Hymn: TiS 349

1. In the cross of Christ I glory,

towering o’er the wrecks of time;

all the light of sacred story

gathers round its head sublime.

2. Through the cross, Christ’s love

empowers us

worldliness and self deny;

by his Spirit it inspires us

him, through love, to glorify.

3. When the woes of life o’ertake us,

hopes deceive and fears annoy,

never shall the cross forsake us,

from it shines our peace and joy.

4. Bane and blessing, pain and

pleasure,

by the cross are sanctified;

peace is there that knows no

measure,

joys that through all time abide.

5. In the cross of Christ I glory,

towering o’er the wrecks of time;

all the light of sacred story

gathers round its head sublime.

John Bowring 1792–1872 alt.

v.2 Charles Louis Fouvy 1928–

Greeting: The Lord be with you.

AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: Our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are

expecting a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3.20

4

Prayer of Preparation:

As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration

of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The minister reads aloud the commandments.

Hear the commandments which God gave his people Israel.

1 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of slavery; you shall

have no other gods but me.

2 You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that

is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under

the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.

3 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

4 Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shall you labour and do all

you have to do, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord your God.

5 Honour your father and your mother.

6 You shall do no murder.

7 You shall not commit adultery.

8 You shall not steal.

9 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.

10 You shall not covet anything that is your neighbour’s.

Response:

Lord, have mercy on us:

and write your law in our hearts by your Holy Spirit.

5

Kyrie eleison (Dudman)

The Confession

Christ the grace of God has dawned upon the world with healing for all.

Let us bring our weaknesses and infirmities to him, confessing our sins in

penitence and faith.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

and in what we have failed to do:

we have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;

we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you

in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

6

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to

him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,

strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

God of our ancestors,

whose chosen servant Abraham

was given faith to obey your call

and go out into the unknown:

endow your Church with such faith

that we may follow you with courage;

for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: Genesis 15.1-12, 17-18

After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, ‘Do not be

afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.’ 2But Abram

said, ‘O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir

of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’3And Abram said, ‘You have given me no

offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.’ 4But the word of

the LORD came to him, ‘This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very

own issue shall be your heir.’ 5He brought him outside and said, ‘Look towards

heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ Then he said to

him, ‘So shall your descendants be.’ 6And he believed the LORD; and the

LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness. 7Then he said to him, ‘I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the

Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.’ 8But he said, ‘O Lord GOD, how

am I to know that I shall possess it?’ 9He said to him, ‘Bring me a heifer three

years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtle-dove,

and a young pigeon.’ 10

He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying

each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. 11

And

when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. 12

As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and

terrifying darkness descended upon him. 17

When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire-pot and a

flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18

On that day the LORD made a

covenant with Abram, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land, from the

river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

8

Psalm: 27:9-17 9 O Lord, hear my voice when I cry:

have mercy upon me and answer me. 10

My heart has said of you, ‘Seek his face’:

your face, Lord, I will seek. 11

Do not hide your face from me:

or thrust your servant aside in displeasure; 12

For you have been my helper:

do not cast me away or forsake me, O God of my salvation. 13

Though my father and my mother forsake me:

the Lord will take me up. 14

Teach me your way, O Lord:

and lead me in an even path, for they lie in wait for me. 15

Do not give me over to the will of my enemies:

for false witnesses have risen against me, and those who breathe out

violence. 16

But I believe that I shall surely see the goodness of the Lord:

in the land of the living. 17

O wait for the Lord; stand firm and he will strengthen your heart:

and wait, I say, for the Lord.

Second Reading: Philippians 3.17-4.1

Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live

according to the example you have in us. 18

For many live as enemies of the

cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with

tears. 19

Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in

their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. 20

But our citizenship is in

heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Saviour, the Lord Jesus

Christ. 21

He will transform the body of our humiliation so that it may be

conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to

make all things subject to himself. 41Therefore, my brothers and

sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in

this way, my beloved.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 211(ii)

1. Jesus, lover of my soul,

let me to thy refuge fly,

while the nearer waters roll,

while the tempest still is high;

hide me, O my Saviour, hide,

till the storm of life is past;

safe into the haven guide,

O receive my soul at last.

2. Other refuge have I none,

hangs my helpless soul on thee;

leave, ah! leave me not alone,

still support and comfort me:

all my trust on thee is stayed,

all my help from thee I bring;

cover my defenceless head

with the shadow of thy wing.

3. Thou, O Christ, art all I want,

more than all in thee I find,

raise the fallen, cheer the faint,

heal the sick, and lead the blind.

Just and holy is thy name,

I am all unrighteousness;

false and full of sin I am,

thou art full of truth and grace.

4. Plenteous grace with thee is found,

grace to cover all my sin;

let the healing streams abound,

make and keep me pure within:

thou of life the fountain art,

freely let me take of thee,

spring thou up within my heart,

rise to all eternity.

Charles Wesley

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we

greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 13

beginning at the 1

st verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans

whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.2He asked them, ‘Do you

think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse

sinners than all other Galileans? 3No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will

all perish as they did. 4Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of

Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the

others living in Jerusalem? 5No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all

perish just as they did.’ 6Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and

he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7So he said to the gardener,

“See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and

still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?” 8He replied,

“Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig round it and put manure on it. 9If

it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.” ’

Gospel response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST

• SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church)

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God,

the Father, the almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

12
