasn’t one day this summer that both the LIT’s and the instructors didn’t work their hardest to accomplish these goals. Our goals ranged from running and swim-ming workouts to practicing lifesaving skills such as can rescues and paddleboard rescues. This year’s group of LIT’s were extremely cooperative and always willing and ready to learn. I can’t say enough about the upper levels. As instructors, we felt it was important to have the older kids talking in front of groups of people. We felt it would build their confidence and help them develop good public relation skills for their future jobs on the beach. Every lesson we taught, we started with a different group of upper level LIT’s introducing the topic or skill and explaining it to the lower level kids. When they finished, the instructors completely reiterated the topic. We felt it was a good idea to get the information to the LIT’s in 3 different ways: 1. by the upper levels teaching
LIFEGUARD INTRAINING PROGRAM
the lower levels 2. the instructors re-teaching and adding real life experiences 3. mak-ing the LIT’s practice the skills in all kinds of ocean conditions. This year’s LIT’s came out of the program with great confidence in
everything from can rescues, to unequipped res-cues, to paddleboard rescues, to line rescues. In LIT we don’t just teach how to make rescues, we teach them over and over again how to recognize situations in which people can get into trouble. We like to call this “Preventative Lifeguarding.” The best lifeguard isn’t the lifeguard that makes 100 rescues a summer; the best lifeguard is the one that makes no rescues and keeps their beach patrons out of danger. We teach the LIT’s this by instructing them how to recognize certain ocean conditions that can be a hazard to an everyday swimmer. This is definitely the most important lesson we want the kids to get out of LIT. We want each LIT to be able to recognize a rip current, recognize strong currents, recognize a swim-mer in distress, and recognize other potential dangers on the beach. As well as working out and learning lifeguarding skills, the LIT’s compete in many tournaments throughout the summer all over the island. I’m happy to say that LBTBP’s program holds the reputation on the island as the most competitive and well-mannered group of
LIT’s. I’m extremely proud of the way this year’s group conducted themselves in competition. They all competed hard and were also the first to congratulate the winners from other teams. The LIT’s represented the hard work and competitive spirit that runs throughout the Long Beach Township Beach Patrol. Some of our strongest competitors were Bobby Huber, Cari McIn-tyre, Mike Walker, Katie Tallon, Brittany Gunther, Liz Wagner, Dan Meenan, Kristen Power, Chris Wright, Tom Clifford, Sean Haydon, Travis Lepley, Sonya Euksuzian, Matt St. Germain, Dan Strasser, Spencer Evans and Roberta Beekman. I’m extremely proud of the way all the LIT’s conducted themselves. All of the kids found unique ways to express themselves.
They always kept us laughing and amused. For example, Kristen Power liked to show up to LIT everyday in the ugliest sun glasses I’ve ever seen. I have no idea where she bought them, but she definitely got them on sale. Katie Tallon and Sonya Euksuzian always had to get the first 100 words in at the morning meetings. They love to talk. As for the so-called surf punks (Chris Wright, Dan Osley, and Mike Walker), it didn’t matter to them what the surf was like, every morning they came in and were like, “Yo Bryan - Phil, the surf is like 8 feet — it’s so good.” They talked like they were straight out of North Shore. They always made us laugh. Spencer Evans, on the other hand, used fudge to sway the instructor’s plans for the day insisting that we go paddleboarding. There are so many good memories and stories from this summer’s LIT sessions. In closing, I would like to thank my fellow instructors for a great summer. We worked extremely well together and got all of our goals accomplished. As for the LIT’s, I really enjoyed watching your confidence grow from the beginning of the summer until the last day. You guys made the summer extremely enjoyable for all of us. I’m really looking forward to seeing you guys either back in LIT or on the beach working as a LBTBP lifeguard. It’s been a real pleasure working with all of you and I hope next summer is half as much fun as this summer was. Thanks for all your cooperation and hard work.
Bryan Weber— LIT Director

