Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum
Agenda Item: 6.1
Meeting Date: February 7, 2018
Presenter: David P. Burns
Agenda Item: Standards for Pathway Approval
Action Requested:
Motion to Approve Discussion Information Education
Recommended Resolution:
THAT the Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum approve the following standards for use in the attribution of Pathway status, and recommend to Senate that they be added to the Course Outline Manual.
Senate Standing Committee Report:
For Senate Office Use Only
Context & Background:
SSC Curriculum has not yet passed formal and transparent standards for the adjudication of Pathway status proposals.
Key Messages: [maximum of 3, preferably no more than 100 words]
1. Courses should be at the 1100 level 2. Courses should only have prerequisites if they are meant to structure
progression through the Pathway system (such as a requirement of a Pathway 1 course prior to taking a second related course in Pathway 2)
3. Courses reflect the level of English proficiency students will have at Pathway 2/3 (i.e. less than students admitted for undergraduate study)
4. Courses selected should be scheduled regularly so as not to provide misleading expectations to students about the options available to them as Pathway students
5. Courses should have low failure rates (relative to other 1100 level courses).

MUSIC MEMORANDUM
TO:
Arts Standing Committee on Curriculum
From: Don Hlus – Chair, Music Department
DATE:
December 19, 2017
Re: MUSIC – Pathway Courses
The Music Department would like to add a few music courses to the list of
courses available to Pathway students. We hope these courses can be
added to the list of Pathway courses by September 1, 2018 so that they
are an option for Pathway students beginning the fall 2018 semester.
The list of courses proposed for the Pathway program was unanimously
approved by the music faculty on December 5, 2017.
Background
The music department had two courses, MUSI 1100 (Rudiments of Music I)
and MUSI 1103 (Listening to Music I), on the original list of courses available
to Pathway students. We made revisions to those courses that required a
new course number. Consequently, those discontinued courses were
removed from the Pathway list, but at the time no revisions to the list were
permitted.
Rationale
The courses that we are requesting to be considered for the Pathway 2 list
are non-writing courses (MUSI 1120 & MUSI 1130). The performance-based
courses (MUSI 1167, 1267, 1168, 1268, 1169 & 1269 etc.) are specifically for
-
music intended students but are open to non-music students with
permission of the instructor. Two of the courses that we wish be considered
for the Pathway 3 list are music history survey courses (MUSI 1111 & MUSI
1115) with basic writing assignments that a Pathway 3 student could easily
handle while the third (MUSI 1291) is a music writing course.
Proposal
Courses designated for Pathway Studies students at Pathway 2 English
proficiency.
• MUSI 1120 - Music Rudiments
• MUSI 1130 - Music Technology
• MUSI 1167 & 1267 - Kwantlen Strings
• MUSI 1168 & 1268 - Kwantlen Wind Ensemble
• MUSI 1169 & 1269 - Kwantlen Chorus
Courses designated for Pathway Studies students at Pathway 3 English
proficiency.
• MUSI 1111 - History of Popular Music
• MUSI 1115 - Classical Music in Western Culture
• MUSI 1291 – Songwriting & Arranging
If there are any questions or you require further information, please do not
hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Don Hlus

Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum
Agenda Item: 6.3
Meeting Date: February 7, 2018
Presenter: Brian Myette
Agenda Item: Program Change: Millwright/Industrial Mechanic Citation
Action Requested:
Motion to Approve Discussion Information Education
Recommended Resolution:
THAT the Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum recommend Senate approve the changes to the Millwright/Industrial Mechanic Citation, effective September, 2018.
Senate Standing Committee Report:
For Senate Office Use Only
Context & Background:
Course Outlines are being updated to current format, and are well beyond the “review by” date. Some logistical changes are also required due to the Pan-Canadian Harmonization Initiative. We are proposing the following program changes:
“Layout and Machine Foundations” re-introduced into the program
“Lubrication” re-introduced into the program
“Rigging” re-introduced into the program
Key Messages:
1. The ITA is nationally harmonizing most of the apprenticeship programs in BC which means that any foundation program having Level 1 outcomes must be revised to include these new outcomes.
2. This change to the curriculum meets the requirements in The Red Seal National Occupational Analysis (NOA) for 1st year Millwright.
Implications / Risks: There should be no impact to students. These changes meet the requirements in the Red Seal National Occupational Analysis (NOA) for first year Millwright, and satisfy KPU’s requirements for Citation certification.
Consultations: Please see Program Change Form
