Commodore’s Comments
A s the new year begins there are many
changes on the horizon. Gil and I are honored and proud to be at the helm of Portland Yacht Club in 2012. We look forward to working with the Board and membership on the many events and projects during the year. We want to thank Rod and Judy Wells for their dedication and service during the past year and appreciate their con-tributions for a successful year in 2011. Perhaps the biggest change for the new year will come with Manager Fred Carter's retirement this month and the hiring of a new club manager. Fred has served as manager for thirteen years and has been instrumental in the suc-cess of PYC. Please plan on attending the cookout on Friday, January 27th as the club recognizes his service, contri-butions and friendship. The search committee, headed by Past Commo-dore Nick Johnson, is in the process of reviewing the multiple applicants and plans to recommend candidates to the Board in the next few weeks. On behalf of the membership I would also like to give special thanks to out-going Board members Rear Commo-dore Nick Johnson and Trustee Julie Hinkley. Thank you for your time, ef-forts and service. Joining the Board in 2012 are Trustee Gerry Gregg and Trustee Tom Winslow. Larry Cirotski will be Vice Commodore, Rod Wells Rear Commodore and Chris Dorn moves into the Secretary-Treasurer position. Returning Trustees are Frank Bocarde, Michael Hahn and Brian Hedges. This group will bring skills, expertise, and enthusiasm to the Board and will work to ensure the club con-tinues to stay on course. The Annual Meeting in late November was well attended. The membership approved minor changes to the Bylaws and the 2012 budget. The work put into the 2012 budget was strenuous but met the goals set forth by the Executive
Board and Finance Committee. This year’s budget was finalized without the inclusion of the annual standard 3.5% increase to moorage fees. Also, during the budgeting process the group ad-dressed the increased bank charges, which are largely the result of credit card fees for monthly membership pay-ments. The incoming Board will con-sider the options and set forth new procedures to limit these expenses. The funds spent on bank charges can be better spent on future clubhouse and moorage improvements. Thanks to Finance Chair Mark Newsom, Commo-dore Rod Wells and Manager Fred Carter for their diligence and good work on establishing the financial strat-egy for 2012 and coming years. In addition to the budget approval the membership heard committee reports at the meeting. The numerous reports from members who volunteer their time and skills for the club reminds us of how many members are involved in making this club function. PYC is truly a volunteer based organization and I encourage all of the members to get involved. Become an active participant in “your” club. The yearly club awards were announced at the Annual Meeting. Commodore Wells presented the Larry Barber Mem-ber of the Year trophy to Laura Mack for her efforts and culinary talents at many events and cruises during the year. The less prestigious Boners Award was presented to Doug Foster and Diane Burns for their gas dock incident. Apparently their boat, Mon-key Bar, did not want to wait for fuel before going cruising. December, as always, was a busy month of holiday events and activities. The Entertainment Committee and First Mate Judy Wells held a wonderful Ladies Holiday Party “Diamonds in Sky” which featured the Grant High School choir, diamond jewelry door prizes and the crowning of the 2012 Daughter of Neptune Helen Hansen. The Children's Holiday party, Christ-mas Ships Cookout and the well at-tended Holiday Open House followed. The 2012 Entertainment Committee,

with chair Samantha Dubay, is well underway with the planning of events for the coming year. The Long Range Committee will con-tinue to review and update the master plan, including incorporating the Open Moorage Design Committee's recom-mendations. An engineering study of the proposal will be the next step in the moorage design and planning process. As Eric Gazow and Tom Stringfield step down from leading the Moorage Upgrade Committee, Dick Dyer will be stepping up to the role of committee chair. Eric and Tom will no doubt continue to offer their expertise and background as consultants to the com-mittee. Thank you both, Eric and Tom, for your many years of leading the Moorage Upgrade team. The Technology Committee was formed last year and was very busy with the research and selection of the club's new administrative accounting system. The conversion to the new system is targeted for the first quarter of this year. Once the new billing system is in place, the group will focus on the point of sale applications and other improve-

Manager’s Report
W ow, it just occurred to me that this
will be my last report. As I look back, thirteen years have gone by very quickly. I not only think of you as members but also as my friends. While some of you think that it will never be the same without me, I take pride in the fact that as we exit 2011, PYC is strong and it will be here in an-other 100 years. My time at PYC has been wonderful, and it has been a good run for me. It’s a good time to hand over the reins to someone with new skills and ideas. As I write this, the search committee has been interviewing candidates. They are optimistic that we will find a qualified replacement. I wish all of you success and happiness. Fair winds.