The summer of 2001 marked big changes in the LIT Program. After five years as Director of the program, it was time for a change. I moved into an advisory position and made way for a new director and new instructors. Since most of my contact was with them, I think it’s about time for an article singing the praises of the LIT faculty. First off, Bryan Weber became the new director of the program. Last summer Bryan showed in-credible leadership and teaching ability. Knowing Bryan would be here for the summer of 2001 to lead the program, made my decision very easy. As a LIT, LIT Instructor and now LIT Director, we have a saying “Weber is the Best.”
Kara Della Torre as Co-Director ably assisted Bryan. Kara was an instructor back in 1998. She is an EMT, teacher and soon to be Medical Stu-dent. She brought a wealth of ocean knowledge to the program, and taught what I think is the most important lesson in LIT, spinal management. The other two instructors were Sara Spoviero and Phill Lloyd. In my opinion they had contrasting personalities that complemented their teaching styles. Sara is a quieter person, but she always got her point across and had the total respect of the LIT’s. Phill, the first Australian to become a LIT Instructor had so much ocean knowledge to share. It was great to be able to share his
knowledge and experience with kids an ocean away. So a torch was passed this year and I’m sure the LIT Program will be in great hands for many years to come. One final note: on the last day of LIT, we started the Surfing Expression Session. It proved to be so popular, that this year, even though we start surfing at 8:00am, Spencer Evans and Rob Muelheisen showed at 6:00am. Then Dan Osley and Mike Walker were there by 7:00am. It’s great to see all the LIT’s really wanting to show their ocean skills.

18th ANNUALMAYOR’S CUP
We started to stake out the tournament site promptly at five. Unsuspecting beach patrons were suddenly surrounded by fluorescent orange fences and multi-colored flags while music played through the sound system. By 5:45 the course was set , judges had been given the official 2001 Mayor’s Cup t-shirt and Beach Supervisor Don Myers was meeting with the first set of competitors.
The Mile Doubles Row would be the first race of the night. All five teams started in their own lane and headed south to a buoy a quarter-mile away. After rounding the southern turn they headed north to a second buoy, then back to their original
lanes to return to shore. First at their mark were Holgate rowers Harold Buck and Bill Galese, 19 and 15 year veterans of LBTBP respectively. They held the lead throughout the race to capture the gold twenty-seven seconds ahead of Crest Patrol’s Chris Josefowski and Rob Snyder. On the historic side, Tice Ryan who filled in for injured Jesse Adamiak, became the first Township guard to compete in Mayor’s Cup tournaments in four different decades.
The Women’s Paddle started while the Mile Doubles Row was in progress. Favored to win the race was Megan Martin of Loveladies/North Beach but Lindsey Gerkins of Spray Beach had other plans. Lindsey out-paddled the field to pull off the fabulous upset to take home the gold. Megan had to settle for silver and Australian Marina Four of Brant Beach captured the bronze.
The Crest Patrol’s Brian McKenna and Terry Dorman easily won the Buoy Rescue. In a close race for second place, Colleen Conway and Erick Sillitoe of Brant Beach edged Amy Vallebuona and Nathan Smith of Spray Beach by one second to take

home the silver. Amy and Nathan had to settle for the bronze.
Jeff Gutchigian of Holgate gave his team a huge lead after the opening leg of the Paddleboard Relay. Unfortunately, one Holgate paddler went off course and a fall on the exchange by another caused his team to drop into fourth place. In the end, the Loveladies/North Beach team of Tom Scangarello, Jack Dyer, Chris Burkhardt and Ken Burkhardt successfully defended their title from last year and won the gold.
Shannon Dries and Kara Della Torre of Holgate were favored to win the Women’s Doubles Row and they did not disappoint. They have a solid history of victories but did not compete together in the Mayor’s Cup the last two years because Kara did not guard enough hours to meet requirements for the Island Races. All the rowers in this event were expected to do well but the team from Brant Beach, Patty O’Hara and Mandy Gudknecht, managed to row their way to silver only seven seconds out of first.
Dave Lyall, Captain of Brant Beach, reached the mark first in the Surfboat Rescue,

