Greeting: The Lord be with you.

AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: As he went ashore, Jesus saw a great crowd; and he had

compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd;

and he began to teach them many things. Mark 6.34

Prayer of Preparation:

As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration

of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the

Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your

mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first

commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as

yourself.’

Kyrie eleison:

Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy

Christ have mercy: R/: Christ have mercy

Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy

The Gloria

Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to God’s people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King,

almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks,

we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world:

have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father:

receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High

Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Eternal God,

author of our life and end of our pilgrimage:

guide us by your word and Spirit

amid all perils and temptations,

that we may not wander from your way,

but may run our course in safety

until we come to our eternal rest in you;

through the grace of Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: 2 SAMUEL 7.1-14

1Now when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest

from all his enemies around him, 2the king said to the prophet Nathan, ‘See

now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a

tent.’ 3Nathan said to the king, ‘Go, do all that you have in mind; for the

Lord is with you.’ 4But that same night the word of the Lord came to

Nathan: 5Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord : Are you the one

to build me a house to live in? 6I have not lived in a house since the day I

brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving

about in a tent and a tabernacle. 7Wherever I have moved about among all

the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of

Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have

you not built me a house of cedar?’ 8Now therefore thus you shall say to my

servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from

following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; 9and I have been with

you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you;

and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the

earth. 10

And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so

that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers

shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11

from the time that I appointed

judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies.

Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a

house. 12

When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I

will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body,

and I will establish his kingdom. 13

He shall build a house for my name, and I

will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14

I will be a father to him,

and he shall be a son to me. When he commits iniquity, I will punish him with

a rod such as mortals use, with blows inflicted by human beings.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 89.21-30

21 ‘I have found my servant David:

and anointed him with my holy oil.

22 ‘My hand shall uphold him:

and my arm shall strengthen him.

23 ‘No enemy shall deceive him:

nor shall the wicked hurt him.

24 ‘I will crush his adversaries before him:

and strike down those that hate him.

25 ‘My faithfulness and loving-kindness shall be with him:

and through my name his head shall be lifted high.

26 ‘I will set the hand of his dominion upon the Western Sea:

and his right hand shall stretch to the streams of Mesopotamia.

27 ‘He will call to me “You are my Father:

my God, and the rock of my salvation.”

28 ‘I will make him my first-born son:

and highest among the kings of the earth.

29 ‘I will ever maintain my loving-kindness toward him:

and my covenant with him shall stand firm.

30 ‘I will establish his line for ever:

and his throne like the days of heaven.

Second Reading: EPHESIANS 2.11-22

11Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called

‘uncircumcised’ by those who call themselves ‘the circumcision’ (which is done

in the body by human hands) – 12

remember that at that time you were

separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the

covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13

But

now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by

the blood of Christ. 14

For he himself is our peace, who has made the two

groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15

by

setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His

purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus

making peace, 16

and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through

the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17

He came and preached

peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18

For

Page 6: HTK Pew Sheet, 8am, July 22, 2012

6

through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. 19

Consequently,

you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s

people and also members of his household, 20

built on the foundation of the

apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21

In

him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in

the Lord. 22

And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling

in which God lives by his Spirit.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet

our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 6

beginning at the 30th

verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

30

The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and

taught. 31

He said to them, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves

and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure

even to eat. 32

And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by

themselves. 33

Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they

hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. 34

As he

went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because

they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many

things. 53

When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and

moored the boat. 54

When they got out of the boat, people at once

recognized him, 55

and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the

sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56

And wherever he went, into

villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the market-places, and begged

him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it

were healed.

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON followed by a short time for reflection

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God,

the Father, the almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Page 9: HTK Pew Sheet, 8am, July 22, 2012

9

Jesus said: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another,

even as I have loved you. John 13.34

[Let us pray]

We do not presume to come to your table,

merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness,

but in your manifold and great mercies.

We are not worthy

so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table.

But you are the same Lord

whose nature is always to have mercy.

Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord,

so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ,

and to drink his blood,

that we may evermore dwell in him,

and he in us. Amen.

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's

forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

and in what we have failed to do:

we have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;

we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

Father, forgive us.

Strengthen us to love and obey you

in newness of life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
