Instructions for the Tote Construction
BERNINA 830 Tote Bag Page 16 of 17
Tote Construction (cont’d) Adding Top Bands Right sides together, sew the narrow silver grey linen or denim strip to one of the tote bag panels, using a
⅝” (1.5cm) seam allowance, being sure to catch the strap in the seam. Press strip towards the upper edge of tote. With red embroidery thread, edgestitch the pressed seam in place using Stitch #6, Triple Straight stitch. Repeat this process for the other tote bag panel.
Bottom Seam Right sides together, join the tote front and back panels at the lower end, creating the bottom of the tote,
using a ⅝” (1.5cm) seam allowance. Press seam open.
Adding Side Panels (quilted using the BERNINA® Stitch Regulator) Right sides together, fold the lower short end of each of the quilted side panels in half, marking the center
with a pin. Right sides together, match the center pin mark on the quilted panel to the bottom seam line. Pin and stitch together using a ⅝” (1.5cm) seam allowance. Stop stitching ⅝” away from the corner of the
long edge of the quilted panel. Be sure to secure the stitching and remove the tote from the machine. Cut a clip into the tote bag just short of the ⅝” seam allowance at the point. (Note: you will be making a clip
on each side of the tote bottom, but will only be sewing one side in at a time.) The clip will enable you to turn the corner on the quilted panel and continue sewing it to the embroidered front and back sides of the tote, creating a boxed side panel.
Repeat for the remaining long seam of the quilted panel. Duplicate the same sewing procedure for the other quilted panel on the other side of the tote. Tote Lining Cut a piece of silver grey linen or denim 43” x 25½” (109 x 65cm). Right sides together, sew the side seams, using a ⅝”(1.5cm) seam allowance.
Be sure to leave an opening for turning, press. Sew corners as shown. Place a piece of sturdy card board in the bottom of the
tote for extra stability. Right sides together, place the tote lining on the
outside of the tote. Sew the lining to the tote at the upper edge using a ⅝”(1.5cm) seam allowance. Carefully pull the tote through the opening in the lining; turn so that the lining will be inside the tote. Note: Before completing the next step, consider the following - - - Topstitching through all of multiple layers may require the use of a Jeans needle in either size 90/14 or 100/16. With red embroidery thread, using the Triple Straight stitch, topstitch the upper edge of the tote ½” (1cm)
away from the seamed edge. Add topstitching to the side seams as well, again using the Triple Straight stitch, red thread and a measure-
ment of ½” (1cm). Start sewing at the top of the tote and stop approximately 2” (5cm) from the bottom of the tote.
Finished width is approximately 4” (10cm)
BERNINA 830 Tote Bag Page 17 of 17
Optional:
Using the EZ Glitzer, apply Swarovski “Jet” crystals to the decorated red and black ribbons as well as within the embroidered panels as desired. Some glitzing placement suggestions might be - - - “The 8 Series” side panel - small curls on the stitched 8’s on the black ribbon that framed the Multi-
directional sewing work. “Endless Embroidery” side panel - small curls on the stitched 8’s
on rows 1 and 5 for a minimum. If desired, add more.
