DEAR ABBY: I'm mar-ried to the love of my life.My wife is a beautifulwoman, 50 years old, ingreat shape and she looks 35.My problem is whenever wego out, if I ask her to wearsomething sexy for me, shealways says, "I'm too old todress like that" and refuses. However, when she dressesfor work, she spends hourson her appearance and dress-es very sexy.
I have told her it bothersme, but she says I'm beingsilly and she just wants tolook good for her manage-ment job. She's constantlybuying new outfits for work. This morning she left wear-ing a sexy short miniskirtand boots.
She is an independentwoman who does what shewants. I don't spend my timetrying to control her by anymeans. I trust her and seri-ously doubt there's anotherman. But I feel this is a mat-ter of her not respecting myfeelings as her husband. AmI wrong? Is there somethingelse going on here? I needyour help.
-- LIKES HER SEXY INCONNECTICUT
DEAR LIKES HERSEXY: There's somethingsad about the fact that yourwife doesn't want to put thesame amount of effort intolooking as good when shegoes out with you as shedoes when she leaves forwork. Rather than turningthis into a power struggle, the next time you want totake her out looking sexy, ask her to just "throw onsomething she would wear tothe office" and see if youhave better luck.
DEAR ABBY:You onceprinted a letter from a manwho was dying. He wantedhis surviving widow to pur-sue happiness after his deathwith some man who wouldbe kind to her. The letter wasmainly addressed to thosewho might stand in judgmentif she began dating soonafter he was gone.
Abby, is there a rule ofthumb about how long thewidow or widower shouldwait after the death of thespouse to begin pursuinganother relationship?-- LONELY IN GADSDEN,
ALA.
DEAR LONELY: Therewas a time when it was con-sidered scandalous for awidow or widower to datebefore a year of mourninghad passed. However, todaythe grieving spouse maybegin to date whenever he orshe feels ready to do so.
The letter you rememberwas signed "'Mac' inOregon," and it bears repeat-ing. Read on:
DEAR ABBY: Thankyou for supporting thewidow who started datingthree months after her hus-band died. You were rightwhen you told her, "The timeto show respect for one'sspouse is while that spouseis living."
Here is my story, andthere must be a few thousandhusbands (and wives) whofeel the same as I do.
My wife and I have hadmany good years together. We raised kids, lived throughjoyous good times and hor-rendous bad times.
I am in my 18th month ofchemo treatment for variouscancers. I may live threemonths or five years. It does-n't matter how short or howlong my life will be, but it'sreasonable to assume that Iwill die before my wife does.
I have had a more reward-ing and fruitful life than Iprobably deserve, for whichI am grateful. But the day Idie, my last thoughts will beregret that I shall leave heralone. So sad, to me, toknow that after so manymonths of total concentrationon my welfare -- days of put-ting up with my misery andnever letting me see her ownmisery -- her reward will beto be left alone.
Abby, she is not the kindof person who should be leftalone.
So I tell her now, and Iwant all my kids and friendsto listen: "As soon as youpossibly can, after throwingmy ashes off the boat intothe Pacific, wrap the memo-ries of our life togetheraround you -- and begin anew life. If three days, orthree months, after I'm gone, you find a man who willlove and cherish you for afew years as I have for somany, go for it! You'veearned it."
-- "MAC" IN OREGON
DEAR MAC: Your sin-cerity rings true, leaving meuncharacteristically speech-less. Thanks for a two-han-kie letter.
DEAR ABBY: Mygranddaughter is due to havea baby in a short while. Shewants to have a baby showerand would like to invite hergirlfriends with their hus-bands or boyfriends.
I always thought thatbaby showers were forfemales only. What is youropinion?-- WONDERING GRAND-
MOTHER
DEAR WONDERING:Times have changed. Babyshowers now often includemen and take place on aweekend afternoon, prefer-ably not on the same day asa major sports event.
One thing that hasn'tchanged, however: A babyshower is usually hosted byfriends of the parents-to-be,rather than family.