giving Erik Svensen an early launch. The team of Mark Barone and Shawn Corson of Holgate currently in second place were in hot pursuit. Dave had some problems getting into the boat which allowed Shawn and Mark to close the gap between them and the Brant Beach team. For a moment it looked like the Holgate team might prevail when Brant Beach began to drift north, but Erik and Dave managed to hold on to their lead and win the gold. Shawn and Mark finished second with Jon Logan and Josh Wall of Beach Haven Crest finishing third.
Most of Township’s best women paddlers were spread out across the five teams in the Women’s Paddle Relay, but Marina Four and Melissa Leonetti of Brant Beach had the strongest teamwork. In the past Megan Martin of Loveladies/North Beach has been able to overcome any spread left by her partner but this time she had to settle for fourth place.
This year, the Iron Man event was missing the top three finishers from last year—Mike Vile, Brian McKenna and Dan Avondoglio. Mike and Dan were top three
finishers for many years and Brian proved himself to be a worthy competitor last year with a second place finish. Gary Jones was the only repeater—he placed fourth last year. Three of the new contenders were Australians—who are all strong swimmers, paddlers and runners but not necessarily well rehearsed in rowing. It appeared that the results would be determined by the athlete who could complete the best row. After the run, swim and paddle, Mark Seymour (Spray Beach) was the first to be launched, followed closely by Brett Carter (Beach Haven Crest) and Michael James (Holgate). Mark maintained his lead through the turn but Michael was the only rower to completely turn for a straight line towards the finish. Mark and Brett headed slightly north on the return and when they were hit by a couple of waves, Mark breeched on the second wave and ended up near the jetty. Michael continued on a straight path to capture the title while Mark emerged from the surf far north and had a long run to second place. Only seventeen seconds separated first and third. Gary Jones (Brant Beach) repeated his fourth place and Tom Manzo (Loveladies/North Beach) was fifth.

The second night of the Mayor’s Cup Tournament began with the 1000’ Doubles row. The most experienced rowers in the line-up were Keith Svensen and Lou Ferrante of Brant Beach. The most promising pair was Josh Bligh and Bill Post of Spray Beach— who placed second in the Art Jocher Cup last year and won the Mile Bay Doubles Row this year. But when the whitewater settled, it was the team of Jim Portale and Andy Baxter from Loveladies/North Beach, who prevailed. Keith and Lou had to settle for second and Josh and Bill placed third.
The Open Swim and the Women’s Swim were held simultaneously with the open swim on the north side and the Women’s Swim to the south. Terry Dorman of Beach Haven Crest was the victor with a time of 4:40, followed by the first place finisher in the women’s division, Colleen Conway of Brant Beach with a time of 4:49. Mark Barone of Holgate crossed the finish next in 4:53 for silver in the open with his sister, Laura Barone five seconds behind for the women’s silver. Four seconds later Amy Vallebuona , who won this event the last two years, crossed the finish for women’s bronze and seven seconds later Brendan Craig (Spray Beach) took
the Open bronze.
Jeff Gutchigian, the Holgate Captain, was the first to reach his “victim”, Jared Neyer in the Paddle Rescue. Unfortunately, they were in the southernmost lane where there was absolutely no surf. While the Holgate team had to paddle the whole way back to shore, the other teams in the northern lanes were able to take advantage of some swells. Phill Lloyd and Jeff Baldino took the gold with a time of 2:29. Only one second separated silver and bronze and it took a meeting of the judges to de-termine the finish. They ruled that Ryan Carberry and Brandon Kaletkowski pulled their boards across the line before Tom Scangarello and Mike Dancha.
All expectations in the Line Pull event were for a close race between Spray Beach, Beach Haven Crest and Brant Beach. Adam Angelozzi and Mark Seymour of Spray Beach who were on the winining team last year, teamed up with Paul Tipping. The Beach Haven Crest team of Brian McKenna and Leigh Haydon who won in 1999 added Jeff Sheldon to their combination. Brian McKenna reached the mark first as

