The Great Vehicle Treatise on the Sublime Continuum (Mahayanottara-tantrasastra) explained that

EXTENSIVE, MEDIUM AND BRIEF PERFECTION OF WISDOM SUTRAS

(ii) the extensive, medium, and brief [Perfection of Wisdom] Sutras

UNIQUE MIDDLE WAY-CONSEQUENTIALIST (PRASANGIKA) ASSERTION: FUNDAMENTAL VEHICLE

METHOD PRACTITIONERS MUST REALIZE EMPTINESS TO ATTAIN NIRVANA

Only three Perfection of Wisdom Sutras are the principal sutra sources of the Ornament for Clear Realization. Those three are the:

1. Extensive Sutra – (Perfection of Wisdom in) One Hundred Thousand (Verses)

2. Middling Sutra - (Perfection of Wisdom in) Twenty Thousand (Verses)

3. Brief Sutra - (Perfection of Wisdom in) Eight Thousand (Verses).

and the Matrix of the One-Gone-Thus4 Sutra (Aryatathagatagarbhanamamaha-yansutra)

clearly teach there is no difference in the object of observation of the path that must definitely be realized—the emptiness of true existence of all phenomena, the ultimate truth free from all elaborations—even for those who attain the enlightenment of hearers and the enlightenment of the solitary realizers.

Arya Asanga’s Commentary on Maitreya’s Uttaratantra shows:

ARYA ASANGA, HIMSELF, WAS A MIDDLE WAY-CONSEQUENTIALIST (PRASANGIKA) TENET-HOLDER

Acharya Asanga clarified its intention exactly as it is in its commentary,

i.e., from a Prasangika perspective

whereby you should not think of him as divided from the Protector Nagarjuna,

the opener of the chariot tracks {Nagarjuna, himself} who relied upon the first mode for differentiating between the interpretable and the definitive, because he is a follower of [Nagarjuna] himself. In this treatise Ornament for Clear Realization (Abhisamayalamkara), the final view of emptiness is taught again and again. However, the main object to be determined is the stages of clear realization of the three lineage-bearers; it clearly reveals the way to practice by means of the three: definite entity, definite number and definite sequence—the hidden meaning of the three, the extensive, medium, and brief [Perfection of Wisdom] Sutras abiding within.