My husband and I love to take longdrives in the surrounding areas tocheck the crops. The soaring tempera-tures have certainly put stress oneverything and we all are hoping forcooler weather and some rain. I contin-ue to water my tomatoes, cucumbersand squash every other day. The plantsin the perennial bed are looking verythirsty. I try not to look their way as Icarry water to the petunias plantedclose by.
We headed to Cowan Lake earlythis morning to Kayak among the lotusblooms for a few hours. As weapproached the lake we noticed thefamiliar bloom of the Chicory plantlining both sides of the road. When Iarrived home I headed to my favoritewildflower reference book,Wildflowers of Ohio, written by StanTekiela. My husband quickly com-mented, “Wildflower? Isn’t that aweed?” Tekiela’s information forChicory (Cichorium intybus) includes:
Family: Aster (Asteraccae) Height: 1-4 FeetFlower: Stalkless sky blue flowers,
11/4 inches wide, each with up to 20petals (ray flowers); flowers sparselypopulate a tall stem and close by earlyafternoon; petals (ray flower) aresquare-tipped and fringed; colorranges from white to pink, dependingupon age and location
Leaf: long, toothed basal leaves, 3-6 inches long, similar to dandelionleaves; stem leaves are oblong andmuch smaller, ½-1 inch long, lackteeth and clasp the stem
Bloom: summer, fallCycle/Origin: perennial, non-native
Habitat: dry, sun, along roads, openfields
Range: throughout
Also known as Blue Sailor orRagged Sailor, its few flowers openone at a time and last only one day. This European import, believed tocome from Eurasia, was brought to theUnited States to be cultivated for itslong taproot, which can be roasted andground as a coffee substitute or addi-tive. Its edible leaves, like dandelionleaves, are high in vitamins and miner-als, but taste quite bitter. Have youtried Chicory “coffee”? I have to admitthat it is not at the top of my list to tryagain!
I’m sure some of you are wonderinghow Chiggers fit into this story. Whenwe unload our kayaks by the boatramp, you have to walk in the grassyarea by the lake. I am basically a chig-ger “magnet”! Ohio State UniversityExtension’s Fact Sheet, HYG-2100-98,shares that there is probably no crea-ture on earth that can cause as muchtorment for its size than the tiny chig-ger. Tiny six-legged chigger larvaeattack campers, hikers, bird watchers, berry pickers, fisherman, picnickers, and homeowners in low, damp areaswhere vegetation is rank such as wood-lands, berry patches, orchards, alonglakes and streams, and even in driersplaces where vegetation is low such aslawns, golf courses, and parks.
Contrary to popular belief, chiggersdo not burrow into the skin. Instead, they stay on the surface of the skin andcrawl to the base of a hair follicle tofeed. Once settled, the larva injects theskin with digestive fluids using itspiercing, sucking mouthparts (capitu-lum), and then they ingest the resulting“cell puree.” Some people are highlysensitive to the chigger’s feeding activ-ity, and their skin will swell and sur-round the larva. This often kills the
chigger, and the dead larva found with-in the swollen skin gives rise to themisconception that chiggers burrowinto the skin.
Chiggers are usually associatedwith spring and early summer; howev-er, they can undergo three generationsper year in warm climates. To avoidbeing the victim of chiggers, avoidwalking through brushy areas or wearlong white pants with the socks pulledover the pant legs (quite the fashionstatement, don’t you think?). Insectrepellents such as DEET can help toward off chiggers. Apply repellent toboth the skin and clothing, especiallyto clothing openings at cuffs, neck, waistband and upper edges of socks.Follow all directions carefully. It takesseveral hours for the chiggers to settle,so bathing immediately after hiking inweedy areas can significantly reducethe number of bites. Calamine lotionand similar products will help toreduce itching and the risk for subse-quent skin infections.
