DESCRIPTION

Presentation 24 May 2011 to the SUNY Delihi MoodleMoot 2011We haven't tied the whole world to Moodle (except through the Map activity that we've added to bring in Google Maps functionality), but the ability of Moodle to be a central platform that we can integrate other functions into is an important part of our development efforts. This talk will present our experiences and lessons learned in integrating a variety of applications into our Moodle system, including: library support for classes; senior project submissions; streaming media services (Kaltura); e-portfolios (Mahara); and live classroom environments (Big Blue Button).

“Mahoodle”-Single sign-on-Mahara assignment in Moodle

Adoption process for Mahara

Why e-portfolios?-Tool to showcase student/faculty work?-Tool to support student learning?-Tool to collect institutional data?

Mahara overview“Collect, select, reflect” and share (access control)

Resume building Social networking

Campus lessons - Mahara

• Adoption slower than with Moodle– Less faculty interest– Stealth adoption– Planned work with Career Services

• Stronger tie to Moodle 2.0– Repositories

• Focus on tool for student learning– Constraints on student showcase uses– Constraints on harvesting institutional data

Video @ Purchase

Faculty use of video in Moodle

• YouTube resources very popular– Moodle multimedia filter– Embedding other video sites

• Web video not sufficient– Privacy, copyright needs

• Video uploads to Moodle– 150 MB limit per file– Course backups in the multi-GB range

Commercial/community hybrid-http://corp.kaltura.com/-http://www.kaltura.org/

Kaltura-Moodle integration

• Video resource– Media added to Kaltura through Moodle– Upload bypasses Moodle (file size issues)– Playback controls

• Video assignment type– Student submitted videos– Video sequencing tools: content bank, timeline,

transitions

Streaming video rights

• Librarian role in obtaining streaming rights• Direct access to Kaltura publisher dashboard• Upload & transcode video• Schedule availability• Provide embed code for Moodle courses

Campus lessons - Kaltura

• Good feature set• Developer/support community

VoiceThread http://voicethread.com/

VoiceThread – Moodle integrations
