Hymn: TiS 273
1. Lo! he comes with clouds
descending,
once for favoured sinners slain;
thousand thousand saints attending
swell the sound of this refrain:
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
hallelujah!
God appears on earth to reign.
2. Every eye shall now behold him
robed in awesome majesty;
those who have betrayed and sold
him,
pierced and nailed him to the tree,
deeply shamed before him, deeply
shamed before him,
deeply shamed before him
shall the true Messiah see.
3. Those dear tokens of his passion
still his dazzling body bears,
cause of endless exultation
to his ransomed worshippers:
with what rapture, with what
rapture,
with what rapture
gaze we on those glorious scars!
4. Sing amen! let all adore you,
high on your eternal throne;
Saviour, take the power and glory,
claim the kingdom for your own;
O come quickly, O come quickly,
O come quickly;
hallelujah! Come, Lord, come.
3
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation
through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore encourage one another and build
up each other. 1 Thessalonians 5.9, 11
Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as
yourself.’
4
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us.
Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution {Celebrant}
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him
in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen
you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

Gloria – Ushaw Setting (Alan Rees)
CHOIR: Glory, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest,
ALL:
and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
6
Prayer of the Day
Everliving God,
before the earth was formed,
and even after it shall cease to be, you are God.
Break into our short span of life
and show us those things that are eternal,
that we may serve your purpose in all we do;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in unity with the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: Judges 4:1-10
4:1 The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, after Ehud
died. 2 So the Lord sold them into the hand of King Jabin of Canaan, who
reigned in Hazor; the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in
Harosheth-ha-goiim. 3 Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help; for he
had nine hundred chariots of iron, and had oppressed the Israelites cruelly
twenty years.
4 At that time Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel.
5 She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the
hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites came up to her for judgment. 6 She
sent and summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali, and said
to him, "The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you, 'Go, take position at
Mount Tabor, bringing ten thousand from the tribe of Naphtali and the tribe of
Zebulun. 7 I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin's army, to meet you by
the Wadi Kishon with his chariots and his troops; and I will give him into your
hand.' " 8 Barak said to her, "If you will go with me, I will go; but if you will not
go with me, I will not go." 9 And she said, "I will surely go with you;
nevertheless, the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory, for
the Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman." Then Deborah got up and
went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to
Kedesh; and ten thousand warriors went up behind him; and Deborah went up
with him.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 123
1 To you I lift up my eyes:
you who are enthroned in the heavens.
2 As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master:
or as the eyes of a maid toward the hand of her mistress,
3 So our eyes look to the Lord our God:
until he show us his mercy.
4 Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us:
for we have had our fill of derision.
5 Our souls overflow with the mockery of those at ease:
and with the contempt of the proud.
Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
5:1 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you
do not need to have anything written to you. 2 For you yourselves know
very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3
When they say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction
will come upon them, as labour pains come upon a pregnant woman, and
there will be no escape! 4 But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that
day to surprise you like a thief; 5 for you are all children of light and
children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 6 So then let us
not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; 7 for
those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at
night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the
breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For
God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our
Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or
asleep we may live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and
build up each other, as indeed you are doing.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 193
1. God, you are clothed with light,
as with a garment fair,
and in your holy sight
the saints your beauty wear;
the heavens and all therein express
the glory of your holiness.
2. Give me a robe of light
that I may walk with you:
bright as the stars are bright,
pure as their light is pure;
whose texture sin shall never stain,
but ever undefiled remain.
3. But can a sinner dare,
in rags, and sore ashamed,
lift up to God the prayer
which now my lips have framed,
while glowing seraphs fold their
wings,
and pour their sinless offerings?
4. O Christ, I lift my eyes;
your love for me I own;
in your great sacrifice
remains my hope alone;
the robe is mine, my soul to dress,
of everlasting righteousness.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet
our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 25
beginning at the 14th
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
14 "For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and
entrusted his property to them; 15 to one he gave five talents, to another
two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16
The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with
them, and made five more talents. 17 In the same way, the one who had
the two talents made two more talents. 18 But the one who had received
the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's
money. 19 After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled
accounts with them. 20 Then the one who had received the five talents
came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, 'Master, you handed over
to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.' 21 His master said to
him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in
a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of
your master.' 22 And the one with the two talents also came forward,
saying, 'Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two
more talents.' 23 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy
slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of
many things; enter into the joy of your master.' 24 Then the one who had
received the one talent also came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew that you
were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you
did not scatter seed; 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the
ground. Here you have what is yours.' 26 But his master replied, 'You wicked
and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and
gather where I did not scatter? 27 Then you ought to have invested my
money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was
my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to the one
with the ten talents. 29 For to all those who have, more will be given, and
they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what
10
they have will be taken away. 30 As for this worthless slave, throw him into
the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

THE NICENE CREED
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
12

1. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
the King of creation;
O my soul, praise him, for he is your
health and salvation.
Come all who hear,
brothers and sisters draw near,
praise him in glad adoration.

and, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting,
sustaining:
have you not seen
all that is needed has been
sent by his gracious ordaining?
3. Praise to the Lord, who will prosper
our work and defend us;
surely his goodness and mercy shall
daily attend us:
ponder anew
what the Almighty can do
as with his love he befriends us.
4. Praise to the Lord, who when
darkness of sin is abounding,
who, when the godless do
triumph, our best hopes
confounding,
sheds forth his light,
scatters the horrors of night,
saints with his mercy surrounding.
5. Praise to the Lord! O let all that
is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come
now with praises before him.
Let the Amen
sound from his people again:

Final Hymn: TiS 158
1. God has spoken by his prophets,
spoken his unchanging word,
each, from age to age proclaiming
God, the one, the righteous Lord.
In the world’s despair and turmoil
one firm anchor holds us fast:
God is king, his throne eternal,
God the first, and God the last.
2. God has spoken by Christ Jesus,
Christ, the everlasting Son,
brightness of the Father’s glory,
with the Father ever one;
spoken by the Word incarnate,
God from God, ere time began,
Light from Light, to earth
descending,
God, revealed as Son of Man.
3. God is speaking by his Spirit,
speaking to our hearts again,
in the age-long word expounding
God’s own message, now as then,
through the rise and fall of nations
one sure faith yet standing fast;
God still speaks, his word
unchanging,
God the first, and God the last.
