IntroductionIntroduction Those peripheral devices which
supply information i.e. data & program from the outside world to the computer are the Input Devices
Those peripheral devices which give information from the computer to the user or store them in secondary storage devices are the Output Devices
Punched Punched CardCardAdvantages: They are cheaper
Unlike magnetic tape and magnetic disk they are human readable.
If an error occurs data can be changed simply by replacing the wrong card with a correct card unlike magnetic tape.
Disadvantages: Cards cannot be
erased and reused.
A card deck needs careful handling and storage.
Low data density They are bulky Folded, stapled or
mutilated cards are not accepted by a card reader.
KeyboardKeyboard Keyboard are on line devices that are used
for entering data directly into the computer. Keyboard is similar to typewriter keyboard. The keys on the keyboard include
Type writer keys – alphabets, numbers, shift, ctrl, alt, special symbols, comma etc.
Function Keys – F1 to F12 Cursor Control Keys – Four arrow keys Control Key Pad – pg up, pg down, home,
end etc. Numeric cum cursor pad
MouseMouse Mouse is a pointing device. It is used to control and manipulate
cursor movement on the screen. The mouse usually has three buttons
on it and a roller ball which signals the movement.
It is specially used for graphic applications and for cursor movement.
Buttons on the top of the mouse has predefined functions..
LIGHT PENLIGHT PEN A Light Pen is a pointing device shaped
like a pen and is connected to a VDU. The tip of the light pen contains a light-
sensitive element (photocell) which, when placed against the screen, detects the light from the screen enabling the computer to identify the location of the pen on the screen.
Light pens have the advantage of 'drawing' directly onto the screen (CAD)
SCANNERSCANNER Scanners allow information such as
a photo or text to be input into a computer memory directly.
A scanner scans an image and transforms the image to the code used by a computer.
Scanner are of two types-1. Flatbed scanner2. Roller fed scanner
TOUCH TOUCH SCREENSCREEN A Touch Sensitive Screen is a pointing device that enables the
user to interact with the computer by touching the screen.
By touching the screen the user can make a selection or move a cursor.
Touch screens are used in airline and railway reservation counter, ATM etc.
BARCODE BARCODE READERREADER Barcode Reader reads special lines or bar
codes. Data is represented in bar code by the width of
the bars and the distance between them. The most common bar code is the Universal Product Code found in most of the grocery items.
The bars are read by a hand held wand reader or by a fixed scanner. The computer system identifies the product, its brand name and other information.
The latest software available for bar code is Bar Code Pro.
VOICE INPUT & VOICE INPUT & RECOGNITION RECOGNITION SYSTEMSYSTEM
This is an input device, consisting of a microphone that converts human speech into electrical signals.
These signal pattern is transmitted to the computer where it is attached against pre stored pattern known as vocabulary to identify the input.
The system is initially operated in training mode to train the system to recognize the voice pattern and then it operates.
It reduces the cost of data entry.

PRINTERSPRINTERSImpact Printers Non Impact
PrintersCommonly used because their functioning is relatively easy multiple copies can be produced at the same time with the help of carbon paper.
Dot Matrix Printers, Line printers, daisy wheel printers
They uses thermal, chemical, electrostatic and inkjet technologies for printing.Laser printers, DeskJet printers
