Session Overview

Introduction to Open Educational Resources

What are they?

What are the motivations to use OER?

Who is engaging in OER? Examples of OER projects in community colleges

Creating OER Playlists

College Open Textbooks Getting involved in the Open Education

movement

Many Flavors of Open

• Open Educational Resources aka OER• OpenCourseWare aka OCW• Open Textbooks • Open Acces Journals• Open Source (Code)

OER Defined

Digitized materials offered freely and openly for educators, students and self-learners to use and re-use for teaching, learning and research

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, 2007

Why Practice Openness?

Institutional Mission

“The mission of MIT is to advance knowledge and …. The Institute is committed to generating, disseminating, and preserving knowledge ….”

The Community College Mission

Why Practice Openness?

• Reduce student costs• Collaborate across disciplines• Improve learning• Leverage taxpayer investments

in education• Scale education

Who is engaged in OER?

Who is funding OER?

Community CollegeOER Project

OER Playlists at College of the Canyons

• We gratefully acknowledge the support of a U.S. Department of Education FIPSE (Fund for Improvement of Post Secondary Education) Special Focus grant

Why?

Consider this example:– Student spends $200 on a textbook for a course

and $30 on a textbook supplement• SUBTOTAL = $230

– Course• 3 units• Current cost per unit = $36• Cost of course itself = $108

– In this scenario, the textbook and supplement represent more than half of the overall cost of the course!

Our Projects’ Goals

• Accepting that the textbook provides structure and content

1. Focus on creation of supplemental materials and rental of existing texts

2. Develop playlists of academic content to either supplement or replace textbooks

3. Prepare some potential models of content delivery to be prepared for the post-textbook era

What is a playlist?

Introductory text, learning outcomes, unit objectives, etc.

Transition text

Why consider playlists?

• Open content is already out there• Could playlist development be an easier process

to sustain than textbook development?– A fusion of both playlist and open textbook

approaches?• Fundamentals of the technique are familiar

– Faculty are accustomed to assembling existing content already (think learning units in a course management system)

– We aim to make it a more formal process