Insecticides can be sprayed to con-trol chiggers. For the best results, tar-get areas where chiggers are most like-ly to converge, such as fence rows andgarden edges where shrubbery isdense. OSUE Fact Sheet HYG-2100-98 gives several options for controlthat include: outdoor sprays of chlor-pyrifos (Dursban), carbaryl (Sevin) ordiazinon. Before using any pesticide, always read the label and follow direc-tions and safety precautions.
The bottom line for me and otherchigger “magnets” is to be pro-activeand use a repellent before you head outto enjoy the outdoors!

INLAYS AND ONLAYSAmong the cosmetic dentistryprocedures that providerestorative benefits are inlaysand onlays made from porce-lain or composite materials.Dental inlays are used to treatteeth with decay within theirindented top surfaces. Onlaysare used to treat decay or dam-age that extends to one or moretooth cusps. Both restorationsusually require two appoint-ments. One involves taking animpression and placement of atemporary inlay or onlay in orover the toolh. Once the inlay oronlay comes back from the lab, where the impression was usedto create the restoration, it iscemented in place. Not only doinlays and onlays require lesstooth reduction than a crown, they are durable enough to lastup to three decades.
Our entire staff at CLARKFAMILY DENTISTRY encour-ages your questions aboutcomprehensive dental care. Wesupply superior oral health carefor the entire family. Foranswers to your oral healthissue questions we invite you tocall our office at 937.393.3494.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Daniel Radcliffe, 23; Marlon Wayans, 40; Philip Seymour Hoffman, 45; Woody Harrelson, 51.HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Learn from mistakes and take care of personal business before some-one asks for something you've neglected to do. You will feel liberated and ready to try new endeavors if you don't have so much on your to-do list. Changes to your personal life can be expected. Accept the inevitable. Your numbers are 8, 17, 22, 24, 36, 45, 48.ARIES (March 21-April 19): Prepare for what's to come. Sitting at home and missing out on an event because you don't feel up to it will be your loss. Seize the moment and embrace whatever is being offered. Partnerships, progress and pros-perity are all attainable. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You may have found a bargain, but before you make a purchase, do your research and check your motives. The vendor may be misleading you, or you may be trying to impress someone with what you have. Focus on work, not pleasures. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Opt to wait when it comes to altering your surroundings or updating your image. You aren't likely to love the results you get if you rush into something without doing enough research. Gullibility will leave you in a vulnerable position. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Spend time with family or your lover. Remembering the past will help you make wiser choic-es. Decisions should be based on what works for you personally, even if that means altering other aspects of your life. Don't defer; voice your opinion. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Everything will depend on what you do and how well you do it. Being a team player will allow you to win favors and support. Alterations at home will stabi-lize your personal life. Someone from your past will help you now. Love is highlighted. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Too much said and not enough done will lead to complaints. Emotions will be difficult to control. You are best to do what-ever chores you have so you can move on to bigger and better opportunities. Time management will be essential to advance. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Now is your time to explore new avenues and make changes that will bring you one step closer to your dreams, hopes and wishes. Reunite with someone from your past who you feel has something to offer you now. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Don't be too quick to make changes at home that may be costly. Use common sense, or you may end up stuck with something that doesn't fit your lifestyle or your plans for the future. Good fortune comes from helping yourself. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Listen carefully and size up a situation before you retaliate. It'll be best to let your actions be your voice. Take care of whatev-er responsibilities you've taken on before someone makes you look bad. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don't make promises you cannot keep. Someone will try to coerce you into doing some-thing that doesn't really suit your
skills. Contain your temper and don't vent your frustration on loved ones or anyone who can affect your future. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): This is a good day to sign con-tracts, formulate deals or move forward with a self-improve-ment project that will make your life better. Property deals or making a move will be benefi-cial. Romance will enhance your love life.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A partnership may terminate if you don't compromise or at least listen to complaints. Weigh the pros and cons of your current situation to discover what you must aban-don in order to do what suits you best. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are detailed, versatile and sophis-ticated. You have an entrepre-neurial attitude.
