Ch. 3 Sec. 1 The Body’s Transportation

System

Jobs of Cardiovascular System

1. carries needed substances cells

2. carries waste products away from cells

3. contains cells that fight disease

How long does it take blood to circulate throughout your body?

It takes blood about one minute to circulate throughout your body.

Cardiovascular System

Did you know that your heart beats over 100,000times a day?

Heart’s Structure

• Atrium– 2 upper chambers– Receives blood

• Ventricle– 2 lower chambers– Pumps blood out

Left VentricleLeft Ventricle==•Strongest chamber Strongest chamber •Pumps blood thruPumps blood thru bodybody

5. Right Atrium

Do right and left seem backward? That's because you're looking at an illustration of somebody else's heart. To think about how your own heart works, imagine wearing this illustration on your chest.

How the Heart Works• The Heart House To simplify how blood flows

through a normal, healthy heart, think of the heart as a house with:

• 4 Rooms (Chambers)• 4 Doors (Valves)

• 4 Big Hallways (Vessels)• 4 Small Hallways (Vessels)

1. Oxygen-poor blood (shown in blue) flows from the body into the right atrium.

2. Blood flows through the right atrium into the right ventricle.

3. The right ventricle pumps the blood to the lungs, where the blood releases waste gases and picks up oxygen.

4. The newly oxygen-rich blood (shown in red) returns to the heart and enters the left atrium.

5. Blood flows through the left atrium into the left ventricle.

6. The left ventricle pumps the oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body.

pacemaker

•group of cells that adjusts heart rate

An Artificial PacemakerThis pacemaker has been implanted beneath a patient’s skin and connected with wires to the heart. The pacemaker will regulate the heart beat.

valve• flap of tissue that prevents

blood from flowing backward

blood vessels

aarteries ccapillaries veins

carry bloodaaway from heart

cconnect arteries to veins

carry blood to heart

aorta= largest artery

Locate the pericardium (bag around the heart).

pericardium

Locate the coronary artery.

coronary artery

Find the aorta. What does it measure across in centimeters?

Measure the thickness of the aorta wall in centimeters.

The septum is the wall of muscle that separates the two ventricles. Measure

the thickness of the septum.

Locate the two valves with "strings" attached.

Locate the pulmonary artery.

What do you see inside the artery?

Draw a heart, label its

chambers and major features, and write brief

captions describing the

function of each chamber.
