Video Art Was Born in Mid. 60s

1. Video work is not a commercial product for sale or mass consumption

2. Video art is a form of self expression

3. Videos were created by professional artists:ex: Fluxus group, etc.

Fluxus films - Characteristics

• Were considered critiques of mainstream film

• Depicted very minimal action

• Were highly poetic, meditative and often playful

• Bridged the gap between art and life

- Were created in opposition to mainstream culture

- Were often characterized by:- the absence of linear narrative- the use of various abstracting techniques:

out-of-focus, scratching on film, rapid editing, the absence of sound

Performance art was born in New York in the 60s as theresult of cross fertilization between theater, dance, film,video and visual art.

- A New York-based visual artist

- Began his career in late 60s as a poet & writer

- Transformed himself into a performance and video artist by using his own body as a subject for photography, video, etc.

- An American artist who specializes in sculpture, video and performance art