ments. The group will also work to-gether with the Security Chair, House and Grounds and the Cub Manager on the security upgrade proposals and in-stallation. Mark Newsom and Brian Hedges will be joined by Steve Gordon, Tom Keffer and Xavier LeHericy. Members can also look forward to see-ing upgrades to the club's website in the next months, too. Real-time weather, interactive features and web cameras are a few of the changes which will be implemented on the site. Dale Mack will continue to serve as Portlight editor for a fourth year. He will be creating a unique version of the monthly publication, which will include more pages in full color, for online viewing on the club's website. A new opt-out will be made available to mem-bers who wish to stop receiving the printed version in their mailbox. This will save the club money on both print-ing and postage costs. Details on how to sign-up for this option are in this issue. Dredging at the Willow Bar Outstation is scheduled for early January. Outsta-tion Co-Chair Phil Gentemann will be the project manager. The club office will communicate any closures of the facility to members in the weekly email bulletin. The Outstation is one of the club's most valuable assets and many improvements were done in 2011, the result of member's efforts. Mark your calendars now to join fellow members on March 3rd for the annual Outstation Clean Up. New this year will be a general moorage Clean Up day on April 21st led by the Moorage Chairs Larry Citroski and Chris Dorn. Grab your power washer and join your row mates on that date as well. A list of the 2012 committees is in-cluded in this issue of the Portlight. There are many newer PYC members that have volunteered to serve on com-mittees for the coming year. The best way to get to know your fellow PYC members and join in on the fun of the variety of club activities is to volunteer.
(Continued from page 2)
If you would like to participate, please don't hesitate to contact the chair, or either Gil or myself. You will notice that we are still in need of Cruising Chairs. Please consider volunteering for one of the upcoming cruises during the year. Roger Jorgensen will be coor-dinating the bi-annual Barkley Sound cruise and the dates and details will be published when confirmed. The 2012 PYC calendar has been pub-lished and is available in the club office. Terry Johnson has assembled an attrac-tive set of photos and some new events have been added to this year's schedule. One of the new events will be the Leu-kemia Cup Regatta in June. Details will follow in future Portlights. As PYC sets a new course for the com-ing year we are eager to embrace the changes that come with any new year. We encourage all members to partici-pate in events, use our great facilities and enjoy the companionship of fellow PYC members.

2012 Daughter of Neptune Helen Hansen
T he 2012 PYC Daughter of Neptune, Helen Hansen was crowned at the Ladies Holiday Dinner in De-cember. Helen is a freshman at Jesuit High School
and previously attended the Arts & Communications Magnet Academy. Her interests include dancing, tap, jazz and ballet, with ballet being her favorite. She has also attended the Portland Ballet Summer Intensive program. She performs in the choir for both school and church. Helen is the daughter of Bob & Debra Hansen, granddaugh-ter of Ray Hansen, niece of Jim and Sandi Hansen, all PYC members. Helen states that “Since I was a little girl, I would look at all the pictures in the ballroom and dream of some day being the Daughter of Neptune. I am a fourth generation Port-land Yacht Club person. When I was little, my dad would bring me to the crab feed breakfast, then we would go get the crab and then I would help set-up for the crab feed. We have continued this tradition and I look forward to this each year. I feel like I have grown up at PYC. I have so many special memories of events at the club. Being on the river with family and friends is something I enjoy.” The Daughters of Neptune organization began 58 years ago in 1954 when four young women greeted the opening day fleet on board the US Coast Guard cutter Bluebell.
During the nearly six past decades many young women have proudly represented the Portland Yacht Club. Their role has evolved from serving as nautical princesses to a role of safe boating ambassadors, focusing on the use of life jackets. The organization has partnered with the Oregon State Ma-rine Board and the Multnomah County Sheriff river patrol at events including the Portland Boat Show, Kids Fest and Portland Rose Festival. As spokespersons for the water safety awareness program these young ladies learn important safety information which they are encouraged to share.

Go Green by Going Digital PYC offers Opt-Out for Portlight
A n increasing number of members are switching to the online copy of the Portlight. Aside from being in full color and typically available around the 25th
of each month, the digital version of the Portlight will carry more content, especially photos, in 2012 than the hardcopy version. This growing trend toward the digital edition pro-vides you an opportunity to help the club save money. For members wishing to discontinue receiving the monthly PYC Portlight in the mail, the process is simple. Email the club and request to be removed from the hardcopy distribu-tion list. Your mailing address will be deleted from the mail-ing list, and in its place you'll receive a monthly email notifi-cation when the PDF version of the Portlight is available for viewing on the club's website. Include “Portlight Opt-Out” in the subject line of the email, too.
