Food Services Staff

The Five Steps of TrainingThe five basic steps to good teaching/training are:

•Tell• Show• Try • Observe• Praise or Redirect

The Five Steps of TrainingThe First Step – Tell

•A manager must tell a person specifically what it is he/she is to achieve•All good performance begins with clear goals. •These goals should include a statement which defines what it is a person is to accomplish

The Five Steps of TrainingThe Second Step – Show

•A manager sets standards. It’s one thing to tell people what you want, but another to provide them with a clear picture of how to perform the task•With this second step of Show, staff need to have a series of stages or steps to get people to deliver good performance

The Third Step – Try

•Assign one task at a time to the employees•Employees may be overwhelmed with many tasks•Allow employees to learn and grow

The Five Steps of TrainingThe Fourth Step - Observe Performance

•It’s necessary to observe trainees closely throughout the training process•The trainer will observe and provide feedback as needed•Allow trainee to practice

The Five Steps of TrainingThe Fifth Step - Praising and/or Redirect

There are two parts of this last step, since there are two potential outcomes to the efforts of any trainee•If they do a good job, you praise to motivate•If the trainee needs help, redirect with positive reinforcement

The Five Steps of TrainingManager will praise worker’s efforts or they will retrain
