R46P – Loewenburg Decalcomania 25c Insurance stamp in blue on onion-
skin paper using the Henry Loewenburg decalcomania process. Very few of
these exist (probably less then 10) and most came from a Morton dean Joyce
sale back in the 1990’s. Very rare! (EP90-01) $500.00
Lincoln coverCover addressed to Hon. A. Lin-
coln Pres U S Unsealed envelope which was probably hand delivered
to Lincoln at the White House. The fact that it contained a letter is apparent from the edges of the
envelope. The Speed & Smith corner card would indicate that it
was from John Speed (1812-1887), a friend of Lincoln’s going back to the 1850’s. Lincoln appointed
Speed attorney general in 1864 and he served into the Johnson
administration in 1866. (PH90-01) $500.00
63 – Horace I. Gray coverHorace I. Gray Cumberland Maine circular Preprinted envelope with Cumberland, Me CDS. Mailing date “Aug 26” added with pen, stamp cancelled with manuscript “1862”. Gray, a job printer, was prolific when it came to this form of early precanceled direct mail. There are several different types that were produced by him from the 1850s through early 1860s. This one has been off the market since the early 1980s. Ex-Syracuse (PH90-02) $3,500.00