expected followed ten seconds later by Dave Lyall. Mark Seymour touched the buoy about ten seconds after Dave. Brian’s backstroke dolphin kick helped his teammates pull him to a first place finish. Dave’s pullers, Jay Brower and Nick Fiore managed to hold second place while Spray Beach had to settle for third.
All five of the contestants in the Singles Row are well-respected rowers and all of them turned in a fabulous performance. In fact, only six seconds separated first from third place and fourth and fifth were only seconds behind. Their order of finish was: Keith Svensen (Brant Beach), Chris Josefowski (Crest), Bill Galese (Holgate), Jim Portale (Loveladies/North Beach) and Bill Post (Spray Beach).
Brett Carter and Katie Osley (Crest) won the Mixed Paddle rescue with ten seconds
to spare over Michael James and Sara Sproviero (Holgate). Four seconds later Jon Campise and Jane Daly (Spray Beach) placed third. This was the first time in six events that Crest was first in the team standings— they had been trailing Brant Beach for most of the second night.
The team to watch in the Mixed Doubles Row was Erik Svensen and Patty O’Hara (Brant Beach), and Harold Buck and Shannon Dries (Holgate). Harold and Shannon made their turn first but had to row all the way to shore due to a lack of surf in their lane. Erik and Patty as well as Julie Vierzchalek and Lance Purvis (Loveladies/North Beach) were able to capitalize on the waves in their lanes and take the lead. Erik and Patty won, putting Brant Beach back in first overall. Julie and Lance captured the silver while Harold and Shannon took the bronze.

Usually the winners of the Mayor’s Cup are known before the last race but in this tournament Brant Beach and Crest traded first place several times and either team could win the “Cup” depending on the 1500’ Paddle. If Crest won and Brant Beach came in third, the scores would be tied, in which case the number of first place finishes would be the tie-breaker and Crest would win. Phil Lloyd (Crest) was favored to win and he did it in 2:37. The surprise came when Steve Campoli came in second, beating Jack Dyer (Loveladies/North Beach) by nine seconds. Steve’s second place clinched the win for Brant Beach.

40th ANNUAL LBIBPA LIFEGUARD
TOURNAMENT
team capt. dave lyall
mile row medalists women’s paddle medalists
After some confusion over the location of the tourna-ment and a postponement due to severe thunderstorm warnings, the LBIBPA Lifeguard Tournament was hosted by the Barnegat Light Beach Patrol at 22nd Street in Barnegat Light on August 14th and 15th.
The tournament began with the mile row. All six teams were launched and headed to their own lane marks where they rounded on the south side and headed
north for the first large buoy. Harold Buck and Bill Galese were heading toward the first Township gold of the evening. Ship Bottom cap-tured the silver and Beach Haven’s third place earned them the bronze.
The Women’s Paddle took place during the Mile Dou-bles Row. Megan Martin
had a strong start and maintained her lead all the way through the race ending with a forty-two second lead. Harvey Cedars and Barnegat Light came in second and third respectively.
Everyone expected Brian McKenna to reach his “victim” ahead of the other swimmers in the Buoy Rescue and he did not disappoint. He and Terry Dor-man returned to shore a half-minute ahead of second
place Barnegat Light. Surf City crossed the finish third to take the bronze.
The Paddle Relay started off very competitively. Jack Dyer and brothers Chris and Ken Burkhardt managed to set up Tom Scangarello for the winning anchor leg. Tom was leading when he caught a wave and stood up for a spectacular ride to the Township’s fourth gold medal of the night. The team from Barnegat Light finished more than a minute later for second place. Surf City went on to finish third.
Shannon Dries and Kara Della Torre were assigned to one of the southern lanes for the Women’s Doubles Row. They had a difficult launch and took on some water. Meanwhile, the team from Barnegat Light was faring better in the northern lane. At one point it looked like Shannon and Kara might have to settle for third place but they managed to finish ahead of Ship Bottom and grab the silver.

