• Effort led by Missouri Department of Health and Senior services
• Goal: raise awareness of risk and increase enrollment in NDPPs
• Missourians over 45, African American and Hispanic/Latino
audience.
• Campaign was statewide but concentrated in STL and KC
because higher minority audience and more in-person NDPPs
located there.

YMCA’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM
THE PROGRAM IS:•Led by a trained Lifestyle Coach
•A one-year program: 19 sessions in the first 6 months, then 6 sessions in the second six months
•Open to all community members; YMCA membership is not required
•A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-approved curriculum
PROGRAM QUALIFICATIONS:• At least 18 years old,
• Overweight (BMI ≥25), and
• Prediabetes confirmed via one of 3 blood tests or previous diagnosis of gestational diabetes
• If no blood test, a qualifying score on a risk assessment
PROGRAM GOALS:• Reduce body weight by 5-7%
• Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week
TRAINED LIFESTYLE COACHES

• Create a motivating environment that is friendly and non-competitive.
• Facilitate group-based problem solving by utilizing motivational interviewing methods.
• Make learning a shared responsibility for the group rather than serving as the “expert.”
• Support and encourage goal setting on each session.
• Transfer accountability to participant over course of yearlong program.

RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION STRATEGIES
• Start early – 3 months before first class then ongoing
• Over-recruit - Rule of thumb: 20-25 to end up with at least 5
• Informational session, or “Class 0” for participants – reduces dropouts
• Contact high risk patients or clients
• Present to local health care providers for referrals
• Ask recruited participants to recruit a buddy
• Commitment agreements
• Offer make-up sessions
