REMINDERS! - Dress Down tomorrow for our first
Exploring E Day! Make sure you dress in weather
appropriate clothing as we will be spending a good part of the day outside!
- Book orders are due tomorrow, if you are sending them in with your child, but if
you prefer, you can order online. I included our class code on the Shutterfly account but if you missed it the code is
K7N9B. You are welcome to submit online orders at any time!
- On Tuesday, September 15th the entire first grade, along with children all over the world, will be celebrating Dot Day. The day and activities for the day are
based on the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. On this day students are
permitted to dress down (top only) in a dotted shirt or wear dots on their bows/headbands. If students would prefer they
can dress in dress code that day!
Writing * * The morning work I have been completing:
Magazine Monday- reading magazines from the Library (Sports Illustrated Kids, Highlights, National
Geographic Kids and Little Kids, Boy’s Life, Zootles, etc) * -Tune Up Tuesday- working on a math activity to
add to our notebook * -Write It Wednesday- some kind of writing
activity * -Think Outside The Box Thursday- turning a
shape/object into another (Check mine out from last week!)
* - Fidget With It Friday- fidgeting with something to create (last week we used play-doh)
* * The 10 Black Dots book I am creating- we have created pages 1 thru 6
Math * My Math Notebook (the black speckled one)- have me
show you it BUT make sure I BRING IT BACK TO SCHOOL (Check out the flip side and see the start of
my Reader’s Notebook!)
* Tally Marks- what are they, how do you write them and what do you do when you get to five tallies?
* Math tiling!- What is it and how do you do it? We practiced counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Extra practice
at home would be beneficial.
* Playing POP! at morning meeting- (We were practicing skip counting in this game. Ask your child how to play and when you would say the word POP!)
Reading and Phonics * Practicing the rest of the short vowels
(i, o and u)
* Using letter tiles to build short vowel words
* Word families- ask me to tell you the name of the word family in some words…. snap,
hop, scrub, jet, flip
* Blends- example: sl, st, cr, sw, cl- and where these blends can be found in words (at the beginning- slip, stop, crab, swim,
club)
* Why some words end in “ck”… because “If you have a wimpy vowel you need a “ck.”
Not just a “k,” you need a “ck.” (What is a wimpy vowel?)