Team Captain Dave Lyall reached the buoy first in the Surfboat Rescue but Chris Josefowski was launched into a huge set of waves in the southernmost lane. He was hit so hard that he became airborne and was knocked off of his seat. When he finally recovered, he had a boat full of water. Chris and Dave still managed to pull a third place finish only fourteen seconds behind first place Barnegat Light. The team from Harvey Cedars finished second.
The Iron Man was the final race of the night. Michael James maintained first place through the run and swim, and opened up enough of a lead during the paddle to hold on through the row. He became Long Beach Island’s new Iron Man and earned the fifth gold for LBTBP.
The second night of competition began with the 1000’ Doubles Row. Barnegat Light’s team was the same duo who won this event last year and they successfully defended their title. Ship Bottom and Surf City placed second and third respectively. Andy Baxter and Jon Logan of Long Beach Township finished fourth.
The Open Swim and the Women’s Swim were held simultaneously with the women rounding southern buoys and the open group starting and finishing on the northern side. Brett Carter trailed the Barnegat Light swimmer by only seven seconds in the Open Swim to take the silver. Harvey Cedars crossed the line twenty-six seconds later. On the south side, Colleen Conway was having trouble finding the mark in
the high surf. She trailed Beach Haven and Barnegat Light all the way to shore but managed to outrun the Barnegat Light swimmer by one second for the silver.
Jeff Gutchigian was paired with Jeff Baldino to make up the Islands duo for the Paddle Rescue. Jeff and Jeff turned out to be a winning combination taking the gold eight seconds ahead of Barnegat Light and a half-minute ahead of Harvey Cedars.
The winners in the Mayor’s Cup Line Pull were the team from the Crest Patrol but their swimmer, Brian McKenna, had also won the buoy rescue, which he chose as his one event for the Islands. That left Leigh Haydon and Jeff Sheldon without a swimmer. Second place swimmer Dave Lyall chose to compete in the Surfboat Rescue so Mark Seymour was chosen to fill the slot. He proved to be the right man for the job, reaching the mark first and giving his pullers a head start on the return. Leigh and Jeff pulled Mark across the finish in three minutes flat for the gold. Silver and bronze went to Barnegat Light and Beach Haven respectively.
Keith Svensen set out to unseat the defending champion from Barnegat Light in the singles row and for a short time it looked like he would succeed, but he caught a huge wave on the return and breached while the Barnegat Light rower closed in on the finish. Barnegat Light and Harvey Cedars crossed the finish line within one second of each other for gold and silver. Six seconds later Keith came in for the

bronze. At that point Barnegat Light could only win the tournament if they scored the next three gold medals.
Erik Svensen and Patty O’Hara were a perfectly paired Mixed Doubles team and proved their power with sixteen seconds to spare. In a spectacular finish, they rode a wave and while Patty balanced the stern, Erik stood in the boat and waved his hands in the air before jumping out for the finish line. Four teams crossed the line in less than three seconds and the judges had to convene for several minutes to sort out the finish. In the end, Ship Bottom and Surf City took silver and bronze. The boat from Barnegat Light placed fifth and their chance for a Tournament vic-tory was shattered.
In the 1500’ Foot Paddle, Phill Lloyd’s four second lead for the victory put the Town-ship score over 100 and gave us enough of a lead that we could win the tournament without even competing in the last race.
This was the first time we saw an all-female team entered in the Surf Dash Relay—from Harvey Cedars. The Barnegat Light team took an early lead and never let it go. Mike Medaglia, Josh Wall and Mark Barone pushed them all the way and finished only six seconds behind for the silver followed by the team from Surf City.
