Hymn: TiS 698 – ODE TO JOY

1. When the light of first creation

pierced the lonely darkness through,

earth became life’s habitation,

tree and seed and creature grew.

Man and woman were created

as the crown of all the earth;

God’s own image deep within them

brought the gift of love to birth.

2. Joyful day of celebration

now, as when the world began,

day when God, with love and blessing,

joins a woman and a man.

Happy day of new beginnings,

promises enfold the two;

each to give, in joy and sorrow,

faithful love, the journey through.

3. Praise the Father, Love eternal,

ever ready to forgive;

praise the Son and Holy Spirit,

giving faith and hope to live:

gifts of love to guard their union,

guide their venture all life long.

Lord, inspire them with your vision;

fill their living with your song.

Greeting: The Lord be with you.

AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Prayer of Preparation:

As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel.

Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we

may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord

your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your

mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first

commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as

yourself.’

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's

forgiveness.

God of mercy and grace,

we have sometimes thought wrong things,

and done wrong things and

we have not always loved each other as we should.

We are sorry.

Forgive us and help us to love and obey you,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution {Celebrant}

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in

faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in

all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Gloria – Ushaw Setting (Alan Rees)

CHOIR: Glory, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest,

ALL:

and peace to God’s people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High

Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.

Prayer of the Day

Cleanse our consciences, O Lord, and enlighten our hearts through the daily

presence of your Son Jesus Christ, that when he comes in glory to be our judge

we may be found undefiled and acceptable in his sight; who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: James 1:19-22 (CEV)

My dear friends, you should be quick to listen and slow to speak or to get

angry. If you are angry, you cannot do any of the good things that God wants

done. You must stop doing anything wrong or evil. Instead be humble and

accept the message that is planted in you to save you. Obey God’s message!

Don’t fool yourselves by just listening to it.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm 45.1-2, 6-9 1 My heart is astir with fine phrases, I make my song for a king:

my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. 2 You are the fairest of men, grace flows from your lips:

therefore has God blessed you for ever and ever. 6 Your throne is the throne of God, it endures for ever:

and the sceptre of your kingdom is a righteous sceptre. 7 You have loved righteousness and hated evil:

therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above

your fellows. 8 All your garments are fragrant with myrrh, aloes and cassia:

music from ivory palaces makes you glad. 9 Kings' daughters are among your noble women:

the queen is at your right hand in gold of Ophir.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR

LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD.

The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 7

beginning at the 5th

verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Pharisees and teachers asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples obey what

our ancestors taught us to do? Why do they eat without washing their

hands?” Jesus replied: You are nothing but show-offs! The prophet Isaiah was

right when he wrote that God had said, “All of you praise me with your words,

but you never really think about me. It is useless for you to worship me, when you teach rules made up by

humans.” You disobey God’s commands in order to obey what humans have

taught. Jesus called the crowd together again and said, “Pay attention and try

to understand what I mean. The food that you put into your mouth doesn’t

make you unclean and unfit to worship God. The bad words that come out of

your mouth are what make you unclean.”

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

TALK

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in God the Father

who made us and loves us.

We believe in Jesus Christ,

the Son of God,

who saves us and loves us.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

who loves us and gives us life.

Offertory Hymn: TiS 242 – LORD OF THE DANCE

1. I danced in the morning when the world was begun,

and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun;

and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth,

at Bethlehem I had my birth:

Dance then, wherever you may be;

I am the Lord of the dance, said he;

and I’ll lead you all where ever you may be,

and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he.

2. I danced for the scribe and the pharisee,

but they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me.

I danced for the fishermen, for James and John,

they came with me and the dance went on:

3. I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame:

the holy people said it was a shame.

They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high,

and they left me there on a cross to die:

4. I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black;

it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back.

They buried my body and they thought I’d gone;

but I am the dance and I still go on:

5. They cut me down and I leap up high,

I am the life that’ll never, never die;

I’ll live in you as you live in me:

I am the Lord of the dance, said he:
