DiversityWho Me... Yes You, Not Me… Yes You

We encounter a diverse population everyday.

What do we know about them?

What can you tell about someone’s appearance?

Do we exclude?

Do we include?

Are our assumptions correct?

Everyone has a story to tell.

Are you listening?

What Is Diversity? Racial/Ethnic Religion Exceptionality Cultural Age Gender Sexual Orientation Family Structure Socioeconomic Status Learning Preferences Language

Who am I? What are my preferences? What is my culture? Who are my friends and family? Who are my colleagues? Who do I associate with?

How do other people view me? Do they see the true me or a stereotype?

Do I think Diversely? What am I comfortable with? Can I change myself? Am I quick to judge? Can I go beyond tolerance? Do I reach out to others who are different?

Do I make these assumptions?1. Americans don’t have a culture.2. If it is different, it is wrong or deficient.3. One should not talk about cultural

diversity.4. One should not admit to being biased

or prejudiced.Hogan-Garcia (2003)
