My goal is to help students make sense of mathematics and learn that they can be mathematical thinkers.

Old-Style Math vs. The New and Improved Style

• Students working alone

• Focused on getting the right answer

•Students work individually, with partners, in small groups or as a whole class.

•Considers the child’s reasoning and thought process that leads to the answer!

•Answers recorded by writing down numbers.

•Complete as many problems as quickly as possible.

•Encourages children to explain their thinking orally, in writing, and by using pictures, diagrams, and models.

•Thoughtfully working on a small number of problems during a class session that incorporate a variety of concepts.

•Tedious and the dreaded red pen

•Use a single formula or algorithm to solve a problem.

•Hands-on, active, engaging, fun

•Use more than one strategy to solve a problem and double-check.

•Use only pencil and paper.

•Allows students to use cubes, blocks, tiles, and measuring tools to help them solve problems in ways that make sense to them.
