HOLY TRINITY KEW Anglican Church of Australia
2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 9, 2012
Holy Communion 8am
Welcome to HOLY TRINITY,, where services have been held, in this church,
since 1863. We pray that you will feel the presence of God and know his
blessings in your life
YOU ARE INVITED TO BREAKFAST IN THE JUBILEE HALL AFTER TODAY’S SERVICE.
2
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will
break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the
shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.78–79
Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as
yourself.’
Kyrie eleison:
Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy: R/: Christ have mercy
Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy
3
Prayer of the Day
God of our salvation,
you straighten the winding ways of our hearts
and smooth the paths made rough by sin:
keep our hearts watchful in holiness,
and bring to perfection the good you have begun in us.
We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose Day draws near,
your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: MALACHI 3.1-7 1See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord
whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the
covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of
hosts. 2But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he
appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; 3he will sit as a
refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and
refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in
righteousness. 4Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to
the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. 5Then I will draw near to
you for judgement; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against
the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the
hired workers in their wages, the widow, and the orphan, against those who
thrust aside the alien, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts. 6For I the
Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, have not
perished. 7Ever since the days of your ancestors you have turned aside from
my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,
says the Lord of hosts.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
4
Psalm: Song of Zechariah
Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel:
you have come to your people and set them free.
You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour:
born of the house of your servant David.
Through your holy prophets, you promised of old:
to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us,
To show mercy to our forebears:
and to remember your holy covenant.
This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
Free to worship you without fear:
holy and righteous before you, all the days of our life.
And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High:
for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way,
To give God’s people knowledge of salvation:
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God:
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death:
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
5
Second Reading: PHILIPPIANS 1.1-11 1Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,To all the saints in Christ Jesus
who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:2Grace to you and
peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3I thank my God
every time I remember you, 4constantly praying with joy in every one of
my prayers for all of you, 5because of your sharing in the gospel from the
first day until now. 6I am confident of this, that the one who began a good
work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. 7It
is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in
your heart, for all of you share in God’s grace with me, both in my
imprisonment and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel. 8For
God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ
Jesus. 9And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more
with knowledge and full insight10
to help you to determine what is best, so
that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, 11
having
produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ
for the glory and praise of God.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
6
We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we
greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 3
beginning at the 1st
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
1In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius
Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his
brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias
ruler of Abilene, 2during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the
word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3He went
into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of
repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4as it is written in the book of the
words of the prophet Isaiah, ‘The voice of one crying out in the
wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5Every
valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and
the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made
smooth; 6and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” ’
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
SERMON followed by a short time for reflection

The Nicene Creed
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
8

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
9
Jesus said: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even
as I have loved you. John 13.34
[Let us pray]
We do not presume to come to your table,
merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness,
but in your manifold and great mercies.
We are not worthy
so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table.
But you are the same Lord
whose nature is always to have mercy.
Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord,
so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ,
and to drink his blood,
that we may evermore dwell in him,
and he in us. Amen.
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us.
Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
10

People: Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

are yours for ever and ever. Amen.
Our Father in heaven,

on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
